Consider opening up the side of a feed sack and flattening it opened out on the ground beside the box, turn the whole box on its side instead of ripping it. Pull the flat bag up against the base to catch the soil and potatoes as you loosen the soil from the root mass. After removing your new potatoes, you can right the box and replace the plant and the soil that are on the bag into it to finish growing the remaining tuber buds. The boxes can be used for a different succession crop after potatoes are finished for the year, or fill with layers of materials to compost into new soil, or pull the diagonal corners of the empty box to flatten and store till next season. Flattened opened out boxes also make good weed block and can be covered with composting layers or mulch, and will pretty much get eaten and tilled by earthworms by next spring.
THANK YOU for sharing this great information .
I live way up on a mountain in Tn with no yard and 3 small raised beds. I will be doing this next year for sure. I moved last fall, so have a ton of boxes in the basement. I’m surrounded by forests so have a ton of leaves. I will place the boxes on the south side of the house, it’s the only area that has sun anyway. Thanks so much for doing this!!
So GREAT to Hear. THANK YOU.
That's a good plan! You can use all sorts of things for plant containers; those cardboard boxes will serve you well. Also try dog food or chicken feed bags, whatever you've got. I've seen people grow food in cloth Walmart shopping bags, because they're cheap. They might only last a couple years but it would still be worthwhile.
I AM ORGANIC GARDENING has several excellent videos on different kinds of raised beds too, check them out. :)
WOW I am surprised u got that many for an early harvest bot I never grew potatoes! I am that newbie to POTATOE gardening! I can't wait to see what u get in the harvest after the stalks die out!👍 I will be sure to keep an eye out for that!👌GOD BLESS ALL THE GARDENERS🙏🙏🙏
Several years ago I did not thoroughly go through my potato area in my garden. For two years afterwards I had potatoes growing. I didn’t have to plant more potatoes for the year. I’m pretty sure on year three they’re still going to be potatoes growing in that area. It’s hard to find all the baby potatoes that don’t develop fully. I just make sure I mark off the area that I have potatoes planted and do not plan anything else in that area. I do add compost and mulch for the next growing season.
I pulled 25 pounds of potatoes out of my grow bag this morning, yukon golds, this is my favorite way to grow them. Thank you for your videos, I have learned so much from you.
That is awesome! THANK YOU so much for sharing.
Thank you for sacrificing a box, was just showing our neighbor the garden and we were wishing we could see what is going on inside the boxes! We have 3 cardboards boxes, 2 plastic tubs and one cloth bag, one small sweet potato plot. I’m praying we have success. Thoroughly enjoying your channel and gleaning as much information as I can to expand my own knowledge and expand our garden.
Very glad to hear. THANK YOU. Always here to help each other.
I really appreciate that you show people how to grow food in a fairly simple and very inexpensive manner.
We have some potato plants growing now in the same style as your cardboard boxes, but we used old dog food bags instead. We just poked holes in the bottom for drainage and followed the same procedure you showed. Haven't harvested any yet, but the plants seem to be growing nicely.
That is so GREAT to hear. Thanks.
I appreciate you taking the time off your farm to teach..I am in texas with a fairly large garden and am going to cover crop this fall..God Bless
Thanks Mark, it’s nice to see your potato harvest.
So nice of you to say. Have a great week ahead. THANK YOU.
Can u replant the plants pulled with root and new potato starts will they take and keep growing
Most likely not. Sorry
Oh WOW! I’ve never seen this before, ever! I sure hope mine are doing that good…That’s wonderful!!
Just make sure they get 1 inch water per week. Thanks
It's so good to see you harvest some of these, as I just watched your video where you planted them. Potatoes the perfect food, yet so maligned. It's hard to get good potatoes in the store, so I might try this way of planting. I opened a bag of potatoes from my store and they were small, green, and a bit sprouted. I check with Mr You Tube, and it turns out that it's ok to plant green potatoes. Who knew. They're about ready to plant, and we are just coming to the end of our freezing time. I'm very old and have limited recources. Not sure where I'd get the soil. Have you ever heard of planting in a bag of soil mix that you bring home from the nursery or from the local public compost pile? I've saved a lot of boxes, so either way, I'm going to try it. I definitely subscribed! Thank you.
