You have to play some really mediocre levels (not bad, just really mid) every once in a while to maintain appreciation for the really GOOD stuff. Because right now there's so much quality content (both new and the archive over the last several decades) that it's easy to get spoiled!
TNT Evilution getting some attention recently: Civvie plays it in shorts, Zero Master drops a Nightmare single segment run and then our favourite pumpkin man drops some cursed TNT-stuff. Dynamite I say!
I made the MIDI for MAP01 and MAP05 as well as MAP05 itself, as well as the intermission MIDI. I taught music dictation and aural skills in university and had an unfair advantage! Glad you approved!
I have a bit of an eidetic memory when it comes to music and map layouts. What's funny is, I cringe because I can see all the imperfections in MAP05 that don't match the original (I didn't remember the textures of the marble faces, forgot some of the walls and hallways were angled, and didn't get certain enemy placements right). I meant to upload a fix for the missing texture as well as a fix for MAP15 before decino got to this playthrough (it's possible to lock yourself out of the secret exit), but I lost my hard drive before I could get to that.
@@KernelLeak Thankfully, I had backed up all my other stuff, including my in-progress megawad, I just completely forgot about these particular WADs when I formatted my old computer to sell it.
What's funny is, I made that map, and I can tell you exactly what I got wrong with it. The marble faces have the wrong textures. Some of the stair textures are wrong. I didn't angle some of the walls/hallways like the original. I used slightly different texturing in some areas. I didn't get height and lighting differences quite right.
Speaking of TNT, Civvie failed to realize that someone is going to take all the shorts he's posting and stitch them together which means Civvie is making a full 30 minute TNT episode whether he likes it or not.
I don't think he cares. He just wanted something to shut people up about Evilution but not in a way that he had to torture himself editing. I mean he's still kinda torturing himself by playing it.
With how Decino missed that he picked up the chainsaw and overlooked that rocket launcher secret, i'm now sure he's playing the game blindfolded as an additional challenge.
So happy you're tackling this wad in multiple maps per video. I've just got in from the pub and I can't tell you how enjoyable it is to have this video to watch while I stuff my face with pizza.
4:18 - Yes, I remember this rendition. The MIDI started with a 10-second stretch of weird humming, which was just one sound drowning out all others. This was most apparent on the Doom 95 port.

Hey, creator of map 3 here. When I could not remember the enemies I went what felt right (which is probably why things are generally harder then they where in TNT). As for the archvile, my guess is that he woke up and walked over the teleporter to leave the secret area.
having finished my HBP run of TNT, I can finally start watching this! (Well, I finished it like, half a month ago, but I have a very long watch later list) Can't wait to see this WAD get *even more cursed* by being remade from memory. Edit: I'm thoughly satisfied with the cursedness so far. Although, I can't fairly judge Warmhole, since I didn't actually know about the dark world gimick. I never managed to figure out how to get out of the portal area in the dark world, and thought the map was crazy weird, with an exit hidden behind a random trap and a random optional area with nothing in it but a confusing room that lead to a portal to a useless recreation of the same room it came from. With all the other random BS in TNT, I just kinda accepted it. That's a really cool idea, It'd be cool to see an entire wad based around that gimmick. Although, there probably is one. If there isn't whoever makes it should refrence Wormhole with the same weird "this one room opens up too quickly so you can finish the map in 10 seconds" thing.
This will be interesting. I find it hard to believe there exist people who can correctly remember Evilution maps without replaying them recently. Will be cool to see how many maps get "remembered" as much better than they were, like Wormhole. It's easy to remember Evilution as a step up in difficulty from Doom 2 but nowadays it's really slow and boring for a huge amount of levels, so if you try to recreate it with interesting encounters you're doing it wrong.
These were surprisingly accurate! There were some moments where I felt they were off, but they did so many other things right I really think that I would'nt do any better. MAP04 was the furthest from the original, but still got the main beats. And the maps overall had a lot more monsters. But otherwise, impressive!

And I definetly have some theories about that linedef in map 4... I guess in "normal, just going forward" progression it is perfectly reasonable 1 - I mean, wormhole is a secret and you just won't stuck in a map if you somehow don't find it, get lost and return to beginning, so it's a thoughtful map design ?... 2 - Though I'm not sure, does this linedef open something else in a map, like in wormhole dimension ? Need to check, I guess... And It feels like I'm missing something... Why do you get so excited for Techpillars ? 😂 Well, I understand that they are really great and cool and have special connection to chaingun, but don't I miss some ultra epic meme or cult or something ? Even though I guess I'm also starting to feel the hardly explainable feelings for them...
@@Kikiapina Yep, I remember that special fact from his playthrough of doom 2 map 27, so it's understandable why one can get excited about that one special techpillar But also he got excited to see them in recent viewer submission ("Facade !") and here, in TNT's recreation map 5, so it makes me wonder about it...
I watched your playthrough of the original TNT (which I haven't done before) in preparation for this, so I can better see what's different. Hope they remembered the two unkillable enemies.
I don't know how you can't notice the layouts of the map. It's definitely not the same and it's definitely cursed. You're just not seeing it yet. If you were to play TNT Evilution more often, you'd definitely notice the changes from the beginning itself
I'm not the only one whose first reaction was like: "Somebody had to remake Habitat and Mount Pain from memory?! May their Doom runs be ever blessed...", right? :))
I played map04 of TNT a lot of times and I thought about that linedef, I thought it was supposed to be in the dark dimension instead of the original one, but then I played another map made by Ty that was a solo map he made and it made a similar thing where I beat the map without exploring the rest of the map, so the linedef in Wormhole might be intentional..

Talking about chainsaws... weren't there originally a chainsaw in beginning of dark world of map 4 or something near warmh... * cough *, excuse me, wormhole portal ?
And I definetly have some theories about that linedef in map 4...
I guess in "normal, just going forward" progression it is perfectly reasonable
1 - I mean, wormhole is a secret and you just won't stuck in a map if you somehow don't find it, get lost and return to beginning, so it's a thoughtful map design ?...
2 - Though I'm not sure, does this linedef open something else in a map, like in wormhole dimension ? Need to check, I guess...
And It feels like I'm missing something... Why do you get so excited for Techpillars ? 😂
Well, I understand that they are really great and cool and have special connection to chaingun, but don't I miss some ultra epic meme or cult or something ? Even though I guess I'm also starting to feel the hardly explainable feelings for them...
There is only one tech pillar in Doom 2
@@Kikiapina
Yep, I remember that special fact from his playthrough of doom 2 map 27, so it's understandable why one can get excited about that one special techpillar
But also he got excited to see them in recent viewer submission ("Facade !") and here, in TNT's recreation map 5, so it makes me wonder about it...
7:55 I didn't expect for there to be a blockmap bug in the video lol
gonna have to put this on the back burner for a sec while I watch your original tnt run Edit: Surprisingly good recreations.
Depends... MAP05 was pretty accurately recreated. MAP04 - definitely not :P
I'm not the only one whose first reaction was like: "Somebody had to remake Habitat and Mount Pain from memory?! May their Doom runs be ever blessed...", right? :))
I feel for the poor soul who had to remake Administration Center...
I can't wait to see someone like MtPain27 play the recreated Mount Pain and then point out everything wrong or different with it.
Oh yeah, the something's not right series is back!
Oboi, I'm 10 sec in and I already know this is going to be a treat :D
This was awesome!
I really enjoied it.
