I don't know why a lot of people are saying this phone is "the best value in 2019” and comparing it with phones like the OnePlus 6T or Samsung devices. If all you care about is updates and the camera quality, sure, maybe? But it has a Snapdragon 670, which is noticably slower than the Snapdragon 855, 845, and even 835. It's only got 4GB of RAM compared to the 6 and 8GB standard on most devices of the same price. And importantly, it only has 64GB of storage and no expansion. I don't know. I guess if you're a super causal user, it's a decent deal. But I feel like a lot of reviewers are overselling the phone by comparing it to flagships, simply because the camera is great and it gets updates quickly. The lower-tier hardware specs actually translate to day-to-day slower performance, and you can see this in other reviewers' videos, like The Verge's.
@@deyanand1955 yes, google might not have as much control on hardware as apple has on theirs, but a single device can be optimized well enough by the software provider to make sure the performance is great. Also ram management of smaller companies like oneplus has always been terrible so lower ram isn't a good argument.
A lot of people don't even need the best chipset and won't be able to tell the difference. But the best camera? That will definitely be noticed. Many competitors have 6/8 gigs of RAM, sure. But they probably also have aggressive ram management so you won't even get to use it all properly. A 64GB only option does suck though
Well the headphone jack was basically the reason I didn't keep the Pixel 3, so this might be a game changer

Nice review. The one thing I was hoping for is to have the ip rating. Since I 1st got this in my defunct Note 7, I can't use phones without it anymore. Call me weird, but sometimes I take my phone to the shower to watch videos just like this :)
The only thing is that US buyers probably don't care about price that much in these days of "buy 1, get 1 on us!" ads being heard everywhere. Its more about carrier availability and it sounds like that has improved.
WELL WELL WELL after 3 YEARS ..... SOMEONE at Google's hardware department ACTUALLY MANAGED TO *THINK* with *THAT* part of the body crafted by evolution for THAT EXACT PURPOSE
Just bought the 3A today from T-Mobile so far it's a pretty good phone liking everything about it.kind of like the old Nokia Lumia with a polycarbonate body and excellent camera
I've been using a Nexus 5 as my daily driver since it launched back in 2013 and the 3A is the phone I'm finally upgrading to. You absolutely nailed this video - it does feel like we're stepping back in time to the good old days. I also really hope there are no unforeseen issues with the phone because if not I can really see it shake up the US market. Apple and Samsung made their "budget" devices $750 this cycle. With a camera this good, a familiar brand name, and this price, I'm expecting the 3A to absolutely fly off the shelves.
Hitting every carrier is really what they should have done for the the 3. I can't tell you how many times I would talk to friends or coworkers about changing but Verizon was in the way and getting out of contracts is a hassle for sum people.
Excellent video ! I like this phone, being an owner of a Pixel 2 XL, I like the compromises to keep the price down. It is frustrating seeing cellphones over $ 1,000.00 CAD. It should be interesting seeing what Google releases next year and what the Pixel 4 & 4 XL are.
I'm on a Pixel 2XL contract. Have just over a year left. Depending on the Pixel 4, and other competitors, the 3 and 3a will be at the top of my watch list for next year. Fantastic camera and stock android? That's all I want
Hello MrMobile. I trust you that you choose your words carefully, so can you please let me know why you said that the camera from 3A is "almost" identical to the one from the original Pixel? You said then that it has the same sensor and software. It's the lens?
It doesn’t have the Pixel Visual Core that’s on the Pixel 3. This is why it’s slower to do things like Night Sight shots. Apps like Instagram and Snapchat use the PVC to take better pictures, so you lose out on that too, but if you’re taking pictures on the main camera app first then it won’t change the quality. Other than that it’s the same camera, so I think most people will see basically the same quality of photo, it’ll just be slower to process it. Not sure if the lens is any different, but I haven’t seen anything that suggests it is.
@@nofrillsshaving4244 you can buy them from regular electronic stores and use a package forwarding company. I'm in NL and bought my pixel from mediamarkt Germany. You pay some extra on shipping, but hey, it's possible! :)
Google has finally made a killer move with the pixel line after nearly 4 years, and it's great. I just hope that they maintain the 399 price point, unlike other "ultra-budget" flagship killer smartphone brands that increase their prices year after year due to a stifle in innovation. Also, this reminds me of the Samsung and Sony 'mini' and 'compact' line of smartphones, which I really liked.
Hurrah for the headphone jack! I'll take a good quality plastic casing over sodding glass any day of the week. But if there's no expandable storage the absolute MINIMUM that should be installed is 128gb, by preference 256gb or 512gb.
This is OG throwback to Nexus 5, the pinnacle of value - price - performance. To this day, my favorite phone, ever (out of hundreds I've owned). Google was always ahead of it's time. I love how people are going nuts about wireless charging today saying it's the greatest thing ever. Those poor plebes don't know I had wireless charging on my $299 Nexus 4 LOOOONG 7 years ago (in human years, 1 tech year is at least 10 human). I've had it on Nexus 4, 5, 6 and even 7 - yes, the Nexus 7 tablet had it as well. And they all worked on the original Nexus 4 wireless sphere pad. I've owned Nexus One, Nexus S, The Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 6p - the only one I didn't was Nexus 5x, it didn't attract my attention and 6p was released alongside it. Anyway, who's with me that Pixel 3a is the Nexus 8 we've been waiting for?
I work at best buy. And saw the boxes for the 3A and 3A XL and asked my manager if he knows about the phones and he said oh shit you aren't supposed to see that. And hid it under a curtain. Perfection.

