I don't know how many times I've listened to this, but Mitch's voice and Mitch and Scott singing together still bring tears to my eyes. Tears of joy and deepest awe and appreciation. And your reaction did it to me again! Thank you so much for this! I love your reactions and analyses!
When I saw this reaction come up on my page, I had to listen. It's my first video of my day. I think I saw someone else mention this is a version of the song that Andrea Boccelli and Celine Dion performed. His part, of course, was the Italian. Mitch's voice is so clear and beautiful in this song. Happy Tuesday to me!
I first heard this on Celine Dion's album with Andrea Bocelli and I love that they sing in both english and italian. She did this song with Josh Groban as well and that one is sung the same way. I've always been a fan of the original and when I heard this one I was a little bummed that Scott didn't keep singing in italian but after listening to it all three versions are tied as my favorites.
Sorry, don't know if you have seen PENTATONIX THE RECORDING OF EVERGREEN, but in it you will see glimpses of how they put this together. Also, how they arrange, create stacking and layering, use body percussion, etc. Great video for music nerds.
And in the Evergreen video they are caught saying that "they'll never have to hire a choir again" as they did their own background voicing because time was short and things evolved within the song. I thought that was funny at the time and now hear their backing vocals throughout this song. Genius and so fun to pick out their various voices in different places in the song. Great reaction and agree you'd thoroughly enjoy the Making Of video.
Your facial expressions are just like mine! It's so easy to forget that Scott s a baritone, but he shows his chops here! I really appreciate your appreciate your appreciation of Matt. Yea, a lot of us are so disappointed that their record company didn't put this arrangement/song up for a Grammy on its own. You should really watch the brief documentary "The Recording of Evergreen" so see how they worked out the arrangement. Did you hear Kevin going up to the top falsetto note at the end?
I love the way they song this so much. Thank you for reacting to Pentatonix. They just released a new live version of "Hallelujah ". I hope you'll react to it.
Uhm, yeah, crescendo coming in 3-2-1 … The epic appearance of sunlight just happens to coincide, lol. There’s a great moment in the mini-doc, Recording Evergreen, where Kirstie is listening to the finished track for the first time and she’s just giddy with the result, as are they all. Although the documentary contains snippets of songs you may not have heard yet, I bet you would geek out at all the behind-the-scenes info about how they arrange and perform the songs. There’s also an extended scene on creating body percussion with Kevin leading the effort. Recording Evergreen is only about 20 minutes long, so it wouldn’t be an overly extended reaction. As always, I loved this reaction with you, so thanks! Peace … Sorry, I meant to add … Selfishly, I love the opening segment of this song with Mitch and Scott singing together. Shades of Superfruit!
If you want good modulation from PTX, watch their cover of Can you feel the love tonight if you haven’t already. They take it places you won’t expect. It’s worth reacting to.
The song was written by David Foster, Carole Bayer Sager, Tony Renis and Alberto Testa. The original version had Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli singing. There have been many other versions recorded as well.
Loved your reaction- and I knew that bridge section would blow your mind! 🤣 I get what you were saying about the expected key change, but that’s one of the many cool things about PTX; they’re very clever with their arrangements when it comes to dynamics. They create a true sense of motion throughout a song by getting softer or louder in places you wouldn’t expect, yet it sounds and feels just right. Genius level stuff! 🤘🏾
Since you aren't familiar with the song, a little history may be appropriate. The Prayer originally appeared in the 1998 animated movie, Quest for Camelot. Celine Dion sang the song in the English version of the movie: the song was sung by a mother watching her daughter leaving on a very dangerous journey, and praying for her safety. The song was a much shorter version in the movie - basically just the first verse that Mitch sang as his first solo in this version. The song in the movie was only about 90 seconds long, and even on the soundtrack only lasted about 2.5 minutes. Andrea Bocelli, Italian opera tenor, sang the song in the Italian version of the movie. This is why Scott was singing in Italian when he began the song, as a tribute to Bocelli's version. Dion and Bocelli made a duet of the song which appeared on both of their next studio albums, and their duet is the most famous version of the song. The song won a Golden Globe, and was nominated for both a Grammy and an Oscar the next year. The two biggest differences between the PTX version and the Dion/Bocelli duet are that D/B had a full orchestra backing them, and that in the PTX version, the soprano part was sung by Mitch Grassi. PTX has said that in the studio version, they multi-tracked voices for the backing vocals, but there are a number of videos (including one from a TV appearance on The Morning Show) where they sing the song simply as a quintet, and the difference is really only noticeable if you're listening for it.
The chord progression, as you call it, is known as an Aeolian Cadence. You find these anywhere from Beethoven to Disney movies. Sounds awesome, and in this song it fits perfectly! You mentioned you'll be checking out O Holy Night. I look foward to it.
Well I just went down a giant rabbit hole regarding the "Aeolian cadence". 😂 It's not a term that is recognized in formal music education so I had never heard of it before. It's a very interesting topic!
They are just different than any other group out there. After Mitch's first verse the rest of the song was a series of duets. When they hit that climax at about three minutes into the video they sound like a pipe organ. Just stunningly beautiful. The harmonics are just unreal. This came off the 2021 Christmas album Evergreen. The album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Album. We were kind of disappointed this song in particular was not nominated for Best Song or Best Arrangement. Matt needs his Grammy!
David Foster wrote this song for Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, so yes, it is Italian that Scott sings. Foster introduces the two who sing it in a concert in Central Park in 2011 (also avail. on yt)
The first time I heard this was when it was released in October of 2021. I listened to it with tears running down my face about 20 times in a row. I became an instant Pentaholic in that moment, and I have listened to their music pretty much daily ever since. This is a perfect masterpiece and it is such a HUGE SHAME that it did not earn them another Grammy. This one, Amazing Grace and O Holy Night all produce the mind-blown, jaw-on-the-floor, full body chills and tears of joy effects imo. Let’s face it, everything they do is out of this world!! 😇👽😇👽😇👽😇👽😇👽💜💜💜💜💜
Every time I hear this song, from this group or Celine Dion and Josh Groban, I get goose bumps all the way through it! It's the fabulous song writing of David Foster.
I always love your reactions! I just checked your PTX playlist and I don’t see O Holy Night. I may have missed it. The Prayer was my favorite Pentatonix song (although I like them all) until O Holy Night. I think O Holy Night is Grammy worthy! Please react to it 🙏. It’s amazing. Not just for Christmas. Although we are getting into that season….
Oh, I get why you didn't know it was Italian right at the jump, because you aren't familiar with the song! One of the most famous versions is Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, who, as you likely know, is an Italian opera singer. This arrangement and the incredible performances of all the vocalists is simply masterful. I can't remember the reason why it happened this way, but the album this was on was nominated for a Grammy, but the song itself was not. I can't imagine the song losing if it was up for consideration as a stand alone. I loved your enthusiastic reaction! I knew you'd love it!
@@ShawkaReacts "The Prayer" is one of Celine Dion's biggest hits. The trio of Whitney, Mariah and Celine dominated the pop charts in the late 80s and through the 90s.
This is my anti anxiety song, when I am really going through it and I need something to reroute my thoughts, this is what does it for me. This brings me out of every moment of panic or fear and makes me feel peaceful. They should’ve won a Grammy for this, but I’ve heard it wasn’t entered in time or something like that.
The album was nominated for a Grammy, based on this and several other tracks, but RCA didn't submit this for consideration as an individual performance.
I believe The Prayer was recorded by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli (he singing the Italian portion), and became pretty famous. I think maybe Josh Groban also recorded it? Thank you so much for sharing your reaction! I absolutely loved watching you react to this beautiful cover, as well as learning the aspects of it that touched you! I was right there with you! Thanks again.
There's no chord progression in the original recording of this song initially recorded by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. So I'm pretty sure that's why they did not insert a chord progression in the song where you desired it to be. But yes, a good chord progression would have worked in that spot, or not.
Thanks for the reaction. PTX just dropped a new video, .They redid Hallelujah live with upgrades. Check it out. If u have not done so, react to O Holy Night and Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here
They are singing the song like Celine and Andrea did it and it sounds great. PS: "The Greatest Love of All" sounds way better by George Benson, in my opinion.
I'm STILL upset that they didn't get some kind of award for this!!!!!!!!!
I don't know how many times I've listened to this, but Mitch's voice and Mitch and Scott singing together still bring tears to my eyes. Tears of joy and deepest awe and appreciation. And your reaction did it to me again! Thank you so much for this! I love your reactions and analyses!
Wow, thank you!
Mitch's voice brings me to tears every time I hear him. He has the voice of an angel.
Scott is singing Italian. Stunning right!! Great reaction ❤
PLEASE CHECK OUT THEIR VERSION OF OH HOLY NIGHT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AAA
Coming out this December!
You should hear their mashup of Pure Imagination and Christmas Time is Here. Heaven!

