Thanks for the video - it certainly inspired me to go the the Whirinaki Forest Park. Sorry you had disappointing weather - it isn't always like that! I did this loop back in February in perfect conditions. I had planned to continue on to Upper Te Hoe, Mangakahika huts etc on the Te Pua-a-Tāne Circuit but the forecast wasn't great (but frustratingly the bad weather didn't happen at all). After overnighting at the lovely Central Whirinaki hut I planned a second night at Mangamate hut but arrived surprisingly early so just walked out to River Road. That section was mostly in the river - not a problem at all on a warm summer day but I imagine pretty tricky after heavy rain or in the winter. Despite good weather and in February I was surprised not to see another soul, and certainly had the hut to myself. This is one of my favourite North Island places and next time I will definitely do the longer Te Pua-a-Tāne Circuit.
I'm going to start the loop today, and was planning on doing it in reverse starting at Mangamate. After watching your video, I'm going to start at CW instead, so I finish the last day walking downstream. Thanks!
Not sure how I found this but New Zealand has huts that you just walk to and can camp overnight for free? There would be homeless everywhere in the USA.

loved the cheeky smile at 4:04
Some of the stories had me in tears laughing, I should've recorded those parts 😂
