    Do you like this direction of TTL first and then the First Review?
    Just to correct something in the video from BigScreen: the headset does not run at "2160x2160 per eye at 90Hz"
    Beyond runs at 2560x2560 per eye, at both 75Hz and 90Hz. DSC compression is used to fit the bandwidth into DisplayPort 1.4, similar to gaming monitors and other VR headsets.

    I think for the future we need to move away from reporting resolutions only and start reporting PPD. It’s more useful when it comes to VR where the FOV is very different from one headset to the other.

    • @stclaws9580

    • @gersongaete1574
      @gersongaete1574 Год назад +4

      @@stclaws9580 yeah it should be both, because resolution is still important, specially for pc vr players since the higher it is, the harder to run it, and PPD doesnt tell you much, because FOV can difer and a lower PPD can be actually more taxing than another because its pushing more pixels yet it still has less clarity

    • @JAKOB1977
      @JAKOB1977 Год назад +3

      no it aint.. PPD is not a good factor to rely on, as its so heavily FOV contaminated, and low FOV will elevate the PPD, and that aint ehat users want.. they want immersion in VR and like they are in the VR-scene (right?) and not like they are looking thrue a binocular.
      FOV and PPI values are relevant, as PPI will indicate the pixelsize.
      Pico4 is at 123 diagonal FOV (105 vertical and 105 horisontal) and 1193 PPI (pixel pr inch) it got like 2x 2.56" screens at 2160x2160 at each of the 2 screens. 9.33 mio pixels.
      BigScreen beyound is very small screens.. not sure its diagonal FOV, but it seems to have merely 90 horisontal FOV and 93 vertical, likely down to its very small screens. that are only 2x 1" big at 2560x2560 and gives an PPI at ludicris 3600 PPI.. but the screens that are merely 1" big and to give a immersion feel.. could be to small for an ideal screen for VR, as you need to magnifye the image a lot with lenses, as 1" screen is tiny as f.. and the less lens work you have to do on an image, the better, if you want an even sharpness and clarity..
      but sofar I think it looks decent on Beyound.. there are quite alot of trailing at the edges, fx the "system map" at the left side 6:01 but could be the recording, and likely not magnifiying lens con.

  • @RowdyMatt51
    @RowdyMatt51 Год назад +2

    In hindsight, there are a few very important things in this video that hasn't been pointed out that I would like to mention about the big screen
    1 this video is older and the headset is a older model. big screen now has different lenses with an increased FOV from this model, So you will be able to see more of the picture
    2 you might not notice it but he mentions in the video that he runs the headset at 90 Htz instead of 75 htz.
    The issue with that is 90 htz is a different resolution 1920x1920 then is scaled up to 2560x2560. While 75htz is 2560x2560 native. If you want to take a look at the difference in quality you can go on the big screen main site and tap on the micro display options and it shows you comparisons of the 75 versus 90 modes.
    So big screen looks even better then what is showed here. Props to the G2 though still. Underrated headset.
    Other than that, this is a great video and is one of the best videos out there on the big screen.

    We can clearly see the disadvantage of the old index lenses here. As the image is only really clear if you have teh lenses very close to your eye AND in the right spot. BigScreen BEYOND is very impressive, will probably be many peoples first "second" headset. Especially if they have wornout their index XD Just the comfort alone makes it worth the price, and since the image is even a little sharper and clearer, I see no disadvantage here. Potentially it's a great daily driver rather then the occasional dive in to VR that the index is, due to the fatigue it brings.

  • @Nobody-Nowhere

    I think the lack of screen door effect comes from the fact that those lenses can't resolve the pixels, so basically it's like a optical softener.
    Samsung Odyssey+ had this soft screen in front of the OLED panels to mitigate the screen door effect. But you do also lose sharpness.
    Micro oleds have so tiny pixels, that it requires extremely good lenses to resolve them. This then limites the actual real resolution you can get out of them.

