Diamonds were extraordinarily rare when they were found only in India. That all changed with Cecil Rhodes in South Africa. That said, DeBeers no longer has a monopoly but prices remain relatively stable and high (market notwithstanding). I accept that I''m always going to pay a lot for a diamond. I'd just like someone to explain the supply chain to me.

In terms of scrap value, which matters a lot, diamonds have little to no value.
Marketing has a lot more to do with it than you lead on. The diamond marketing has been so effective it has infiltrated cultural norms like engagement rings. The demand was created by one of the most successful long lasting marketing campaigns of all time.

    • @YourAverageJeweler
      @YourAverageJeweler 3 года назад +1

"Scrap" value should be less relevant the nicer the diamond is. That was my intention on that point I was hoping came through in the video.
My point on marketing: pretty much everything outside of commodities is strongly influenced by marketing. It is not a necessity, but most people still want to participate in traditional engagement rings. If they do, they are objectively competing with everyone else who wants one. My point is, marketing or not, we all have a choice is we want to buy something. That's where the supply and demand kicks in.
I hope that helps clarify some of my statements and opinions. Thanks for the comment.

@@YourAverageJeweler what about de beers giant storage of diamonds to artificially hold the supply down? If its a myth... Love to hear about it. Love to see a video where you take this head on. Like your content by the way.

    • @YourAverageJeweler

@@stantonviaduc4168 It is a good specific topic of interest. There are a few ways to answers that. not a myth as much as it has been exaggerated. There are few industries that allow "flooding" the market. It can often be detrimental long term for everyone and the pendulum inevitable swings back. Imagine after the price "dropped" and they sold their reserves. Now there is nothing and the price sky rockets! Oil is currently a good example of supply control. They are slowing production because the climate changed, but are raising production incrementally. With diamonds, there is too much unpredictability with supply, so they keep reserves to account for a weak mining period. If they didn't have this you might see fluctuations almost like gold pricing? that part is more theory, but it is part of their reasoning. Also, De Beers is not nearly the monopoly they once were ( they are still big). A video might be good on this. thanks for your thoughts!

@@YourAverageJeweler I can't believe you're comparing the intrinsic value of oil to diamonds. Oil is a necessity in modern life and diamonds are never a necessity. You are also perpetuating the false notion of a "traditional diamond engagement ring" which De Beers brainwashed many people into believing. I really enjoyed your other videos, but your videos about the value of diamonds are making me distrust you. However, your videos on other gems are very informative.

I watched all of your videos in one day. Loved all of them and feel much more knowledgeable than I was before. Thank you.
However, I disagree with this particular video because you compared diamonds with amethyst, citrine and quartz.
How can you compare a Lion (Diamond) with a Donkey (Quartz). You should have compared the Lion with a Royal Tiger or a fast-Cheetah.
What I mean to say is that you should have compared Diamond with Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald. An unheated, untreated, 100% natural Ruby or Sapphire of Gem quality is much more rarer than a regular 1 carat, supply controlled white diamond.
I am not saying that diamonds are not valuable. They indeed are very valuable but not as much as they are marketed.
Whatever said and done. I love and admire your work a lot, just because you are so so good that I couldn't stop myself on this particular difference in opinion. Amen

There is a buying and selling price. Most jewellers don’t like to talk about it because they are embarrassed. But effectively that’s where they make their money, let’s look at this scenario. If you bought a diamond say for 20k you walk out the door with your purchase, then had an argument with your girlfriend, so you in a pique go back into the store and ask for your money back. You will only get approx 50% even though the ring is still in the box never been worn. That is the buying and the selling price, similar to cars, though cars would perhaps be better.
Bottom line as for being rare, no. He spoke about quartz, well diamonds are carbon, one of the most common elements on the planet.
Any way you look at it, they are still carbon, so is coal. The only difference is heat and pressure. Yes it is marketing, supply and demand, just depends on how you look it?

There’s a couple ways you could go about it. You could find a jeweler to do an appraisal for you. Some jewelers will tell you initially if they don’t think an appraisal is worth it saving you a little bit of money that way. I also have a video explaining some of the complexities of gemstone value. There’s two parts you could check that out and that will at least answer some of the things that you’re supposed to be looking for. But it takes a lot of experience to really nail down pricing of something that does have value. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for watching and commenting. I do address some of the diamond aspects in other videos. Diamond certainly does have some negatives, but in today's culture it seems easier to find people that want to bring it down with commonly misunderstood arguments. I guess I suppose it is an easy target and I feel I have to explain/defend the common complaints/arguments. The diamond industry has its faults, but it seems perpetually judged by many decades old accusations. Sorry it shows my bias. I value your feedback. I actually prefer colored stones in most cases!

Tbh I've seen CZ that looks better than real diamonds. I would rather get something that is a lot more clear with a better color, and that was cut with the same care for cheaper or a similar price but looks 10 times better. Plus diamonds aren't actually precious or rare. And it has gotten to the point where only under a literally microscope can differences be seen. CZ can even be more dense than diamond if you find a good supplier that makes quality CZ. To each their own I guess.

What they don’t tell you is that diamonds have terrible cleavage. Ask anyone who has shattered their precious solitaire on a granite bench top by hitting it on just the right axis. Chefs do not wear diamonds. For a start off they are carbon ( think coal )
It will burn, admittedly it needs a high heat.
Mohs scale of hardness is purely scratch ability, that doesn’t tell the whole story. There are gems out there that are lower on the Mohs Scratch ability rating than a diamond but because of their internal structure will take hard knocks that a diamond won’t.
Russian Lab diamonds will register diamond in a test. They have all the components of a diamond but not the price.
There is a lot out there that people don’t know, and are not aware of, you have to really do your research.

Value is determined by what someone is willing to pay. There are many gemstones FAR more rare than diamond. Diamond in gem world isn't particularly rare. Good diamonds? Good large diamonds? Are rare.
He's correct. 90% of diamonds are commercial grade/ tool. Like salt pepper diamonds they over charge you for. Tool grade.
Diamonds today? Are far more affordable than before industrial age. Diamonds are hard to cut. There were few treatments. So mftrs had to use really good rough to cut a good stone. Prices were high compared to wages. Most ppl couldn't even afford a diamond. Most ppl today can. In some capacity.
As long as very wealthy ppl will pay a lot of $ for diamonds, prices will remain high. So tell Cardi B, Labraun, to stop paying so much.🤣😂