I dont think ive missed out on the Pixel 3a even though i would appreciate the slightly smaller display and well....having a pixel.
Moto g7 still the top budget phone. Only thing better about this is the camera. If regular people cared about that they would've already bought the pixel 3 over Samsung and apple. But I will say the midrange selection in carrier stores is terrible so these might do ok COMPARED TO OTHER MIDRANGE CARRIER OFFERINGS. Anybody that actually has several hundred dollars to buy a midrange phone can do much better than this for cheaper. Google should've only charged $200 for a plastic phone with huge bezels.
@@sdreeves42 I agree... A lot of the android one offerings from Moto, Xiaomi, Nokia already provide the same experience that the Pixel 3A would provide and have better designs and build quality. Cameras are fairly decent too... It is still overpriced, no doubt about it !
Really good to see Google resetting phone prices to this area with a great phone. Stock Android, updates, that camera...id seriously consider this over a full Pixel, especially when buying a sim only deal and a handset.
I have the s9 and it works just fine... u will get better specs such as the 845 chip, and the phone lasts me a days worth of use (6h screen on time after a year of use...) it has ip rating in case accidents occur but u shouldn't intentionally submurge it... and the software is getting better especially with oneui... it's worth a buy If ur not gonna buy the s10 this year...
I don't blame you, the S9 is probably a better deal for those who don't care too much about the camera or the stock android experience (smoother performance & faster, more reliable updates).
Affordable, stock android and good after sales support with the advantage of having a small screen, well well well its a win win. All the new flagships are just crossing the 6" screen size, manufacturers have started to forget that the human palm size is still the same over the years, there's no upgrade in this department.
Alex Nannos xiaomi’s business model is based on very low profit margins which means they can afford to put in top specs in their phone and sell the phone for not much more than the cost of all the components. Edit: spelling
@@dvo5808 I understand but I am a consumer looking for the best possible product on my desired price range so I don't understand why someone would spend 400$ on a midrange phone when you can easily find high end specs on the same budget and call it a good purchase!
Alex Nannos completely understandable, another thing to consider is software support - you aren’t just paying for the hardware, you’re paying for the excellent camera and operating system software. Of course you can always install a ROM and customize your phone the way you want but a lot of people DON’T want to go through those extra steps and just want to use their phone out of the box.
@@dvo5808 I assume just 1-2% of Android users install custom roms nowadays so i get your point. Camera and software updates are important but Mi9 for example scored a higher score than pixel on Dx0 if that matters (maybe its becase it has 3 cameras) and xiaomi phones even on 200$ have frequent OTA updates for at least 1-2 years so i think the gap became smaller now.
I'm curious about the wallpaper on all of hand-on videos of Pixel 3a. Is Google made them specifically for media attendees for I/O? Or, does it has some kind of site or tools to generate that?

