  • Brits in a bog! We went swimming in a bog in Soomaa National Park Estonia! Plus hiking & kayaking
    Would you go swimming in a bog?
    Swimming in a bog seems to be the norm for most Estonians but for us we had no idea that swimming in a bog was even a thing, did you?
    So as we were exploring Estonia all summer we figured we'd head over to Soomaa National Park to check out some board walks and visit our first ever Estonian bog! We started the day off with the beaver trail which although full of Beaver dams you're unlikely to actually see any beavers as they’re pretty shy, but there were tons of teeny tiny cute frogs!
    We then made our way to our second hike in Sooma National Park which was a 5km boardwalk along the Riisa study trail where we found lots of nature including lizards! Who knew there were lizards in the Baltics? Made Craig very happy, he loves them :) and we also found the perfect bog to go swimming in! Although the water looks brown and murky it's just organic matter and is really clean for swimming in and you can even drink it - apparently! Although it does look like we jumped into a bowl of Coca cola :)
    Bogs like the one we swam in are created over hundreds or thousands of years, they form when plants decay in a lake and fill it. Spending a summers day out in nature exploring and swimming in these waters allowed us to really embrace Estonian summertime and see how the locals spend their summer days enjoying this unique and beautiful landscape.

    Join us next time as we head over to Valga the town that spans the two countries Estonia & Latvia. We also check out Sangaste Castle and finish the day in Otepää. Soomaa is actually most famous for it's Spring time flooding as the snow melts. Then you can do canoeing in the flooded forests between trees and there are quite many houses in the water up to second floor at times and you can paddle in someone's back yard so to say. It's very cool.

    Visited there in 2014, one of the wooden trails is suitable for wheelchair users as well, and I was able to see many of the same plants. Estonians certainly have a different way of appreciating nature.

    Seems like such a great and peaceful hike love that it's made with all the slabs of wood. The color of the big water was interesting not sure if I would just in haha. But I loved the drone shots of the park and bog, were the batteries dead for kayaking or did you not want to risk bringing the drone in the 🛶? Seemed like it would have been awesome sunset shots of the river.

    • @TideKnotTravellers
      @TideKnotTravellers  3 года назад

      DjusLife the bog is full of plant minerals which give it that colour🙂normally we would have got the aerial shots in the kayak but this one wasn’t like the rowing boat where we could safely land the drone, this one was like a sports kayak that tips up and is wet inside so we put all our stuff in the pink dry back and couldn’t fly the drone. It was a beautiful sunset on the river though☺️
