      They truly are astronomical. They're double the rate at my local garden center which has 99.73% pure seed and 85% germination, and the mix is specifically formulated for my area of the state. It's also in-line with the recommended mix from my local extension office.

    Just got my 3 bags of Jonathan Green Black Beauty Ultra today to over seed my front yard. I have mostly KBG and want to get some TTTF mixed in to get better rooting and drought tolerance. I also got tenacity to kill off the invasive grasses before I seed. Instead of core aeration I’m going to hit the front with RGS and AIR8. I just cored it a few weeks ago since we have been getting hammered by rain here in PA and the ground was soft. You guys and your videos! Now I’m obsessed with grass.

    I went pretty heavy handed with the Tenacity had zero issues with damage to turf. Yea it works slower killing weeds but the stuff is amazing. You are going to be glad you used it. Probably also wanna mention frequency of watering. Where I live the soil is extremely sandy so my timer is set to every six hours 10 minutes each watering. It's also still pretty hot where i live so thats another reason.

    Nice info on this video! I can vouch for the peat moss. Last fall with over seed, I had some bare spots to fix and topped those with peat moss. After about 1-2 weeks, I noticed that the areas covered with the peat were doing a lot better than other areas with just seed. I went to Lowes and picked up several more bags of the peat and top dressed the entire lawn. Please don't ask how much it cost, LOL. But, it was definitely worth it!

      @smokesgtp 6 лет назад

      @@ryanknorrlawncare yeah, certain types of fescue are going to whiten up in my experience. The white patches everywhere for a few weeks isn't ideal either. However, it's minimally toxic, yet it's very deadly to the yellow sedge and smooth crabgrass (and everything broadleaf) that is the predominant issue here in NY. Two applications at a medium strength knocked out 90% of a backyard neglected for decades that was at least half sedge and crabgrass. It did not kill the bentgrass infestation however. The scotts granular product is awesome too. Gives you a solid 4-6 weeks of pre-emergence for just about everything.

    We just bought a house in Athol, Idaho. I have about 1.5 acres that I want to make a nice lawn out of the almost 5 total acres. The problem i have is the grass or lack there of is mostly pasture land and weeds. I was thinking of using a 2,4 D product from North 40 or a local feed store. The ground is also hard as a rock. Should I do a soil loosening product first and then follow it up with something else a couple days after? Then overseed with a tall fescue or something that won't require alot of watering. Its hard to water the entire portion in a day.

    Hi Ryan - Great videos. Joe from CT here. We live in a new construction home and my builder put down Pennington Contractors mix which is Perennial & Annual Ryegrass. He put it down at the end of may and right now I've been mowing it but I really don't like the look or texture. There's tons of dirt patches here, very hard clay like soil and some areas have no grass at all. I want to start over but don't want to spend a ton. Should I try to do the complete overhaul as you have or just aerate, thatch, and rake? The goal is really to just have that dark green lawn. I want KBG but I feel that might be difficult to get it to spread through this ryegrass and i'll still have to mow. I plan to do "something" right around labor day, i just dont know what that full plan looks like yet. Again great videos!

    I started a new lawn recently. I removed the sod/thatch layer with down to bare soil, brought in quality topdressing, smoothed it out, used a quality fine fescue mix, and used a straw layer over the raked in seeds. I seeded first week in August (minnesota) Unfortunately, mostly only weeds came up (quackgrass, dandelions, purslane), with only patches of the the fine fescue, which isnt doing so well. I think some of the mistakes that I made were seeding too early (its been hot here for the last few weeks), and that the underlying seedbed of weeds needs to be killed. Im thinking of using a glyphosate mix like in your video to nuke the new lawn and start over. I have a few new trees I planted recently in the area. Can you think of any issues I should be aware of? Thanks

    Just bought a house and the yard needed some TLC. Raked up the bare spots (heavy clay) and dropped some seed and milorgamite. I still see some some seed and fertilizer on the top. Should I rake it back in? I laid this 6 days ago and don't want to mess with any germination that has already started. Seed type high fescue and Zoysia.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад

      If things are already germinating I'd probably leave it alone but if you can safely rake it again then that's fine too but you don't want to do more harm than good.

    Is it necessary to scalp a lawn every Spring? And how often should thatch be removed

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад

      I don't really scalp mine but do cut it shorter in the spring. Thatch just depends on how much it builds up and your grass type.

