Children were encouraged to kick the ball before the game ramped up at the end. Yes it can be viewed as moronic violence but also a bizarre tradition that allows some steam to be let off. Everyone attending or playing knows what they are in for so as long as the violence stays in check it’s a really fun day. Important to note that the entire game including all spectators stopped for a minute silence for a former player.

They can’t, it’s been going 825 years. There are loads of weird traditions like this in the UK, they won’t die the people won’t allow it. They tried killing off cheese rolling but people just kept doing it anyway, still going now years after they tried stopping it.
There is stuff like this in other countries, look at Italy. Nobody got stabbed nobody got shot nobody died, everyone went for a pint after and life goes on.

As important as the silence was (I was there yesterday), the vast, vast majority of viewers from outside Atherstone are clicking on this video to see the fists fly, to see the exciting melee, to see the brutal scenes. I am pleased this video gives some good weighting to the kids at the end catching sweets and kicking the ball, but don't be fooled, we're all human, people want to see a bit of brutality!