The second notch glitch some have had where the phone adds a second notch on the side of the display. One was bad enough. But the 3axl doesn't have a notched display. Honestly these designs of the 3a and 3axl are what the 3 and 3xl should have been with the snapdragon 845 and at least 6gb of RAM. For 400 dollars you are better off with an older Galaxy phone unless you take a metric fuck ton of pictures. You can't beat the pixel camera for 400 dollars with night site for low light pictures or what ever Google calls it The only thing hindering the 3A and 3aXL is the snapdragon 670. Should have been the SD710 and the 4gb of ram. Should have been 6gb.
Yikes. 4gb is enough unless you're expecting flagship specs of 6-8gb ram. Admittedly Google hasn't read the memo themselves but I'm sure even they will be increasing their flagships with more ram
@@supaahflyy well when the 3 and 3XL came out at $800-$1000 4gb is abysmal and unacceptable. That's flagship price for mid-range specs ram wise when everyone else had 6 or 8gb ram for the same price. It's more acceptable in a 400 dollar phone but the history of poor ram management issues on the 3 and 3xl I wouldn't hold my breath the 3a and 3aXL will be any better
If it kept the SD845 or greater, it would be a modern Nexus device and I'd be buying. What annoys me with modern phones is the need to hide the front facing cam and sensors for small bezels has led to even dumber compromises. Dumb notches, pin holes and mechanical popup weak points. The 3A shows this isn't necessary.

Exactly, thing is this will sell. But it's coming at a strange time. Sammy has taken all the air out with the S10 line. Plus too many compromises to supposedly get to this price point. Right there with you in hoping that this truly can become the 'everypersons' Android device. I've grown tired of family and friends coming to me with issues on their budget Galaxy J devices to their flagship LG's, only to find them running tons of bloat and software that's ancient. As a regular Pixel user I am excited for what this new hardware push could do and already got my mother-in-law to order the 3a!
I have never been so early for the video to be in 360p 🤩

