So I jokingly made a gesture of positioning myself to raise my right hand to break the board karate style - in front of my friend. He said, "Bottom one!"
That line just riffs off Bruce Lee's line "boards don't hit back" in Enter the Dragon (1973) - which also starred Bolo Yeung - when O'Hara smashes a short plank.

Ah yes 80s fighting movies. Involving massive juiced wrestlers on more steroids than humanly healthy, dialog that makes English literature teachers weep with agony, gallons of baby oil and any "hits" are out of frame and look like amateur dramatics class (so safe for kids!). But all worth it because rocking 80s soundtracks and awesome training montages.
That's an accurate description of 80s fighting movies from the USA, but not of 80s fighting movies from Hong Kong. Just watch "Martial Arts of Shaolin" (1986).
