  • August 13/2024 Summer Hike, Alberta Canada
In my opinion this hike has the best views looking down at Canmore and stunning 360 views.
Today we are in the Canmore area, and we will be summiting Ha Ling Peak. The trail is 8 kilometers (5 miles) with an elevation gain of 807 meters (2850 feet). We started our hike at 8:40AM and finished at 4:25PM. Our total time was 7 hours and 45 minutes. The trailhead is in the Goat Creek Day Use Area. The parking lot is a really good size. The only downside is driving up the gravel Spray Lakes Road (Smith Dorrien Trail, Highway 742).
From the parking lot, cross the Spray Lakes Road and you will see a sign saying Ha Ling Trail. You will hike up a road until you get to the Spray Lakes Canal. Once you cross the bridge over the canal turn right and after a short distance the trail will be on your left. The trail is well defined, they did a lot of work on trail a few years ago. They start you out going up a pretty good incline and then the trail eases up a bit. You will be in the trees for the first few kilometers. Just over .8k you will reach the first switchback. Just under 1.2k you will come across the first of many stone stairs on this trail. Now the trail will get steeper. Soon there will be some rocky sections on the trail. Just below 1.6k you will hit the next switchback. There is a little trail on your left here that will take you to a viewpoint. Here you will see EEOR (the East End of Rundle). Now the trail will get really rocky, but they have a railing on the right to help you up this section if needed. These rocks can be very slick if they are wet, as we found out on our way down. As you climb the incline will get steeper. Soon you will start to get views on your right. Once again there are a few rocky sections. At 2k you will hit the next switchback. Now you will start and get even better views on your left. The trail will ease up a little bit. At 2.5k you will arrive at the next switchback and there is also a trail on your left to take you to another viewpoint. Here you will have a great view of Whitemans Pond below you and EEOR across from you. To your left will be the Spray Valley and to your right is the Bow Valley. At 2.9k you will reach the first of many stone steps on the trail. I call this the stair master section. Be ready as there are a lot of stairs. Just over 3.2k you will arrive at the first of three wooden staircases. These are very steep. At the top of this staircase, you will have a great view of the mountains across the valley. The trail will really starts to open up now. From the second set of stairs, you will see Miner’s Peak in front of you. The second and third sets of stairs are not a long as the first set. At the base of the third set of stairs there is a bench that you can rest on. We were lucky enough to see a paraglider flying high above us. The trail will now take you left. This portion of the trail gets really steep, and it has a lot of rock and scree on it. You will now have a beautiful 180 view. Just over 3.4k you will arrive at the saddle. From here you will have a great view looking left at the summit of Ha Ling, Canmore and the Bow Valley below you. Be very careful here as the cliff has a sheer drop. To your right will be Miner’s Peak and Mount Lawrence Grassi. I had a quick break here and then continued on. From here the trail is not maintained up to the summit of Ha Ling. This portion of the trail is the steepest and hardest. At 3.8k you will arrive at the summit of Ha Ling. Get ready for stunning 360 views. Our elevation was 2478 Meters (8130 Feet). Once again be careful at the top. If you fall, you die. We had a light breeze at the top, but the winds can get strong up here. We enjoyed our lunch here and then proceeded back down. Having poles going down would be a good idea. As we started heading down we could see the weather was changing and rain clouds were heading our way. Just below the saddle you will see a trail on your left that will take you up to Miner’s Peak. We made our way down as fast as we could. About 1k from the parking lot it started to rain lightly and by the time we got back to our vehicle it was pouring.
This is a very popular hike in the Canmore area. Even if you cant make it to the summit of Ha Ling it’s a great hike up to the saddle. It is short but it does have a lot of elevation gain.

I don't know why I sometimes say, "Here we go!", before we start, and shout "Beauty!" at the top. Anybody knows?

Wonderful hike! It's been 20 years since I did that one, the trailhead and trail itself sure has changed! I really miss living in Canmore and getting out to enjoy all the great things to do! I worked mornings at Smitty's, done by 2 and spent the rest of my days exploring the area either on foot or biking. Now I enjoy the sights vicariously through folks like you.
    Thank you!

It's such an awesome hike😁 I hiked it once before they did all the work on the trail. I like it better now with the long switchbacks. The wooden stairs definately look out of place🤣 Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

Paragliding seems like the smart way down!

It was scary walking along the edge but I had my arm way out there. The go pro makes it look worse than it was. It's not an easy hike especially on a person's knees. I wear slip on knee braces which really help on the way down ,and on longer hikes. Thanks so much for watching and commenting😁

@@LIVEONALBERTA I went a few years back holy crap it was packed must have been 200 plus people on that trip so hopefully there will be way less tomorrow. this is a good time to do it as the river crossing is much lower. I was down the sheep the other day trail clearing and i noticed the low water so mmmm good time to go to junction.
