RARE Wrench Finds! USA Craftsman Torque Wrench and Herbrand
I love pawn shops, flea markets, facebook market place , yard sales, estate sales you'll always try s find tool treasures
I myself love digging through the wrench bins to find those old out of business tool brands
Nice history lesson. I'm almost 60, I remember Vanadium brand wrenches being sold by local auto parts stores and they were the cheaper wrenches sold as opposed to the Proto line which was always hanging on the wall on a nice display board behind the counter. Speaking of Proto, the Bonney you used in the video is a look a like for the Proto wrenched I own and love, also have quite a bit of Proto my grandfather gave me. Very well made tools and still get used regularly.
Great to see an older Craftsman USA torque wrench very similar to mine. I am looking for a part(s) for the handle. My handle is missing the bottom cap that I think also turns the screw that adjusts the torque. If the handle bottom cap comes off I'd love to see what it looks like. Haven't been able to find it. Thank you!
Most I find are the newer ones where the lock/unlock mechanism on the handle is all red. Like yours my wrench handle is black with red letters. On mine, Craftsman on the handle is red too, it's 1/2" and the forward/reverse lever for the ratcheting is a straight bar, not a Y. Part number 500781. I see from your video I am missing the o-ring by the ratchet head....cheers.
Great video, love your appreciation of history of tools Garnett.
Emery chiszar Thanks 👍 for some reason I just find tool history intriguing. Thanks for watching!
Garnett - what do you say to pawn shop guys when you haggle for a lower price? Any advice appreciated. I have Herbrand wrenches that my Grandpa used in the 30's; priceless. My Craftsman 1/2-inch torque wrench from the mid-80s recently crapped out: no chance for warranty help when I brought it to the local sears! LOL. If anybody ever does a maintenance & repair video on those - I'm interested. Thank's for your time on these videos
Foot Pusher I find the easiest way is to offer a price on a package deal. You'll usually walk out paying less than their sticker prices.
Wow can't believe I passed on a vintage Herbrand Hose Clamp Plier
I realize they are not a defunct company, but if you haven't tried them yet Proto long pattern combination wrenches are some of my favorite ( I don't care for flank drive copy cats) they fit well and have the industrial rougher finish which I like. Anyway another great video
Great video. Love hearing you talk about tool history.
David Young Thanks, I have thought about making stand alone tool history videos but the idea isn't complete yet.
Good knowledge of hand tools and history of tool companies. Good Job.
GREAT video, I really enjoyed your presentation of the wrench and history...tcb. keep em' coming thanks
weazel14ls Thanks man 👍 I do plan on increasing my upload frequency
You're lucky. I've been trying to find large wrench sizes such as a 15/16 and 1 1/8 to cut up from a pawn shop and haven't had any luck so far.
I takes some time but they're out there sometimes even right under your nose. I recently found another consignment tool store that I drive by on a regular basis! You'll find something.
I have always had the best luck at pawnshops near airports for nice tools. Layoffs are common in aviation.
upside downdog Thanks for the tip! I'll have to check em out!
I had one of those torque wrenches and had nothing but problems with it then it broke.
It was always going out of whack even though i stored it properly, left the settings on 0 and everything.
I bought some tektons torque wrenches and haven't looked back.
Not only do they feel nicer and are all steel construction, they actually stay calibrated.
They were also dirt cheap
minusmodest Yeah, I was reading online that some of these have that issue. I'll have to check on the tool truck soon.
Thanks for the research. I thought I was alone in wondering about these old tool companies. Lol
Hello sir fine post as always. I have a Bonney wrench in my hands that's gotta be 50 + years old, I've had it for 40 yrs and it was pretty old when I got it, the box end broke so I cut it off
That's a good deal how good are urrea tools and who makes them. Thanks
Ive been wanting you to do something about torque wrenches. Not that broken one though. How about a review, what you use, or your thoughts about torque wrenches? By the way you sound just like my friends son who also lives in PA.
I will try to get one like that up for you bud. Thanks for watching!
ha ha "made in oosa". When we used to do the old "read a paragraph out loud to the class" or I'd get called on to read aloud in class I'd purposefully do that, and crack the class up. "The Soviet Onion"... I did get one-upped by a chick in our class who read the word "condemn" as "condom" and just kept going. Your end knuckles on your thumbs are double-jointed. Mine are double jointed but on the middle knuckle where it attaches to my hand. Love the history lesson.
Nice find Garnett
That dose look like the older script for herbrand I have herbrand sockets that just have type instead of the script
Oh hey Garnett u should take a peek I am doing a giveaway if u like to get in on it
Nice. I’ve got a bunch of Herbrand and Bonney I inherited. I use the Bonneys regularly. Herbrand sockets in my road kit. They hold up great. That Herbrand is gorgeous regardless of vintage. Good to know about Vanadium. I have a bunch of those from the ‘60s. They are incredibly good at not rusting or deforming.
Also have an old looking Gedore set of combo wrenches stamped India. Wonder what was up with that?!?
asm154 1 Gefore has joint ventures all over the world including in countries like Brazil, South Africa, and in India during the 80s.
That's cool it's good to hear that u still use them I have a few videos of herbrand tools and a 3 part toolbox if u care to have a look
I've heard tales of the crap gedore wrenches that were made in India, but have never seen any...
I can do a video of them I have a few
Dan Bates I’ll check it out!
Two Bonney universal joints and a half inch drive extension are what I mostly use. The U joints are old. Have that silver satiny finish like the pre-Wayne SK sockets had around the drive end. They still work fine. Not floppy or loose. The drive extension has a detent hole rather than grooves. Makes a real solid connection. It looks newer.
Also have a few oddball sized half inch Bonney sockets and a couple wrenches. The sockets again look similar to the pre-Wayne SK’s. In fact they are hard to tell apart from the SKs also inherited. All that stuff belonged to my great uncle who was a mechanic & industrial electrician.
The Herbrand sockets look newer, maybe ‘70s. They are all 1/4 12 point so I keep them in case I run into any small 12 pt fasteners.
Nice find so far have not have luck In pawn shops. would be lucky if I found a Walmart brand hammer.keep up the god work
My trick is that every time i'm in a new area, I try to find a pawn shop just to see what they have.
Nice Wrench Garnett 😎👍🏼
Chris Chiampo Thanks 👍 I can't wait until the whole defuct wrench set is complete!
Is that a 3/8 inch pound torque wrench? If so I may have some spare parts for you. Gotta shoot a video first though...

I have a wrench that I can't tell the name something corwell but is made in taiwan .
I’ve got the same craftsman v
The scrip looks older
On that wrench as far as I have seen that script was used between 1922 and 1944
Yes, but that thing is waaaayyyyyy too modern to be from that era.
