    Great video on Gain Staging. Can you explain how to use the Gate feature on the Normailzer. I noticed you did not adjust it and I'm curious when you might or why it stays and defaults to -60? Thanks!

    • @HoRNetWeb
      @HoRNetWeb  13 дней назад +1

      well the gate is used to avoid that low level signals gets super boosted, so anything below that levels is skipped for gain evaluation. I think -60 is a sensible default for music and speech and I rarely touch it.

    Fantastico Saverio!! Davvero tanta stima. Se ti chiedessi, ma quindi sottraggo livello max a livello nominale ed ho la headroom? In caso di reamp chitarre bassi, utilizzeresti lo stesso la tape machine in catena per controllare i picchi?

    • @HoRNetWeb
      @HoRNetWeb  Год назад

      hmm no aspetta forse non ho capito, un esempio e' piu' facile, l'SSL2 ha: "Max Instrument Input Level: +15 dBu, Max Line Input Level: +24 dBu" significa che se registri con l'ingrosso mic devi mettere -15 con reference nel VU Meter, se invece usi l'ingresso linea devi mettere -24 perché quello e' il livello massimo gestibile dalla parte analogica della scheda. Per quanto riguarda i picchi, beh si puoi usare Tape ed e' perfetto ma tieni presente che ti colora il suono, se vuoi una cosa piu' pulita puoi usare un limite con release cortissima.

    Saverio, once again Thank You!
    I have a few questions/comments:
    A) Did I hear you say that the VU metering in and in are exactly the same?
    B) If so, one thing I've always thought, is that VU Meter confuses people because they/we think of a classic swinging needle VU Meter, like the one in Tape. So for VU MK5, could you not ADD the option to view either the current 'bar graph', the 'classic Needle' exactly like the one in Tape, or both?
    I believe Many more people would pick it up if it did what VUMT, TB MVMeter, Waves VU, etc already do with the obvious addition of the HoRNet "Automatic Gain Staging" feature (which I think you should start calling HoRNet A.G.S.).
    C) Since you have the IPC working for the Group feature, would it be possible to create something else that's been missing since the dawn of DAWs: an actual Meterbridge.
    In the Analog world, the 2-Inch Tape Machine -> Console -> 2-Track Tape Machine ALL had VU Meters. We could glance at the Multitrack and see 24 Meters dancing. Look at the top of the board and not only see the levels of every track, but also How they were Moving Together, which I think is something that is unheard of in the DAW generation, but was a fundamental part of "Performing a Mix" on an analog console.
    So, knowing what you've already developed, And what is possible from Izotope, Voxengo, Melda, Softube, and more and more year by year, what if I put across all of my tracks, and on say the master track, the looked like the meterbridge on a console with a long row of dancing needles receiving their level from each track.
    Then the same idea for HoRNet Tape, except maybe the is 3-rows of 8 meters, like on a 2-inch machine. And two of those side-by-side would make 48-tracks, like in most commercial studios back in the day (forget about the SMPTE sync tracks).
    I would LOVE to have a straight row of say 48+ clean VU Meters across the top of one of my monitors, and another whole monitor off to the side fullscreen dedicated to the MTK Meterbridge.
    I'm fairly certain all of this is possible, and honestly I think you've already done most of the code. None of this affects audio at all, just makes Viewing what you've already developed much better and more intuitive. Especially for anyone coming from analog. And I don't know of any developer that has gotten this right exactly.
    So that lane is wide open.

    • @HoRNetWeb
      @HoRNetWeb  Год назад +2

      Hi, well that' a feature I wanted to add sooner or alter but to make it modern instead of a fixed number of VU Meter I need to make each meter adapt in size to the amount of instances available. We were talking some months ago with a professional here in Italy that wanted to create a "meter bridge" plugin or app so I'm pretty sure it'll come in the next version!

