Demo: BCS Model 853 Walk-Behind Tractor with CAEB Mini Haybaler

- BCS model 853 walk-behind tractor operating the CAEB round haybaler. The tractor is powered by a 13hp Honda manual start engine and is equipped with standard size 5x10x20" wheels. As you can see, total time to form, net wrap and eject the finished bale is about a minute. (our employee Adam Davis, running the machine in this video, only had about 2 minutes experience running the baler as of the time this video was shot, so it can actually be done a bit quicker with a little more experience...I have done completed bales in 45 seconds each consistently.)
**Note in this video that the baler net-wrap cycle is engaged by a lever at the front of the baler...this video is of an older baler model (about year 2000 manufacture), so it does not have the "remote" net wrap activation feature, which is typically located on the steering lever of the baler, which the operator holds in their right hand. With the remote net-wrap activation on the newer balers, the entire process is run from the tractor handlebars, until the bale is ejected onto the platform and needs to be set off onto the ground by the operator.**

While there is the need in the large open pastures for the big machines, this little beauty would mean so much less wastage on hobby/lifestyle farms.
WAAAYYY back in the mid 1980's I saw these used by small-scale (Hobby farms, side gig for a family farm) operators leasing highway and railroad right-of-way in S.E. North Dakota. Glad to see these are still made, the price of hay is pretty high and I already have a BCS tractor. Hmmmmm

hm cant tell much about acres, as over here fields are quite small terraced plots, but i have used 3 reels of net this year (including personal and odd jobs with farmers around.) It is really stupid to use this for big plains as you might see but where the big boys cant go it is a blessing and it saves a lot on waiting for contractors to come do your hay too Since here most of them don't care much about proper service. :)
We would never sell this for "big areas". It is designed for smaller plots and steep ground, which encompasses a lot of farmland in the Eastern USA.

I cannot understand the mentality of people who criticise others for making these useful posts - I am a large scale landowner/farmer with all the big Claas and JD stuff, but I had no idea this kind of equipment was available for the smaller operator. Ignore the negative comments and keep up the good posts !

Hey Einstein, hay IS grass. It can be any of several types of grasses like fescue or timothy. Or it can be clover or alfalfa, or a blend of any of them.
I learned how to hate alfalfa. Nothing against it but everyone that does hay at large scale uses pretty much all alfaalfa disregarding their local grass that grows naturally....

How handy and ecologically friendly! Can you tell me the sizes/weights of the bales?
Bales are 21" x 23", and weight between 40 and 60 pounds depending on material baled and how tight the bale is made (this is adjustable).
What i don't understand is how are you supposed to handle them? Too small for a tractor but a bit big + no handles like a square bale for picking up and stacking by hand. Like I know I could do it by hand but looks like it'll be harder work.

13hp. The baler will work on tractors down to 10hp.

Sure would beat packing into bags by hand. What minimum # acres do you think would be feasible with any Caeb mini-balers, with a compact ride-on tractor? We have 2 acres but could rent a couple more.

Sometimes it looks like some hay is left behind (- with all bailers not just this one). Is it worth running around with a rake then going over it again to make another few bales from the bits?
Depends on how hard up for hay you are.
That's an older CAEB baler. Newer ones are around $12,000.

Why so much twine for such a little bale? Is it possible to bale them with less twine?
its not twine its a net :P and its the best to store bale on their side, water has a hard time penetrating thru

Garden tractors do not have a PTO shaft, so they could not operate one.

Let´s be honest a garden tractor is mostly a "grown ups" toy.
A decent walk behind tractor is a full fledged "tool holder" for farming environment. Their fields of action might cross here and there. But definitely different beasts. ;-)

These implements are made for the Italian-produced walk-behind tractors. There is no off-the-shelf adapter or conversion to fit Gravely tractors, nor is there likely to be, since Gravely no longer produces walking tractors. I guess if you have a machine shop, though, you could "make" it fit...
