  • ✔️ About the Episode:
We have finally reached our RV Service Center in Ishpeming, Michigan after weeks of waiting and almost 2,000 miles of driving once we discovered the issue back in Maine. Oh, and don't forget the multiple sets of tires replaced along the way!
Emotions always run high whenever you drop your RV off for repairs, but in this episode we get introduced to the "repair process" and NOT the repair.
Keep Calm and Discover On! Great advice, indeed. We take a break and head over to the beautiful Marquette, Michigan for some downtime and it absolutely did not disappoint! From traveling across "The Mighty Mac" (Mackinac Bridge) during a Fog & High Wind Advisory to enjoying the best of the Great Lakes, this episode has a lot to see.

Saw a comment about Pam becoming a citizen. Congratulations to her! I had noticed her slight accent in your videos, and was curious as to where she emigrated from. We haven’t bought our RV yet and am still researching, but ran across your channel and am loving your videos. It’s refreshing to see a family that is humble and can admit they make mistakes and don’t always know what they’re doing. I get tired of watching the self proclaimed experts and would much rather see your day to day real world experiences. So sorry that you’ve had these axle issues, but otherwise, love your videos!

Thank you Garry! Pam is from Germany and became a citizen last year. She has never been more proud of anything in her life than becoming a U. S. Citizen. It’s also not every day that I get to meet a fellow “Garry” spelled with two r’s. My first name is Garry as well. 😀. We are a veteran family, an immigrant family, and a full time RV family. As perpetual rv newbies, we don’t know enough to tell others what to do. We just show everyone how we do it and most of the time it’s wrong. 😋. We also don’t promote products either. You’re worth a lot more to us than silly gadgets. We show the good and the bad because they are both a huge part of living this RV life. Nothings perfect and we like it that way. All the best in your search for your new rig. Keep us posted on your progress! Best, Lee & Pam.

@@discoveryboundrv Ah, Germany….nice. My father was US Army for 20+ years, and I was born at Landstuhl, but sadly, have not been back to visit yet. BTW, I wasn’t trying to be nosy, I was just curious as she speaks English very well, and assuming she probably learned English in school, but once in a while notices she has a little bit of an accent. Love your videos, and you have such a beautiful family! Thank you so much for making and posting these videos, as I’m gaining a lot of valuable information from them, whether it be maintenance, do’s and dont’s, tank dumping, various products, as well as your suggestions for saving money here and there.
As for the name spelling, my fathers name is Gary with one R, and my parents didn’t want me to be a Junior. 😂. Glad to know that there are a few of us with the same spelling! Thanks again for what you do, and I truly appreciate the reply. Please take care and be safe out there.

My camper is still under warranty. They are under new management now. I hope this continues because I’ve only heard bad things about Camping World. My daughter and I are camping now and we have a leaking faucet. When we return tomorrow I’m going to call for an appointment to have that repaired. Has anyone out there had a good experience with Camping World? I would love to hear about them.

Wow, we had the exact same issue on our travel trailer, and we took it to a big rig alignment shop. They pulled our trailer into the “rack”, set all the lasers up (like on cars) and they bent the axle back into perfect alignment while it was still on the trailer. We’ve been towing it for three years since with two sets of tires in the meantime. It’s still perfectly aligned. Sorry your going through this.

    That's life.
We camped at Ft. Mountain Ga. which is a pretty steep climb, but all went well, until one morning I started the truck(Ram 5.9 cummins diesel) and the engine sounded like I was shaking a metal bucket with rocks in it. I didn't have a scan tool at that time, so we went into the close by small town, but no joy. Adding to this the fact that we had to vacate the site we were in at the rv park the next day, because it was booked......and no other sites were available. Finding a scan tool I found that the fuel rail pressure was way too high......maybe an FCA(fuel control actuator) problem. No place close to get parts. So we threw caution to the wind and hitched up and left, fully expecting a catastophic failure somewhere before our next campground. Strangely, but luckily, about 20 miles down the road, the engine straightened itself out.....engine light went off. It was fine the rest of the way. I replaced that FCA after I got home. Sometimes I think there are angels who help us out, and then other times there are devils doing the opposite. Lol.