    Sadly, I have a Septic Tank in my Back Yard with Risers, for easy location for Pumping...
    As we all know, gases do excape from the Riser Lids, and harm the Grass, and allow Weeds to grow.
    What can I do to fix this?
    As I reside in Zone 8B (Olympic Peninsula of Washington State), what Grass Type would be the BEST for my 70% Full Sun/30% Partial-Full Shade Lawn?
    My 1/3 Acre gives me Approximately 7,500sqft of workable Lawnspace. I have a couple Flowerbeds in the Corners to make Mowing easier, and a Raised Vegetable Garden, a ~25' Dogwood Tree, and about 9 Thunderhead Flowering Plum Tree's (planted 2008).
    I've attempted to speak to local Professional Landscapers, but they just opt for Herbicides, that I don't want to use... I'm "trying" to go ALL ORGANIC, without financially going BROKE!
    Any recommendations are welcome!
    Thanks. 😎
    Take care,

      regarding your septic vents, I had the same in my yard. I cut mine down to below surface and capped each with 4" PVC cap with drilled holes for venting. Then dug a little around each and put in round utility/valve boxes - flush mount to the surface with the dark green landscaping lids. Looks so much better than before and I don't have to mow around them and trim. Just thought I would share that little project. (There may be something in local code here that prevents doing this since nobody else has done it - but I am not too concerned)

    Hello Ryan, Just got a new home and I’m excited to turn my backyard into spring/summer hot spot for my family. I not so recently placed down so Scott’s turf builder in my yard after mowing. I’d followed the instructions on the bag on how much to apply and I’ve been watering the seed twice a day for 3weeks but haven’t got one blade of grass to grow. What did I do wrong?

    Ryan - Do you recommend putting down Milorganite when overseeding, as well as starter fertalizer about a week later? In MA what kind of seed do you think would be best....I have heard that both Tall Fescue and Ryegrass work well.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад +1

      You can do milorganite at any time and usually I add starter fert just before grass should be germinating (depending on the type) when I overseed. What grass seed you use kind of all depends on what you want for looks. Check out some photos of bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue and see what you think.

      M&C Lawn Care I was thinking of using GCI’s tttf this year to overseed my bluegrass mix in my back yard to be more drought tolerant. It gets full sun and I don’t have an I ground irrigation. I used lesco tttf seed last year in my front yard and it came in great. Just wondering if Pete’s mix will be dark like the blue grass. I feel like the lesco tttf seed is a shade lighter than my blue grass. Have you used it and if so are the blades dark and not super broad? Thanks

    This is a great series, and timely because I am currently doing the same, to a more extreme level on heavily compacted soil overgrown bushes were and renovating what was left of the existing lawn... Wish was 70% wild violet and crab grass. I've looked it was with Glyphosate... But in the bare areas where Grass never grew and the soil is like concrete in going to till about 4 inches. Any thoughts on tiling? What's the best depth?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад

      I've tilled before but ran into a lot of weed problems. I think I probably would have let the weeds grow for a few weeks and then sprayed it and then seeded along with using tenacity. I don't know for sure the best depth but anything that breaks it all up and smooths it out should work.

    • @tonyflo04

    Love your videos Ryan. I live in your area and with the crazy hot spring or you can call it "no spring" we had this year my new sod (just go laid last year) has been looking terrible. I have some bare spots and a lot of brown spots. My lawn service (not going to mention their name) is recommending me to aerate and reseed this fall. They are charging me $245. Do you think that is too steep of a price? Just looking at this video I think I can do the reseed myself and maybe just have them aerate only. What are your thoughts?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

      I'm not really waiting on soil temp because it will be too late by the time things cool down. Heat is actually ok as long as I keep it watered.

  • @ThePlanBPill
    @ThePlanBPill 6 лет назад

    Do you think I would need to put a bunch of top soil down over the whole yard to get good results on a reseeding? I'm going to be core aerating. Should I just give the whole lawn a dusting of peat most? Its only 2k sq feet.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад +1

      If you're core aerating then just let the cores dry out and then break them up. That will be a decent amount of soil on top now and you can seed into that and cover with peat if you can.

      I'd say preferably I would dig it out and then add a little soil back in if you have to. That will give you great results on having the seed grow in nicely.

    Hi Ryan , my grass is dead , I’ve scalped it, right now I’m using my electric scarifier to break up the dry clay and my top soil is on it’s way . But I can’t decide whether to go with a rye grass/ fescue mix or KBG which is now available in the Uk. What’s your recommendation? I have clay soil but it doesn’t water log but it does get very dry in periods of no rain . I’m hoping to seed this weekend coming

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад

      It really all depends on what you like for looks. Bluegrass takes more water to keep it looking good when it's dry but at the same time it survives going dormant very well. I personally have never liked fescue as much as far as looks but there are some nicer varieties now too that I would consider it.

  • @dereksmith2951

    Are you going to work the ground prior to seeding? Doing a small renovation myself and wondering if I should work ground up prior to seeding or just throw it on over the dead grass.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад

      You can throw it over dead grass but the soil has to be soft enough to roll it in with a roller. I am adding soil over everything mainly in an effort to try to level the yard as much as possible.

    I'm planning on doing a core aeration this fall with an overseed. Do i need to start training my grass by cutting it lower? So the seed has good seed to soil contact? Should i Dethach right before my overseed. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  6 лет назад

      You can but sometimes if you shock it a little but cutting it lower all at once that's not so bad either since you let the new grass seed come in while the existing is lagging behind a little. The first few times I overseeded I was probably around 2.75 inches on the grass so it wasn't super short and it still worked fine. I would dethatch if you can. The more thinned out it is the more chance you have for new seed to find its way to the soil.
