When it happened I immediately said “fencing response”. And I went on to explain to my friends, parroting things I’ve learned on your channel. Keep it up Doc educating the average joe fan with every video.

Totally agree! Fencing response, ankle injuries and the ACL tear info have been very useful when watching sports with friends.
Same thing happened to me in real life when someone in my class fell off his chair banged his head on the floor and went into fencing response.
The disadvantages of football…. Makes me wonder what retired life is like on their bodies and injuries they’ve suffered throughout their careers on the field….. Injuries suck and I hope Budda is okay…. Wish him a Speedy Recovery…
Some players have retired in their prime because of the brutality of the game.
@@Lance37a yup thats pretty much why calvin johnson retired
@@jadendewar4694 Luke kueckly
IIRC Phil Simms can’t even throw the ball to his grandkids due to damage taken during his career. It varies from player to player and medicine has gotten better but it’s tough thing to deal with.

Jesus just told me he hasn't seen you at church in years........how can you be praying now?
This channel deserves much more attention. Respect this dedication to put out quality content and his GOD like speed to upload it.
It’s been growing pretty fast and imagine he will continue to. Definitely quality and educational content at lightening speed
I’m always intrigued with his videos. Wouldn’t be surprised if the networks start hiring analysts for these types of injuries the way they have rules analysts. This would be way more helpful and educational than Collinsworth speculating.
Thank you so much for explaining what happened so quickly! I was hoping you would upload about Baker's injury. Thanks again doc! ❤️

It’s pretty obvious what happened
as a Cardinals fan, i was hoping for him to be okay the second i saw the hit. but thanks to your videos i was able to recognize the fencing response and know that it was a concussion. it was scary but i'm glad he's okay. 🙂
That was scary indeed, prayers and a fast recovery for Bhudda.
I like how you mentioned that we should all start noticing the patterns…like the stiff arm.
These videos continue to provide us fans with such great abs immediate insights.
We are lucky to have ya!

I have just read the book on CTE, and it really shook me to the core over the deaths and how young two of the ex-players/players were.
What’s the book called I’d be interested to get a copy?
Watching it live (on TV) was able to (poorly I’m sure) regurgitate Dr Brian’s explanation of the fencing response from previous videos to people! Of course nobody cared, but I felt slightly smarter. Thanks Brian
Dude you’re so fast, and your analysis is always on point. Love this channel 👍🏼
Watching your channel is probably the only reason why I understood what was happening and what the injury could have possibly been. Thank you for the awesome content.
Thank you for posting this so soon after the injury! Great information. Thank you.👍
Once you follow Brian long enough it can become repetitive due to the frequency of injuries, but it's always informative. Love it
Thank you. I ‘knew’ it was a TBI for the stiff arm thing you’ve shared before (and where the hit was) and still the repetition is very helpful to solidify the info
Scary... immediately knew that this was likely a concussion based on the arm's "fencing" as you've taught us.
Thanks for being a great professor, Doc Brian!!
Who knows, there might be a moment where one of your many subscribers applies what is learned here in an emergency.... invaluable info for sure!!
Thanks!
Thanks, doc! You’re a great teacher. I caught the fencing in real time while watching the game.
That was an excellent presentation on concussions and how to deal with them and prevent it. Keep up the great work.
Always a pro, appreciate the quick upload!
Happy to extend the conversation about the Fencing Response... as my research team described the posturing back in 2009. Thank you for sharing the message and promoting prompt medical care.
Awesome work Doc
Wow, just got home from the game and you already have a pro video and analysis. Nice work.
Thank you doctor... your insights and greatly appreciated
Thanks Doc. Awesome lesson.
As always a excellent video
When I saw this you and Dr.Mike are the first two people that popped in my head
You be on it Dr 👍
I wonder if the Cardinals players watch these videos of yours.
Great work as always.
Prayers for Baker.
I instantly recognized that response because of these videos. I hope he's ok.
So terrifying. I'm glad he's recovering well. Bless him.
Good info.
Great job!

Great video
Brian, I’m a physiology student, and I cannot tell you enough how great your videos have been for reviewing my own knowledge and learning more applicable examples of sports medicine
Yep I knew immediately and was happy to see the player are being educated on it by their response after that hit.
You truly are one intelligent man 🔥🔥🔥
Not many people know about the fencing response. It’s scary to see! I told my dad about how serious that hit was and he had no idea
Thanks 🙏🏿 for your video! I pray Budda is okay.
I wish you were my doctor. I had so many sports injuries and can only jump off one leg today. Thanks for all the relevant info you share with your fans. God bless every athlete that sacrifices their body for a paycheck or to chase a legacy
Brian, would you consider doing an older injury? I would love to see you break down Mike Utley, Reggie Brown, and/or Donald Driver. AMAZING channel. Thanx for all you do.
I think this video and more of his videos should be shown to the NFL players in meetings as a form of how the players can protect themselves from possible paralysis.