Local compost would be best for you.. Enjoy planting
They look really good, and a nice size. I grew purple potatoes last year and was so happy they did so well. Most grew larger than the ones I planted. Growing them again this year in my boxes. Thanks for sharing your results.
THANK YOU so very much for sharing.
Just found your channel, and your potato-in-box video series. It's just about time for me to plant this year's potato crop, and I'm definitely going to give this method a try! I'll plant some in-ground, some in plastic containers, and some in boxes, all the same variety and planting date, so I can compare methods. I think the boxes may be helpful in managing moisture, as I typically have too much rain during early Spring for potatoes, and they struggle with the excess.
That will be a great test to see and learn from. THANK YOU
Here we have iguanas eating the leaves....thank you for the video🤩
I don't know if you had used organic potatoes to begin with, but if a person hadn't used organic potatoes, planting and raising the potatoes the way you did ,would that make them organic? Thanks so much for your videos. God bless you and your sons.
Yes, they would be organic raised. The seed potatoes does not have to be organic to start with.
I definitely want to do this!!
Great to hear. Thanks
Hi from Maine, Dad's way of celebrating 4th of July was to have new potatoes and early peas from his garden.
Yummy. Thanks
11 potatoes from 2 is a good return on your investment. I got my potatoes in a little late this year so I have a few more weeks before checking for an early harvest. I hope the hail storms aren't too bad
This is again a crazy year for weather. so much rain and cold temps. How the fields are dry and the lawn is brown.
I will be flipping over one of my potato containers this week in hopes of fresh spuds for the holiday weekend. I hope the harvest is as bountiful as yours.
Thanks for the update, Mark!
Sounds great! Enjoy the great taste of them. Thanks.
Hi, 🙋🏼♀️ I'm Di. [Diana]
Amazing! I've not seen this b4. So excited to grow my own potatoes. I really hope I can do it too. Thank You so much for showing me how. 🕊❤🙏
You can Do It. I believe in you. Enjoy. and Thank You
Thank you for this little mini series on growing these potatoes! What a fantastic idea! Looking forward to trying this out!
Hope you enjoy trying it. THANKS
What brilliant video, such a simple idea.👍
This is great! I'm actually going to plant Red potatoes today!
Enjoy, Thy will be GREAT,
How do you replant to have more potatoes. I tried last yr and glad I found your video
Once you harvest you have to wait until next year again. They is a early harvest and late harvest
Worked nice, I did something similar last year as an experiment. took a pallet and cut it in half and covered the inside with cardboard. Worked very well. I'm expanding on it this year so it can be taken apart and reused next year. If you do this make sure you use pallets that are marked HT which means heat treated versus being chemically treated.
Great idea, THANK YOU so very much for sharing this. Enjoy
Wow, I love this method of growing potatoes! I've never even considered the thought of growing anything in cardboard boxes! Great video!
THANK YOU so very much. Have a great week ahead
Absolutely amazing! Can't wait to see the main crop!
Great to hear. Thanks
This is amazing! Incredible result for so early harvest… Early harvest of very young potatoes is my reason for growing potatoes at home. You can buy a bag of potatoes at any shop, but the young baby ones, with very very thin skin (if any) - they taste the best!! You cannot get them from shops… I planted my shop bought potatoes two weeks ago, in pots, now watching your video - I will try your method in free cardboard boxes next time! 👍
Wonderful! And YES those baby potatoes are the best. THANK YOU.
Is there a further video of you collecting the later crop. This has been a fascinating watch. Thank you.
YES, here it is : ruclips.net/video/7Sb0-aselGg/видео.html
Great video ten potatoes out of two not bad thanks for sharing
Nature is awesome to work with. Thanks
Loved seeing the early update, I have some store bought potatoes growing in my leaf mold pile. I will have to check on them this weekend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us
So nice of you to say. Here is to your great harvest. THANK YOU.
i have been trying to grow potatoes for 3 to 4 years but they didnt bloom, now i have my answer thank u so much,,and my potatoes grows very well
Great to hear, Thanks
Wow I am so happy to see how it has turned out lovely potatoes
Great to hear, THANK YOU.