Whoa, I'm definitely interested. Welcome back, headphone jack
Electronic Abyss hate me if want but I HATTEE headphone jack and cords for me the cord gets caught on everything and just yank my earbuds or headphones out/off can’t be helped just happens I know stupid excuse but hey 🤷♂️ just like me blue tooth,
@@DrMaverick777No, no hate... 👀 juuust don't plug anything in then. Simple as that. I personally like having the choice to use the headphone jack _OR_ my bluetooth.💁 Sounds like you're mostly trying to convince yourself of something, tbh lol. Like if you got the right phone or not. I'm sure you did it that's your preference, as you'd never use the jack anyways. As for me, even as "old" as it is, I think I'll go with the 3a. That's more my price range atm, and it has what I'm looking for for where I am in life. Nothing less. Hope your phone still suits you well! 😃
Who cares? 🙄🙄
Polycarbonate instead of glass is an upgrade in my book.
ProductFRED Completely agree with you. I don’t see it selling well at all. So much near to OP
Apple has proved again and again that specs aren't everything when it comes to performance
Prateek Choudhary thats because they create the chips and the OS.
This video is pure Pro!
Welcome back Nexus, we missed you.
I got my 3A today, I was playing with it, and it does remind me a lot of my Nexus 6p as in usability.
The only thing is that US buyers probably don't care about price that much in these days of "buy 1, get 1 on us!" ads being heard everywhere. Its more about carrier availability and it sounds like that has improved.
WELL WELL WELL
after 3 YEARS .....
Google, you've just hit the "G" spot ❤️
will be a huge hit for sure!
Bought a new oneplus 6t yesterday for only $400 in a sale. Nice deal, right?
Edit: for the 8gb/128gb variant
Niceeeee!
Trust me oneplus in the best deal out there right now
Oxygen OS is way better than MIUI. MIUI is a deal breaker for me.
Haha me too. Got mine last Friday
I bought an s9 plus for $320 dollars
I always love the tune drop at 3:22. So cool.
Hitting every carrier is really what they should have done for the the 3. I can't tell you how many times I would talk to friends or coworkers about changing but Verizon was in the way and getting out of contracts is a hassle for sum people.
How can you not like such a crispy video from Mr. mobile. Still wayyyyy underrated.
Everything JUST changed. Are you sure it's changing again?!
Thank you for being honest about whether the specs will hold up to Pixel 3, *given* how it has performed for mere a 8 month old phone.
And the 3aXL went back to the 2xl design....no fugly notch!
I'll just wait for the pixel 4 in October. I've had the Pixel 2 and it's been great!
Only 399! What a great price!
Already 1080p, I guess I am not that early
I'm on a Pixel 2XL contract. Have just over a year left. Depending on the Pixel 4, and other competitors, the 3 and 3a will be at the top of my watch list for next year. Fantastic camera and stock android? That's all I want
Hello MrMobile.
I trust you that you choose your words carefully, so can you please let me know why you said that the camera from 3A is "almost" identical to the one from the original Pixel? You said then that it has the same sensor and software. It's the lens?
its probably due to the slightly weaker snapdragon 670 compared to the pixel 3's 845
As always love ur quality of vids, sometimes even more than MKBHD might I say.
I wonder if the Pixel-phones ever will be released in Sweden... Hey Google!!
Asking the same here in Finland... I'd love to buy one.
I think you can order them online? Not from the US, but other European countries that sell them.
@@SamarkandChan Yes, I think I can from UK, but still...

Google Pixel 3a: *exists*

Same launch price as the 32gb Nexus 5 but how many years later? My 2 XL is still running fine but that's very tempting
You were the fastest this one.
I wish the Nexus line hadn't been discarded.
Definitely interested! Will need to wait for the final review.
This pixel is better then the flagship pixel. Lmao. Glad they brought the headphone jack back. Definitely buying this as my secondary device!
Only because of the price.

I work at best buy. And saw the boxes for the 3A and 3A XL and asked my manager if he knows about the phones and he said oh shit you aren't supposed to see that. And hid it under a curtain. Perfection.