BAd hit and as I watched the game and seen the arm I knew he was done, Thanks Dr. Sutterer for teaching us this.
Great video Brian! Let's pray he isn't the next Inky Johnson
Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy hope everything goes smoothly 🙏🏽🙏🏽
when you said, " you should recognize this as.." I yelled "A FENCING RESPONSE!!!" haha
Prayers up for tua 🙏🏽
Can you do a story on Elliot's torn PCL and how he played through an injury like that? Thanks for your videos!
Please keep us updated on Buddas injury, thanks
its always bad when their arms lock up
Having watched this channel when I saw this play happen I immediately saw the symptoms the doctor is speaking of.
Could you do a quick video on Draymond Green? I’m confused on how he went from having a calf problem to it being changed to a spinal disc injury
I remembered when you showed the baby in reference to the fencing response
Not sure where to post this but could you do a video on how someone can come back from an Achilles injury as fast as Cam Akers did?
I noticed the 'fencing response' right away from watching the Doc!
Hope Budda will be fine. All the best for him and fast recovery Budda!
Was watching and instantly saw the fencing position and remembered you
Ya it’s unfortunate on both sides. Defensively, he displayed poor tackling technique, leaving his feet and aiming with the head. On the flip side, there should be further discussion on offensive players (particularly running backs) lowering their heads to gain an extra few yards. Wouldn’t be surprised if the NFL in the near future started giving out offensive penalties to reduce situations like this.
There has been much discussion on why it’s fair for offensive players to use their heads “as a weapon”, yet defensive players can’t. Much life stiff arming, if defensive players touch the face mask it’s an automatic unnecessary roughness, yet offensive players can “stiff arm” opponents in the face mask no problem.
Honestly, can’t blame the offensive player. Budda led with his head and put his face down, not allowing is neck to bend backwards. If he led with his shoulder it would have been fine.
Pro sports means that Dr. Sutterer will never lack for content! Wishing Budda the best that injury looked scary live.
Hello dr!
Do you have a video example of the lifting technique to get someone on a backboard? As a former RN, I've only ever learned the log roll technique.
I'm curious to see it, not because I don't believe you, I just enjoy learning. Thanks!!
Paramedic here. You can RUclips it, but it's fairly easy. Multiple people on each side with the one on the head in command. Grab and lift directly up as you slide a board under, then let down.
It is much easier to do because the pt is on the ground instead of hip level
@@johnmartin476 thank you! I'll try to find one.
The key is to just lift high enough to get the backboard underneath the person. The lead on the head is responsible to make sure everyone understands that-I was trained to say “we are going to raise him about 4 inches up when I count to 3”. And the lead also needs to make sure that there is a clear path for the backboard to slid under, which we tried to do starting at the feet.
For a group of EMT’s or paramedics/trainers, it is second nature. For a group of bystanders, the lead really needs to be specific.
Wow!!!
Thank God for YOU Dr!!!
Yes Repetition is Key!
I am 62 this year and was born into Football and I have to admit the injuries today are even more devastating than the past.
Sometimes I feel these athletes today have NO IDEA of their bodies and how much more toxic devastation can occur these men are built like locomotives the strength endurance OVER THE TOP! which means when there is impact with anyone including the turf it’s capable of a deadly outcome or at least no doubt a traumatic injury.
My Dad played with the NFL early 60’s First Team Dallas Cowboys Frank Clarke the original #82.
Scary then but now Insane.
I Pray YOU Dr are led to something even more than you know right now…
Young black men especially need to learn more about what is actually going on INSIDE Your Body when you collide like a HUMAN MISSILE😱🤪🏈
Need a forum for this!!!???
I Broadcast and Podcast, just saying!
Be well
Blessings and Love 🙏🏼❤️
Immediately noticed that posturing with that hit and told my fiancée “oh shit he’s knocked out”. Sounds like he’s doing alright after the injury. As for the potential for neck injury, I remember growing up a lifelong hockey player when Travis Roy got hurt there always a campaign for “heads up, don’t duck” to help educate players on keeping your head up and not straightening the spine when you duck your chin to prevent spinal injuries in the exact mechanism you just explained.
as a rams fan it had me worried for a while after he wasn't sitting up after the commercial break but he did give us a thumbs up as he was being carted off signaling he was conscious
Great insight. IMPO this is more a cervical spine injury.
Can you do an injury update on Trevor keels of Duke?
Quick question (if you see this), would tucking the chin when doing A forward roll, be safer or keeping the head in a natural position be safer? ( assuming in both instances the goal is for the head to never touch the floor anyway
This hurts as a Cardinals fan, not only losing to the Rams, but losing our best player in the process. Get well soon Budda