Super!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey, we get those same boxes every month for my son’s supplies. They are so sturdy, I keep them on hand! I’ve been watching and taking notes. Feeling well informed and confident, going to give this method a try with some red potatoes I forgot in a low cupboard.
That is awesome! It is so easy too do, Happy Gardening You do not want to plant potatoes with long sprouts of one inch
Thanks! Good Job!
THANK YOU.
Thank you so much!!!
And THANK YOU so very much.
Thanks Mark. I missed first Videos.
Curious did the Box still have a Bottom or just the 4 sides.
Reason for question ⁉️
Curious if it was able to "Tie Into" surrounding Soil food web - network
I folded both the top and the bottom box flaps inward. So bottom was open to the soil and leaves below.
That was a great harvest. Gonna try it maybe for fall potatoes. Thanks for a great video
That sounds like a great plan. THANK YOU.
Masha Allah very nice very hard worker
THANK YOU so very much.
Wow i’m going to try this. I’d fill it with soil because i’d hope more soil =more spuds !
Yes. Enjoy.
Hey! Where did your hoops go?
What zone you are. When did you plant them, when is the best time to plant them. I am in zone 7. I love your video. Thank you 0:26 0:26
I am zone 6 b new jersey. Planted mid April. Just ask google when to plant in zone 7 n enter your city and state also. Enjoy and THANKS
Wow, thank you Mark for sharing this method. Will for sure try it next year.
Have fun! It is so easy. THANKS
After removing the early harvest, do you have a link on how to continue growing rest of small potatoes once the box is removed?
I had put purple potatoes in the box with more mulch than soil and ended up putting red and gold small potatoes that were going soft and full of eyes next to the box and covered them with dry mature grass that had gone to seed after snapping the seed heads off. Am I planting in straw? Or hay?
Not gonna attempt an early harvest - The plansts are blooming but much smaller. Shaded by sunflowers growing close on the west side and I have a long way to go in building my soil in a no till area which is most of the growing area of the yard.
Great looking soil.
Hope all is well. And THANK YOU always.
Great job!!!
Thank You kindly.
Nice harvest 🥔
THANK YOU so very much.
Hi great video. I'm excited to start my boxes. I'm in Northern Illinois. When do you think I should plant? I've never done this before.
In general, when there hasn't been a frost for two weeks, you are SAFE to plant your potatoes outside in Illinois
Awesome!
Fabulous thanks ☺️
Awesome, THANK YOU.
That is cool.
THANK YOU kindly.
Thanks for making this video! It was very informative. I plan on doing it this spring. A question and observation. Could I use aged wood chips or straw instead of leaf mold? Also would it be beneficial to pile up mulch around the boxes to help keep moisture in?
Hi, you can use straw. Place enough to block out lite so the potatoes will not turn green. Your choice about outside mulch. You know your garden better than I do. Happy Planting.
Not bad at for an early harvest.
THANK YOU kindly.
I’m a bit confused. Do you leave the small potatoes in the box for the rest of them to finish growing? Oops. I just read someone’s remark on how to finish growing the rest of the potatoes. These potatoes are starting to sound like chives….the gift that keeps on giving. Lol
Does the layering of leaves around the boxes keep weeds and grass from growning?
Thx,
DS
Yes, Leaves are a great mulch.
How do you store the potatoes? 🥔 Do you have to cure them?
From your intro video, if I cut one larger potato in half for planting, should I dip the cut side in anything to help it grow a scab?
It will scab itself in 48 hrs, then plant. Thanks
Did u re plant that original , early harvest plant.
I do not, it really will not do well.
Hi Mark, would those tiny potatoes have actually grown much bigger if you'd left the plant in the soil till the foliage had died right back? Thought that was unlikely.
Yes. All the potatoes would have grown bigger it left until the foliage died back
@@iamorganicgardening good to know, thanks
😀🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱😀 Thanks you
Welcome 😊
That Coyote looks healthy and beautiful. He's not stalking you I would say hes watching you for his own safety😮. But he's hunting small animals.
I fully agree with you. Thanks
Thank you for opening the box early, can i use peatmoss instead of leaves?
Yes you can. BUT it Dries out 3 times as fast so you need to water more. Plus there is no nutrients in it.
