You are an amazing teacher. Such a calming voice. You've made me laugh and smile many times. I think you for that. And thank you for educating me on so many different topics. Be well.
Thank you SO Much- what an excellent intro to this instrument. Clear and ‘not daunting’. I can tell this is the beginning of a learning journey with your online content and tangible love and enthusiasm for the flute!
Thank you. I have one the same size as you just used and I want to learn to play it. I have a smaller one also and I guess I kinda had the right beginners learning technique and showed my just turned 3 yrs old granddaughter. We both did well and she loves it. Thank you again! 🫶🏼 We’ll see you again!

@@BlueBearFlutes Sometimes when I listen to flute music, -be it pan flute or Native American Flute play, I get choked-up with emotion that comes from I don't know where, and can feel tears welling-up. Thanks... I guess I will understand more (esp. after I have your book and finish these videos!) about why there is that aforementioned 3rd hole on my first (PVC) NAF's common F# design, LOL, it seems like the hole is a buffalo chip in the punch bowl for anything my brain wants to hear, hehe.. This is quite possibly the easiest and most fulfilling instrument in the world to play! Which flute works best for you is really up to you however I would recommend either a key of A, G or F sharp. You can check out my video on "flutes for small hands" to get an idea of the size of each and their tone. You can also get sound samples for my website bluebearflutes.com
I think it might be beneficial if you could let us know which flute (wood and tuning) you are using in your videos. I know I'm sitting here trying to guess at it. Thank you for all your dedication and passion!
Hey Matthew, thanks for watching! I've actually mentioned that in a couple of other videos but I guess I should probably post it in all of them! Videos prior to Spring 2018 were a western Cedar Key of low D. Videos after that were in eastern red cedar key of F-sharp. We actually have some big plans for the song as well as some tablature and other videos for it soon!
Nicely done. Would you be able to answer of the sounds are different according to various wood, specifically Brazilian rosewood. I'm not knowledgeable about any of this, nor if a piece could be made from B.R., or not, but I have some, wanted to know. Also, if you made the wood wall behind you, great job.
Hey Ray, thanks for watching! To answer your question, harder woods sound more "brassy" and softer woods sound more mellow. Rosewood, being of medium hardness, should produce and quite nice sound! That having been said, I never recommend buying a flute based on how exotic it's wood is unless that is just convenient for you or something you're inspired to do! Otherwise, there are woods that can produce similar quality sound for sizably less cash! It will be a beautiful flute however!
A 5-hole, because it will play like a modern 6-hole flute does and they each use similar tablature. They both also have the same amount of notes which they are capable of playing. I have lots of videos about five versus six hole flutes, you should check them out!
I just bought the 5 hole eastern cedar flute. It’s on sale and I’m pretty excited for it. That video of the one in the key of b is so perfect. I’m a guitarist so I’m happy to get some scales down on this.
I can totally put those six notes in any blues playing and I can expand that with jazz accompaniment, with another instrument, lots of options. It's a viable, toneful instrument. The beginner can be a full artist, in no time. Melody requires no music theory. It's from God.
Thanks for sharing this video. I have just bought my first Native American flute, which has 6 holes, but it does not have that bit on the tip where your is is? I have just moved from London to Glastonbury, Somerset so learning to play my Native American flute here will be awesome!

Those are tuning holes, you could just about cut the flute off there and it play the same. The tiny bit extra flute past those holes causes a tiny bit more resonance. I believe I did mention it in one video but it's been a while back. 😀
i just purchased a flute from you and im having a lot of trouble with the higher notes, yours sound so gentle and full but mine sound screechy and breathy, any recommendations?
just a quick question how would one play a C major / Minor “chord” or “note” i don’t know what you’d call it on a flute. Maybe just a C note lol. Thanks
It is a good question. It really depends on what type of flute you have. For example a flute in the key of A minor pentatonic will play the C note if you lift your bottom finger up. It is also possible to play the C major scale on an A Minor flute. Be sure to check our other videos out and how to play the Native American flute in under 10 minutes as we have several other scales and more information about the flutes and how to play them.
Hey Lori, great question! For the most part, when using a tuner, play the flute with all holes covered and that should be the key of the flute. To take it a step further, check each of the notes in the scale against my list of minor pentatonic scales on our info page to be certain. Feel free to message through our website if you have any other questions.