I'm not a cardinal fan but I do live in AZ. I think it's time Steve keim gets fired. He has a history of years of mediocre draft picks. He hired Kingsbury out of desperation thinking he had the next Mcvay. He also had that DUI a few years back. Let's be honest if that man was black he would not be the GM still.
This team has a bunch of issues they need to fix in the off-season.
Just so you know, after watching a lot of your videos I noticed the fencing response right way during the game.
What didn't really get shown here but I noticed was the secondary impact of his head on the turf. His skull bounced again off of the ground and needless to say that did not help his fresh concussion.
Thanks Dr.Brian…hoping Budda is going to be ok. Tough way to end the season.
Praying..
The whole reason they lower their heads is to get as low as possible (low man wins the leverage game) and most players ate trying to use their shoulder not their head. Those helmets tend to be bulky and get in the way. I used to have the issue when I played always ended up headbutting everyone before shoulder made contact.
Right on. And great time with the upload. I'm a Seahawks homer but a fan of football in general and you hate to see this. It always sucks. You always want to see best versus best. Everyone works hard for it but unfortunately this stuff happens. I would say it's the nature of the game but there are ways to help mitigate the chances of a severe injury. In my twenty-plus years of playing, the last fifteen or so I used an old school neckroll and it didn't impede my catching or running out of the backfield at all, and keep those eyes up to where you plan on hitting. I took a few hard hits in my time playing, maybe blacked out for a second or two but it was usually friendly fire by a fellow HB or lineman. As a purely offensive player in my later days I realized how under utilized spin moves and stiff arms were. Everyone was trying to get the best juke. I'd sometimes throw a juke out but I almost always followed it with a spin or stiff arm and high knee. Low center of gravity, wide stance, and head up. There's a reason it's taught that way now.
I'm also a fan of football in general, but I like seeing things like this. Does that make me a bad person? I think the physical aspect of the sport is the best part about it. I'm here for this, because otherwise I'd be watching something else.
@@ninezerotwo1778 I've been on both sides of it and I guess I just feel for em. My playing days were over in a split second and I knew it. A lot of them probably go through the same fear. Medical is better now but it's still now guarantee. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about punch you in the gut football, as a bigger back that was my job and I loved it. If I could have I would've switched to SS but I wasn't allowed. Love big hits. Just don't like seeing guys badly injured. Concussion protocol is one thing but injuries to thoracic organs, bones, spinal cord, arteries, that's different.
Can you do a video about what parkour athletes call "ankle thing" I'm interested to know what happening, I figure it's worth a shot asking 😅
Dr what’s the more dangerous concussions, MMA/boxing or football? I feel like football concussions are way more dangerous and vicious
Does the size of the player factor into the decision to use the roll or lift technique? I can see where a 330 pound lineman might be handled differently than a 220 pound DB, RB or receiver.
Yo, idk if it's within your area of expertise, but can you drop a video of Will Barton's head injury against the Blazers
The skeleton with a jersey on is lowkey funny.
Was there a reason for seeing commercials the whole time after the injure?
ive played most sports here in Australia all my life - rugby AFL basketball soccer and even gridiron, and i will never ever understand how in 2022 gridiron still teaches to dive with the helmet as first point of contact in a tackle. every other sport i play it is standard practice to use the outside shoulder, i would love to play gridiron without a helmet or pads as i think it would eliminate these types of tackles instantly.

The arm was the first thing I noticed during the game because of these videos.
Prayers up for Budda. 🙏🏼 Looked pretty bad.
First time I've heard of this. Prayers for Tua.
If you were to find someone in this "fencing" position after a concussion, should they be left however they are laying until EMS arrives? Moved to the recovery position? Or support the neck and roll them onto their back? Or leave the be as long as their ABCs are fine? Thanks Dr.
Leave them as they are. Unless they are in some kind of danger. Like lying in a road and could get hit by a car. Then VERY Carefully try not to rotate the neck and only move them as far as necessary.
There could also be damage to the neck. It only takes a very small movement to cause permanent injury to the spinal cord and life altering paralysis.
In UFC this is known as getting "STARCHED UP"!!
I sprained and fractured my ankle a few times where I had to go to the emergency room but one time when I was at UCLA I heard three cracks and after taking a Motrin my whole left leg had purple bruising on the left side of my left leg what is that an indication of?
Has anyone heard definitively what injuries he sustained from this incident?
Any update on Draymond Green injury
I've seen a lot of boxers when they get knocked out both arms extend out and of course their legs go straight
I'm actually shocked that we don't see more serious injuries like this. These guys are basically getting into a car wreck on every hard hit
Can someone please tell me where he buys his shirts!
