Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have both shown exceptional range, depth, and intensity on screen, but Ammonite reveals new colours. In this story of a visionary scientist and the young woman who changes her life, these two stars deliver performances of raw electricity.
Mary Anning (Winslet) devotes her days on Southwest England’s Dorset coast to finding and cataloguing fossils of ammonites, extinct and beautiful sea creatures. In the early 19th century this is no work for a woman, and no scientific society will have her. So Mary toils alone, even as male scientists visit to study and take credit for her work. When one visitor brings along his grieving wife, Charlotte (Ronan), then abandons her there to return to London, the two women have no one to turn to but each other.
Francis Lee’s follow-up to his award-winning God’s Own Country shows the same talent for powerful love stories in harsh environments. The rocky, windswept seaside of Lyme Regis is palpable here. Lee directs with a similar brisk urgency, cutting to the core of Mary’s anger and Charlotte’s pain, charting the gathering emotional storm that throws them together. As in God’s Own Country, Lee films physical passion without a shred of prudishness. He, Winslet, and Ronan forego period gloss for a portrait of desire that feels so much more true. And in showing the full gamut of Mary’s astringent brilliance and unvarnished lust, Winslet delivers one of the very best performances of her career.
Francis Lee is from West Yorkshire, England. He trained as an actor and worked in theatre, film, and television before turning to filmmaking. His debut feature, God’s Own Country (17), won numerous awards including Sundance’s World Cinema Directing prize, the London Film Critics’ Circle Award for Breakthrough British/Irish Filmmaker, British Independent Film Awards for both Best British Independent Film and Best Debut Screenwriter, and the Bill Sherwood Award (Best First Feature) at Toronto’s Inside Out Film and Video Festival. Ammonite (20) is his latest feature.

"Women know what women want" Hilarious line from Kate. I love how important portraying a LGBTQ relationship is to Kate and how she describes it as emotional. It's also great how they all felt so safe on set. So excited for this film! I can already feel this is gonna be a beautiful film and probably quite emotional.

“It made me question how I have kind of allowed myself to be steered by writing in the past. You know, when I’ve been a part of something that has been a male and a female intimate relationship. So often, part of the romance is the man taking the woman and the woman allowing herself to be taken. And it made me kinda mad at myself. Like, have I done that? You know, I’m used to speaking up for myself, and being strong, but there’s something very automatic that tends to happen in the writing when it’s about a heterosexual couple in an intimate setting. And there was something so incredibly equal about this, it made me feel quite emotional and grounded and as Saoirse said, safe and equal. We’re women. Women know what women want. So there’s a sort of shorthand that we already had that was fantastic and definitely helped. You know, I mean, I do have to say that. There was something, it was different. It was different but the same because it was equal.”

@@ameliaagustina4794 it's implying how serendipitous their meeting was with doing an actors on actors interview & random meetings before doing this film that was so rewarding for them both, having created such a strong partnership as co-actors in the movie. She's saying that it may never happen again in that order of how it happened for them to reach the point where they end up working together. Bt I think soairsi is also referring to the pandemic and physical contact being possible again. Lol. Js my interpretation

The National Treasures of Britain and Ireland! Kate and Saoirse, the Oscars are waiving.....
Glad that Kate discovered this sense of equality that happens between two women who have fallen in love, and how they will express it in their lovemaking. One does not just lay back like with a man/woman connection. Lesbians have been trying to get that point across to their hetero counterparts for long decades. So impressed with the story, loved how it came about with Director Francis, and where it took Mary & Charlotte. Gemma was also amazingly real... as she is in Gentleman Jack. I had to leave the ending knowing that these two women were (actually real) friends that would love each other but would need to span the divide, clearly, in Mary's favor due to her passion for her work. I do wish, at times, that actors/director would talk about specific scenes. My mind was blown a bit when Mary peed on the beach, wiped her peed hands on her dress then torn apart her pastie to share with Charlotte. lol Loved the 'swimming' scene.
The fact that there were scenes I expected Kate to cry but she didn't, made me love this movie more.

Ammonite is really a wonderful film, fascinating one indeed. Both actresses really makes it more special as they both really had chemistry connection in the movie. The director really good at making it a good still movie.

A good director, two great actresses, an interesting story: this film can be nothing but a very good film.
It's interesting, Celine Sciamma who wrote and directed "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" also spoke of equality when it comes to intimacy between two women.
Right? I just watched PoaLoF last week and I can't stop thinking about how greatly written the movie is. I actually want to read the screenplay just to imagine what Celine imagined writing it. And the two actresses have a freakin' great chemistry. I can't wait to watch this film. I've watched some lesbian films but PoaLoF is on another level.

We cannot wait for this movie. Long overdue these two got together the best of British and the best of Ireland, I am sure they brought the story beyond expectations, which will of course have its critics because of the context of the core subject matter

I was very interested in this movie, but you discover that the director also did God's Own Country makes me SO excited to see the film. God's Own Country is a masterpiece and defiantly in my top three favourite films. I have full faith Ammonite is going to be wonderful.

I found a lot of bad reviews about this film, but it didn't influence me to go to watch this film. I'm sure Lee has a different way and style when it comes to conveying the message in his films (He has a very high artistic spirit and and he is very poetic). This is the film I've been waiting for.
And also I love how the two actors know each other. Kate and Saoirse are a team. I don't know, but I felt like Kate and Saoirse had a bond, chemistry, long before they worked together, they felt like they admired and supported each other. I was delighted to find out: Kate and Saoirse choreographed the sex scenes themselves. Hearing them feel safe and comfortable during a sex scene made my mind calm. Bless to have Kate and Saoirse in this beautiful film. I love both of them!
Infact there are lots of positive reviews from BBC, The Guardian, The Wrap, Deadline, The Telegraph etc I only found negative reviews from indiewire and Veriety. Rest all of them really loved the movie.

It's got mixed reviews at best but all of them praise Kate's and Saoirse's acting at best. I can't really say in my opinion whether it's a good or a bad film as I haven't seen it yet but reviews are mixed but mostly favourably with RT scoring a 64% and Metacritic scoring a 78%. Now, I don't try to trust RT scores as I like to form my own opinion but if things go well, you can still watch it.

The film is beautiful.
But it must be said that there are enormous historical inaccuracies.
First of all, it is not mentioned throughout the film that Charlotte Murchison was a well-known geologist in science, and what is absurd is that Charlotte Murchison (born in the year 1788) was 11 years older than Mary Anning (born in the year 1799). Why did the director change all this information that is reported in all the biographies of the two scientists?
To conclude, however, the film, beyond the obvious historical inaccuracies, I liked it a lot and the acting of the actresses is sublime.

Normally, I'm not intrigued by movies about same-sex relationships, especially between two women, because I find lesbian movies to be more about fanservice between two women than the depth of the story between two women. Lesbian movies are the same to me. Even the movie Carol, which I saw, didn't fully grab my attention. But a fanfictional story about a relationship between Mary Anning - this amazingly historical woman who made great discoveries - and geologist Charlotte Murchison, that would be an interesting film to see. I hope it'll focus on the plot than fanservice.
