What I really really would like to see is small dairy farms having their own processing facilities and selling milk etc locally. People love fresh right off the farm. Time to nip these big megadairies in the butt.
This was so sad for me to see. I grew up on a dairy farm and was hands on in all aspects of it. At the time, it didn't seem so great - very tied down and never could take a family vacation plus my hands were ever so chapped and sore. Forty years later, I value those lessons and moments cleaning out the gutters, hauling silage to the cows, bedding, feeding the baby calves. and all the new kittens in the haymow. It was hard work that we didn't realize was hard....till one is no longer doing it. Still live on a farm, but my kids and grandkids missed the dairy/milking aspects and we only had/have stock cows. They definitely missed out as all of the naysayers and city dwellers have.
Used to be a 60 cow herd was a large dairy! My father made a living with 20 cows and 120 acres! As did my Uncle with 20 cows and 80 acres! I milked 60 cows and and farmed 900 acres. I sold out!
What a sad trend! Loss of the American dream..My Aunt and Uncle owned a dairy farm in Ohio....great memories. And we always got fresh milk from a dairy in N. Minnesota from three older bachelor brothers that loved their herd. What a loss to all of us.. of all farms and ranches that have made our country.
Watching this in 2020 in MN & their are no family dairies left in my area. We have 2 huge corporate dairies west of us. One is 9500 head & the other is 11000 head. $50,000,000 dollars to build each dairy I heard.