What if I don't have dried leaves? What can I use? Straw? Ideas? Thx!
You can use more soil or straw
Hi Mark, I'm a recent subscriber to your channel and enjoy your advice on organic gardening. I was looking through videos of you from 4 years ago and I didn't recognise you. I hope you don't mind me saying that... the organic gardening must be having a good impact. My partner is trying to loose weight and it's an ongoing struggle. We are trying to eat as much organic foods but its Not easy with our climate and organic food is pretty expensive. I wondered if you had any tips which helped you?
I lost 100 lbs in one year by drinking lots of cold water per day up to 1 1/2 gallons . Stop sugars or fake sugars usage. Stevia is OK to use. Organic food is better due to it has more pure vitamins and stops your cravings . YOU CAN DO IT. Enjoy
@@iamorganicgardening wow! I worked out that's over 7 stone in one year. Congratulations on your success and hard work.😁 It's good to hear of someone managing to lose so much weight, makes me feel alot more positive, that it is possible to do. Thanks for sharing, it's a real moral booster. 😃🤩
Well done Mark. Your laboured breathing in the video was quite heavy so good on you. God bless
Can you rebury to let the baby ones continue to grow
It is always worth a try. Enjoy.
Do I leave the potato netting on just till I top off the soil the second time or longer?
Thanks for asking.. Leave on until Harvest, Thanks
Can you replant those plant that you pulled up and let them continue to produce potatoes?
No , not really.
@@iamorganicgardening Thank you for your reply.
Could we have just put the plant back in another box for the tiny potatoes to keep growing?
You have very small chance for it to regrow. Potatoes very much dislike their roots moved
Could you 're-plant' those 2 potatoes plants to grow additional potatoes?
@@iamorganicgardening This answer doesn't make sense. Can you replant the 2 plants that you dug up So it will continue growing? I'm so excited to try this. I enjoy your channel very much.
you can but the success rate isnt very high - you have to be very careful when you harvest the early potatoes so you don't damage the parent plant. You're better off just planting a new potato
@@47retta I read the question to quickly and made a mistake, I though it was 2 potatoes, not potatoes plants.
Ive always heard you must lay out potatoes in the sun for a few days....its that something you also do?
Do not wash them right after harvest
You are my favorite subscribe. I’d like more videos LOL ofcourse
What did you do with the tiny potatoes?
I ate them , YUMM
How do you measure an inch of water
Take the same size box you used and place a large plastic bag in it to go against all 4 walls and fill it with a inch of water. Then keep that memory in mind when you water that box.
What zone are you in?
Zone 6B New Jersey
Red Norland?
Not sure, they where store bought with just the name red potatoes, THANKS
I know you got an early harvest with 70 days. What’s the full harvest total in days 120 days. Just wondering?
Red potatoes, the ones I grew are always a short growing time. I did not plant ones that are 120 days.
@iamorganicgardening Thank you for letting me know.
I remove the flowers so the plants can put energy to growing bigger potatoes. I had a ton of chicken wire, so I made a cage around the strongest cardboard boxes I could find. They last longer than one planting.
That's a great idea!
My box DID NOT Survive ON 1side? I keep putting it back up....is that okay?
100% OK. Enjoy.
Carry bear spray or pepper spray in case the coyote appears to come towards you. Don't let him bully you. 😤
Good idea, Thanks
Can you plant sweet potato in a box also?
Yes, just one slip per box in the middle
Thank you!
You're welcome! Enjoy your week forward.
In October of 2022 I raked up 30 garbage cans of leaves, didn't shred them, put them in a ten by five sq.ft. area on my front lawn. In spring I dethatched lawn and put ten or so garbage cans on top of leaves. In May I planted eight tomato plants, seven potato cuttings and a couple cucumber plants. It's now end of August I have gotten a number of cukes, one ten inches long, the potato tops are huge and I have about fifty big heirloom tomatoes starting to ripen . I used no fertilizer, just leaves and lawn thatch, my neighbor asked where did you get the soil for this? I said remember all of your leaves you let me rake? It's amazing, it worked just like you said, so great to experience, thank you for telling everyone about this.
So great to Hear. Thanks for letting me know and other gardeners too. Your the BEST.