    • @zackmac5917

      Beyond is 2560 x 2560 per eye, and, 28 PPD.
      Samsung Odyssey + is 1440 x 1600 per eye, and 14 PPD.
      Not even close. Beyond is orders of magnitude greater in resolution and ppd.
      Nothing to do with a soft screen to mitigate sde like Samsung odyssey plus.
      It's entirely the resolution and density of the tiny pixels. There's no sde because it's really that sharp.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere Год назад +1

      @@zackmac5917 I don't think you got the point. I was referring to the Odyssey+ simply as a device that used a soft filter to mitigate the screen door effect.
      If it were that sharp, then you would see the pixels. What i'm saying, is that its not sharp enough to resolve those pixels.. resulting a slightly soft image that then hides the screen door effect.
      Pixels on micro OLEDs are so small, that pancake lenses cant resolve them. They simply cant build them to that kind of resolving power.

    • @Nobody-Nowhere
      @Nobody-Nowhere Год назад +1

      @@zackmac5917 28 PPD is not that high, Aero & Crystal has 36PPD and you can still see the pixels. As they use larger panels so the lenses can resolve the pixels.

      @@Nobody-Nowhere ahh I see, yeah I sort of misread your comment.
      You might be right.
      If anything, that's going to greatly help, not hinder it.
      It's high enough resolution to be extremely sharp while showing no sign of actually being a display with pixels...aided by the Micro-OLED perfect black levels and colours so that also doesn't make it feel like a display... Sounds perfect!
      For me the best thing is tyriel's comment towards the end - that with the Beyond it feels like real life, with the G2, it feels like a game.
      Others are saying they are having the most immersive VR experience they've had, even having tried Crystal too.
      I'm sold on the Beyond tbh.
      But Crystal, if you can tolerate the size and weight, light leakage and greyer black levels etc, should be an incredible experience for sims, for a short sessions at least.

    Would you run a test like this with supersampling enabled on the Index? I bought a G2 after owning an index, and found the colors more washed out on the G2 than the Index when playing squadrons, and was not impressed by the increase in resolution at all like I expected to be. I have no idea why my experience didn't match the reviews. Running a 3090. But I do supersample in the Index, which does increase effective resolution; I think this might be the missing piece.

    Thanks Tyriel! Great job 👍. This makes me imagine how great things will be for VR in a few years when this form factor and decently capable PC VR rigs will be available at a more reasonable cost. Sadly, I have pretty much decided to skip PS VR2 as it still has reprojection and persistence motion blur issues. This made me sick on PS VR1 and I never adjusted to it. It was such a headache, literally speaking. If a PS5 PRO comes out and addresses the issue for triple-A games, I'll reconsider. Exciting times for VR nonetheless! 🙌🥳

    The problem with DisplayPort 1.4 was not really on my radar until now. Even if Valve or anyone else releases a headset with two 4k Micro OLEDs it won't be able to run that resolution at high refresh rates with current GPUs. AMD is too slow and not optimized for VR and Nvidia Lovelace doesn't support DP 2.0.

      @kazioo2 Год назад +2

      There is another possibility: a headset that doesn't even have a cable. I remember a discussion, not sure if it was Valve, but there was an argument that these long high bandwidth cables for VR are actually quite expensive and it might be reasonable to ship a headset with completely native wireless as the default mode. The codec from IMRNext that Nofio is using reduces the frame size 60x without noticeable degradation in picture and no latency (less than 1 ms so impossible to detect).

      Depends what you're looking for. Based on what I read, the Beyond has a smaller field of view and a smaller refresh rate (although since it's microLED instead of LCD, it still feels smooth as heck). The contrast seems to be second to none though, and if you like horror games you're going to enjoy being plunged into complete darkness. The colours are darker though. Oh, and you forget it's on your face too, although the Index's overall comfort is often qualified to be second to none with amazing audio quality, whereas the Bigscreen Beyond doesn't have included audio.
