Same for me my friend. I never had a Gameboy or something and only experienced pokemon and such by playing a bit on other peoples Gameboy, GBC and GBA. One day I got a Nintendo DS for having good grades in school and a few months later, a version of Pokemon Pearl, on christmas eve. I still have a polaroid picture of me holding up the box of the game and it really shaped my childhood.

I was familiar with Pokémon Gold but not to the extent of Daimond. I was just filled with utter joy and completed the ENTIRE national dex after playing through the whole game. The swarms, pal Park, and the mystery gift systems
I played Pokemon Staduim and Pokemon Snap as a kid that was my first 2 entries to the franchise but Pokemon Platinum was my first Mainline game and after that I was a pokemon fan for life.

You did a great job with this, Nat, and I especially loved your personal story interwoven in the latter half. I remember seeing Diamond for the first time on my cousin's DS. I had been a lifelong Pokemon fan up until that point--I was in 8th grade--but was unfamiliar with the mainline games. Acquiring my own copy following the encounter sent me on a path similar to yours--it really was a wonderful experience of a game I still remember fondly.
In 2008 I received my first Pokémon game Pearl and I played it a ton but because commercials of Platinum were coming out and my friend later getting Platinum I was just a little upset that Pearl wasn’t as good as Platinum (I was 9 in 2009). I later got Platinum and enjoyed it so much. One of my other friends gave me his copy of Sapphire and I gotta say that I didn’t really enjoy gen 3. Some of the Pokémon were terrible and I hated the look of the region. I got Soul Silver and Battle Revolution in 2010 built some OP team combining my Soul Silver and Platinum teams with Soul Silver post game Pokémon like Charizard. I was unstoppable when battling my friends while hiding from the teachers at recess, on the bus or in Battle Revolution. Played these games like crazy until I mistakenly sold them at a yard sale in 2013 to get started early on saving up for my first car when I turn 16 in a few years. I bought White and White 2 and they were good but never lived up to the gen 4 games. I later saw X & Y and realized Pokémon was dead for the gens 1-5 OG players as I didn’t like anything about the gen 6 games. Stopped playing Pokémon completely until Let’s Go Pikachu came out and even though it was different, I thoroughly enjoyed it but still stayed well away from the main series games as they still didn’t capture the magic of 1-5 games. Even ORAS I didn’t even like. Later BDSP was released and I got Shining Pearl and I fell head over heels in love with this game. Yes I wish a lot more Platinum things were included like the Battle Frontier and I also wish a lot more Pokémon were available to capture before the post game. (I did try Legends and it was boring after the first few minutes, worst Pokémon game ever) As of right now I’m replaying SP for what seems like my 1 millionth time and I am yet to get bored of it. Now I’m waiting to see if we get the Let’s Go Johto game we were told we would get if Let’s Go Pikachu and Evee sold well, which they did and I’m also waiting for a gen 5 remake which is rumoured to be done like BDSP, but due to the hate BDSP got I’m sure ILCA won’t be involved.
Super unique D&P story: Back in 2007, the year D&P we're released.. I got my regular driver's license. Then in 2021, the year brilliant diamond shining pearl dropped, I got my class B CDL. Funny how things come full circle

A couple of errors here when discussing the physical special split, as well as using gen 5 footage for the game, right before talking about sprite animations
I think for my age we starting playing again in college lol. I was graduating when Gen. 4 came out . Most of my friends hid that they played in middle school with gen 3 . But a ton of my friends played in 2007 after we graduated . I felt so lame at times in high school thinking I was the only one playing . The crazy thing is I was like 10 when Pokémon was big . The rush was wild . I think when Gen3 came out it wasn’t cool anymore to play . It got revived within my friends group for Gen. 4

It was my first game too but because I don’t have my copy of Pearl anymore I got Shining Pearl and started reliving my childhood memories again

Pokemon Diamond was the first game I bought with my own money with my first job 😊. It was a good game, but battles were very slow.
