First performed with the operetta "Candide" on December 1, 1957, this overture has always been well received and has become a popular curtain-raiser. Brilliantly scored, it has a certain type of vitality that is not easy to match. Stated to have been one of Bernstein's most cherished works, the Candide Overture has been performed hundreds of times by a myriad of orchestras and today still creates excitement as it did more than fifty years ago.