Scan tools are worth their weight in Gold. I've got a Banks I Dash that has saved me 5x its price at least with the ability to reset nuisance codes that these newer trucks with Al Gore riding shot gun have, ready to shut you down or leave you in "lmp mode" miles from no where without cell service.

If we can just keep the Al gore types from abusing it, along with the internal combustion engine.

Hey guys, just watched your latest video regarding your tire issue. Do yourself a favor and keep in contact with Dexter yourself, they will need the serial number of your axle to track your claim. They can inform you of shipping lead times more accurately. I had a similar experience, took my camper to the dealer I purchased the unit from with similar tire wear, they got Dexter to replace the axel under warranty. I was also told it would take between 4-6 weeks for shipping from Dexter in Indiana to MD. 6 weeks later I still had not heard from the dealer and decided to contact Dexter directly to follow up. Seems that the axel was delivered to the dealer roughly a week after the claim was filed. Would you be able to pick it up if you’re in the vicinity? Start planning when/where you will have it replaced. Good luck.

I really enjoy your content and how you give the details of each place you visit. Hope you got your axle issue fixed to your satisfaction. I realize that by the time you read this you've probably already had the work done. Good decision to go directly to the tire shop for the tires and bypass Camping World. I'd do the same with the axle and go directly to a Dexter axle shop, perhaps in the Elkhart, IN area as you travel south from Mackinaw. Not sure I'd fully trust the diagnosis of a "bent backing plate" that the Camping World mechanic gave. The spindle, hub, bearings, and drum assemblies support the wheel. The "backing plate" supports the brake shoes and other brake components, not the weight of the trailer. Changing a trailer axle is a routine job for an axle shop, and the alignment is very important after the work is done. Hope it was a warranty job and not out of pocket.

@DISCOVERY BOUND RV - I was thinking the same thing; it would have been fun to be neighbors. We've full-timed in an RV for 5 years because of work but we're settled down now. It was a challenge but a fun adventure, too.
My sister lived in Marquette for many years. When she passed in 2016, I drove to the funeral. After the funeral and some time with my siblings and brother-in-law, I hauled a load of 4 dozen pasties from Jean Kay's Pasties back to Texas in a Yeti cooler topped with dry ice wrapped in newspapers. They were excellent. Good thing it was November and the weather was cold. But the dry ice kept them frozen. Y'all could have thrown a few in the freezer and baked them whenever you wanted.
      Safe travels, y'all!

I have an appointment Monday at an axle shop here in Tucson. They told me to expect $700-800, to have it replaced. And of course we will have to replace the tires on that back axle.

Our problem was that we just had to get there. We found out the hard way that Warranty does NOT cover tire replacement. Live and learn, right. Best, Pam & Lee

If the backing plates are bent can't they just replace the complete backing plate and break assembly or was the spindle bent, when I had my boat trailer and needed new brakes I just bought the complete backing plate with all the brake pads and springs all in one kit.

Most any repair shop can fix axle. Just ordered one thru Napa for a car hauler. 3 days

    • @waexplorer
      @waexplorer Год назад

The issue here is warranty. That may determine who can order the part and who can fix it. Out of warranty, NAPA is a good alternative and any repair shop can do it. Possibly Camping World's (YUK) install labor is more than the the axle and install at an independent shop also. Plus NAPA may be able to get one in days, not weeks.

Dexter will not cover. If you have 15 or inch wheels change to 17 l.5 wheels and get truck tires.
It will cost but long run it will save you money. Been their done that. Several times I replace tires. My unit was 36 ft 5er with Dexter axles and 15 inch tires to heavy.

Hi Stephen. The easy answer is that we didn't know what we were doing at the time. We called Jayco and they said they couldn't help us. We even passed through Elkhart, Indiana and couldn't find anyone that do a diagnostic for us. Everyone was booked for months. We aren't overweight, but this axle issue definitely taught us a lesson to make sure we don't get close to our max gross weight either. Best, Pam & Lee (P.S. If we show a video of Independent Suspension & Disc Brakes Install, then you will know we have won the lottery. LOL)
