  • This not the correct way to install these but I just needed something to get through mud season. I tossed these right on top of boot sucking mud with the only ground prep being flattening out the slop with the tractor.
I'll do a follow up video this summer when things dry out and I can pick them all back up, level the area and build up low spots with gravel.

I have found the mud mats were great if I put them down on top of drain rock after removing the mud to hard pan and that provided a long term solution. Removing poop and uneaten hay regularly helps to keep the area from returning to being mucky. I use an aluminum circle designed for a fire pit to feed hay inside of and that keeps the horses from spreading hay everywhere and then pooping on it, it is much more affordable than a hay feeder ( rings are only $40.00 at tractor supply) and allows them to eat off the ground which is good for dental wearing. Also getting the horses off the area after a heavy rain and raking it so it drains, this also lets their feet dry out.... This year I am also going to try to redirect the water out of each field to the french drain with landscaping bricks under the fence line and am considering used carpet remnants over the rocks since we are replacing carpeting so I can protect their feet when the rain season makes them soft and more vulnerable to bruising.

A thick layer of pine pellets. Can buy them by the ton at tractor supply. It’s not cheap ($250 a ton) but after a few layers it would be a perfect fix.

This video is a year old, do you have any updates for the mud mats? I’m thinking about getting some for my farm that is very sloppy clay mud. Thank you!

Has anyone ever tried sheets of used modern carpet under these as a stabilizer? of (instead of buying geotek). I want to try that with these in my small run-in paddocks around the water trough, by the doorways, and at every paddock gate.

Can this be driven over like for a driveway?

Good morning; when harrowing a pasture, do you have to avoid the grids? Seems likely but thought I'd confirm in case some kind of sorcery makes it a non issue ;)

Nope. I drop a bucket or blade right on them and treat them just as if they were a concrete pad.

I wonder how they perform on sloped ground or a hill..

Depending on how steep your slope is, you’ll want a topper as they can get slick. One of the favorites from customers are the cheep holed drainage mats. They give good traction.

There are some important differences between the Mud Grids shown in the video and similar products. With the Mud Grids, you don't have to prep the ground or add additional footing. You can just put them down right on top of the mud. Also, the Mud Grids can be picked up and moved over time. Very convenient. Other products are more of a permanent install.

@@clay7032 Exactly. Mudcontrol mats are not like anything I've ever found. Solid, no prep and totally removable.

    How is it now?

Fabulous. It's at the bottom of a hill so mother. Ature dumps sand on them after every big storm. I use the back blade to clean them off. Live changing product.