      @@HoRNetWeb Ahhh… so it Is the right idea! Well, I was assuming that a finite number would be easier than an infinite number, based on what I’ve seen with IPC from other developers.
      My request if you Do have to pick finite numbers per instance: PLEASE stick to “audio numbers”, meaning multiples of 8.
      Think about real consoles and tape machines, in buckets of 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 64, etc.
      Then think about the monitors that will display the plugin, the majority are 16:9 aspect ratio, and either 1920x1080 or 3840x2160.
      I imagine two scenarios:
      A) a dedicated FULLSCREEN monitor with 48 or ideally 64 VU Meters all the time. You would develop a kind of muscle memory, and always know where to look to see your levels on any given channel. And see them all at once.
      B) a straight row of meters across either the top or bottom of the main GUI monitor. Say you had 16 or 24 meters “pinned” in place, and could bank through buckets of 24 at a time quickly getting to the section you’re working on.
      Thanks for the reply.
      For me I have far more plugins than I need, but this is something that has been missing for 25 years.

    • @G_handle
      @G_handle Год назад

      @@HoRNetWeb On a related topic, is there a place, website, book to study what is possible with plugin coding?
      For instance, you’ve got plugins that talk to each other, IPC, which is amazing. (A)
      But plugins can also communicate with the Host and get say Track Names and Colors, as well as channel level, pan, solo, mute status.
      I believe the metering and gain reduction information as well? (B)
      But then I have plugins like Softube Console 1 OSD and SSL 360 and UAD Console, that run plugins inside the DAW that communicate with separate applications running outside of the DAW. (C)
      All of these developments have truly made the DAW a much more integrated system, that interconnects with the rest of the studio in ways not possible 25 years ago.
      I’d love to Read Up on whatever your following to keep up with these developments.
      Thanks Brotha!

    I want some simple help. I can't understand the difference of Horner VU meter MK4 vs Normaliser? I want a plugin that automatically helps me gain stage all the incoming signal, so afterwards any plugin like compressor/tape etc, could react properly. Which plugin should I buy so ... Normaliser or Hornet VU Meter mk4 and what's the difference!!!???

    • @HoRNetWeb
      @HoRNetWeb  7 месяцев назад

      Hi both plugin can normalise the signal to a given level, VU Meter only uses VU for normalisation while with TheNormalizer can use dBFS, VU, RMS, or LUFS for the level analysis. It's more complete on the normalisation front but lack metering while VU meter provide metering but only normalises to VU.

    So my Behringer uphoria 1820 states that both mic line input are 11dbu. That means I would have to set the VU Meter at -11db, for instrument input the specs are 18dbu so then I would have to switch the VU meter to -18?

    • @HoRNetWeb
      @HoRNetWeb  Год назад +1

      exactly you got it right. both are the real headroom for you inputs so use those numbers in the reference of vu meter and make sure you don't go over 0 since especially for the mic inputs you don't have a large headroom

      @@SuchBeautifulFlowers record to the levels your sound card want, then you adjust gain again inside the DAW for the analog emulations. remember that every gain operation inside the daw is perfect since it's just a multiplication while the gain at which you are recording affects noise floor and distortion

    Is it best to place the vu mk4 at the beginning of the chain before any effects processing or after any processing?

    • @LeoSonics
      @LeoSonics Год назад +1

      Yes, the idea is to get a reading on the level before going into any plug ins or effects. Going in "too hot" (peaking above 0) makes SOME plugs act crazy with a off putting sound as a result. SOME plug ins might react to the hot signal with "more saturation". But generally put it before to gain stage the signal before your applied effects is a good way to keep an eye on head room with out having to reset for each change you make.

    • @HoRNetWeb
      @HoRNetWeb  Год назад +3

      You can do both, i would use it as first insert to make sure the analog emulations that follows are fed with the right amount of signal, and you can use it as last to make sure no track is out of lace before the mater bus, but keep in mind that in most DAWS the inserts are pre-fader so if you raise the level with the fader of the daw the reading you get from VU meter as last insert is inaccurate.