And I'm just gonna casually drop here that Mitch out sings Celine here. I said what I said.

Excellent suggestion! Him being a music nerd would definitely enjoy watching that .
Yes, and don’t be afraid to react to it because you think it might be too long. Trust me we’ll watch it with you. Many reactors have done it too.
Double suggest this. Pentaholics will watch it to see your fun reaction. 16 minutes of the behind the scenes process

If you want a truly epic ptx key change you should check out Can You Feel The Love Tonight. It's one of my favorites and it really showcases Kirsty
Love that key change in Can You Feel the Love Tonight!

Scott was singing in Italian. He's singing the Andrea Bocelli part.
Incredible. Gives me chills, and that last note is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

Yep. Never had heard this before. Definitely glad we checked it out!
Celine also did it with Josh Groban. Simply gorgeous! But as in so many, the PTX version will always be my go to!
@@ShawkaReacts "The Prayer" is one of Celine Dion's biggest hits. The trio of Whitney, Mariah and Celine dominated the pop charts in the late 80s and through the 90s.
It was actually written specifically for Celine and Andrea. It is explained in one of their videos from Central Park.
I love how much you loved this! Great song, great reaction!

Watched/listen to this such a lot, always up for more. TX This is absolutely stunning. Tx. Greetings from South Africa

Love this one and scott is singing in Italian ❤

Recommend their cover of Mad World.
Perfect reaction. Love your comments. Just one quastion-how you define head voice for an alto soprano singer?
Head voice/chest voice breaks are different for every individual.
You're actually the first person I have heard saying they wished there was a modulation. Agree to disagree. ✌🏼
Appreciate your civility!
Italian
It's Italian:) listen to Celine Dion and Andrea Bocellis version... psst... ptx did it better
Thanks for the reaction. PTX just dropped a new video, .They redid Hallelujah live with upgrades. Check it out.
If u have not done so, react to O Holy Night and Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here
They are on the list for December 😁
Have you checked out Home Free and Voiceplay are both amazing Acapella groups
Lots of reactions for both groups. Feel free to check out their playlists!
And to think, they didn't win a Grammy for this, never has there been such a travesty of justice in the music industry.
They are singing the song like Celine and Andrea did it and it sounds great. PS: "The Greatest Love of All" sounds way better by George Benson, in my opinion.
Yeah it’s Italian seeing as Mitch is part Italian
Really? I did not know that!
Italian.
A modulation where you wanted it would be predictable, cheesy, and a bit corny. PTX got it right.
Italian.