I know they had the nexus line but I think this is also the result of having HTCs design team now who was known for this type of mid-range phone.
Concerned about the lower tier Snapdragon but otherwise looks like a killer deal.
Performance shouldn't be THAT much worse. I mean, c'mon, even 6xx series Snapdragons are plenty enough for most people.
I'm very eager for your review Michael. I've wanted to get my brother a smartphone and this phone has most of what a 1st phone should have.
For $200 more you can get the pixel 3
For $400 more galaxy s10
For $800 more iphone xs max
For $2500 more macbook pro
For $30.000 more a car
For $200.000 more a house
1st world problem here
Or you could get a Mi 9 for 450-500. Much better deal. OLED, 855, 8GB RAM, the whole shebang.
Now you got me seriously thinking of getting a Pixel 3A...
Wonderful video, watched on HQ... Normally my data cap means I only watch in 240 or 360p but watched in 1080p today. I've been missing out.
Your videos look gorgeous on the Samsung Galaxy S8 display😭
Just bought a Sandstone White 8gb/ 128GB SD835 OnePlus 5T for $391 off Amazon, Prime got it to me in literally 15hours...theres a headphone jack. amoled display. great camera. and I love the "stock android+" oxygen OS. also getting two days of battery no problem. use instagram and twitter alot. sending emails. moving files around google drive and sending to clients all day. besides the lack of a good tempered glass protector this was an amazing deal. I dont think ive missed out on the Pixel 3a even though i would appreciate the slightly smaller display and well....having a pixel.
I think it's more of a return to the original *Moto X* rather than nexus...
💁🏻♂️💁🏻♂️
Or the fantastic Moto G, which was the absolutely best value at its time.
@@elimalinsky7069 Yeah that's my point... Nexus was a flagship, this isn't.
Midrangers rock! Glad they are finally making a comeback in the US.
By now I just wonder how bad the hardware will turn out to be.
Really good to see Google resetting phone prices to this area with a great phone. Stock Android, updates, that camera...id seriously consider this over a full Pixel, especially when buying a sim only deal and a handset.
I'd still take the galaxy S9 for just a tiny bit more. Nevertheless this looks like a fair deal.
@@yv9876 What about 10e?
Affordable, stock android and good after sales support with the advantage of having a small screen, well well well its a win win.
All the new flagships are just crossing the 6" screen size, manufacturers have started to forget that the human palm size is still the same over the years, there's no upgrade in this department.
My god... Snapdragon 670 and 3000mah on a 400$ device? I bought a Xiaomi Mi9 with Snapdragon 855 for 360$ ...
Alex Nannos
xiaomi’s business model is based on very low profit margins which means they can afford to put in top specs in their phone and sell the phone for not much more than the cost of all the components.
Edit: spelling
@@dvo5808 I understand but I am a consumer looking for the best possible product on my desired price range so I don't understand why someone would spend 400$ on a midrange phone when you can easily find high end specs on the same budget and call it a good purchase!
Alex Nannos
completely understandable, another thing to consider is software support - you aren’t just paying for the hardware, you’re paying for the excellent camera and operating system software.
Alex Nannos I think you’re right on this one, didn’t know the difference was so minimal now.
Thanks for enlightening me, have a good one :)

What issue have there been? Genuine question, I've never had a Google brand phone and the 3 A XL seems pretty tempting
@@danlugo4365 the pixel 3 and 3xl suffer from RAM management issues Google can't seem to optimize Android pie to run on 4gb of ram apps force close mutiwindow issues. Can't keep apps in the background so when you switch to one from the background it reloads like you just opened it for the first time Some Apps on the 3xl don't utiize the full screen Bluetooth issues especially in the car. Sometimes it loses it's connection or just shuts Bluetooth off on it's own Google phones have always had issues with Bluetooth. But every other OEM doesn't seem to have an issue.

@@cryc0s only a better camera
If it kept the SD845 or greater, it would be a modern Nexus device and I'd be buying.
What annoys me with modern phones is the need to hide the front facing cam and sensors for small bezels has led to even dumber compromises. Dumb notches, pin holes and mechanical popup weak points. The 3A shows this isn't necessary.
Some new fancy camera work, MrMobile! What's the secret?
Sliders, Gimbals and stuff.

so is the 3A XL more like the 2XL than the 3XL in terms of form factor?

@@dephan2275 which Nexus? I used Nexus 5, my brother used Nexus 4 and then 5x. We did not face such problems.
In fact it only set a benchmark other phones aspired to reach, which OnePlus finally did.
Somehow reminded me of that old Top Gear episode, where they were discussing a car, which had this 'motto' - "it will change everything" and Jeremy Clarkson's reaction "I don't want to change EVERYTHING"
Bezel is from 2016, body is polycarbonate, new processor of lower midrange... Too much cutted corners for not so low price tag.
Pixel 3a should have been priced $300 and pixel 3a xl should have been priced $400.
Exactly, thing is this will sell. But it's coming at a strange time. Sammy has taken all the air out with the S10 line. Plus too many compromises to supposedly get to this price point.
To justify this price it needed a few changes. Wireless charge for one and if you're going put in a midrange SoC. For God's sake come out swinging with a 710. Not a lowly 670. This is going to have to be heavily discounted before I'll bite on this.
I feel bad for you Americans with your phone carriers controlling which phones are available where so heavily. It's really not like that in the UK
