Celebrating 50 Terrier Travels vlogs, join as we look back on my fondest and best memories from being obsessed with trains. There's some surprises in this list, it's not even all railways, but many of these special occasions have shaped my interests and hobbies and I hope inspire you to have your own Railway Adventures.
Thank you to Surfshark for sponsoring this video. I had great fun reviving my characters Jon and Jerry from The Railway Thieves, The Not-So-Great Train Robbery and The Slate Escape to film a little story in stop-motion.

One of my favorite railway memories was on my family’s summer, and we were going to the Tallylyn Railway, and we got a little surprise… It just so happened that the railway was setting up for the 2023 everything goes gala early, so we got to see Alf, most of the freight stock, one of the Bageuly duo, and the 1950’s car they put on one of the flatbeds! Not only that, but we had accidentally gotten the wrong directions and walked to Pendre instead of Tywin Warf, but a very kind worker let us ride the train heading towards the ward for free! It was a truly magical trip all together.

Favorite railway memory would have to be my first day volunteering on the Talyllyn. I show up, having just flown in to the UK from Los Angeles, greeted by some of the friendliest people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. After helping to clean Dolgoch, the fireman said “You’re coming with us today!”. A day of full line trips inside the cab of an engine of such prestige was truly unforgettable. Even if the jet lag started to hit towards the end haha

I remember the Great Gathering of A4s, which was an amazing event. Having visited the NRM a great many times, I’ve been witness to a load of great locomotives, including Flying Scotsman and Maude. Getting to go to places and see amazing locos has been awesome; Bressingham steam gardens, the North Yorkshire Moors and Barrow Hill have been some of my favourites.

In terms of working steam engines, I have many favorite moments.
    1. Seeing the N&W 611 at the Strasburg Railroad. Absolutely magical.
    2. Chasing the Connecticut Valley Railroad’s #40
    3. Riding behind N&W 475 for the first time.
Static steam engines, there are *many* more.

When I four years old my dad took me to the GCRN, which wasn’t far from my house. Turns out it was City Of Truro in steam and visiting, that was the first loco of any kind I ever rode behind! Growing up I was adamant about volunteering there, and come my 15th birthday I immediately became a volunteer. Ive been there well over a year now and I must say its the best decision I ever made!

My best memory with railroads? Definitely my first time running a locomotive on the Connecticut Valley, aka Essex Steam Train & Riverboat. I spent so long learning what each lever and knob did, and I was finally allowed to run our #97. I will never forget the day. Going all the way up the line, coming back and coming around the train, coupling from the rear, and pulling all the way back.

that's quite common with the museum train fleet we have here in New York. The standard expression is "slightly slack jawed, head tilted slightly and moving slowly from one side to the other as the train passes." well, at least these days more people are aware of these trains, still, that look is absolutely priceless.

One of my favourite railway memories was when I got to go on the footplate of the flying Scotsman. Another one was when i was young and I was walking back home with my Nan and we passed over the motorway and saw a locomotive boiler and wheels passing by. Now I think of it, that boiler and wheels must of been going to bream in the Forest of Dean

My favorite moment was finding Norfolk Southern Interstate Heritage Unit and capturing the photo that was my thumbnail for a good chunk of my YT career.
I've since lost the photot but seeing the engine again would be epic.
I unfortunately haven't seen any steam locomotives, if any at all.

3801 has a few more reasons for being famous than just visiting every mainland state and territory
In 1964 she set the record for fastest journey between Sydney and Newcastle which wasn't beaten until 1988
She starred in the 1974 film "A Steam Train Passes"
And a quick correction, 3801 wasn't actually built at Eveleigh, all 5 of the streamlined 38s were built at Clyde Engineering at Granville, Eveleigh built 13 of the non-streamlined 38s whilst Cardiff built 12.

I've loved your vlog series practically since the first. Setting aside the obvious vicarious experience of being able to explore and enjoy railway heritage in a country thousands of miles away from my own, it's the sheer amount of joy you show hanging out with your friends and loved ones during your adventures that makes your videos so special. As someone with few friends of my own, and those that share this particular obsession being far away, seeing you laughing and joking around with your mates who are also passionate about steam can briefly fool me into thinking that maybe I could have such a happy life too. That, and the music in your videos are always bangers.
As far as personal experiences to share, I'll never forget my first ever overseas holiday, and my first time ever traveling far from home on my own, going to visit the Bluebell Railway's 50th Anniversary Gala. I was there for the whole weekend and had a fair few incidents of my own. One that sticks out was on the final day; I was at Horsted Keynes toward the end of the day and getting rather bored, so on a whim I decided to hop the next train leaving. The train was packed end to end, and initially the only seat I could find was in a 1st Class coach. Unfortunately, I only had a 3rd Class ticket so the guard, though understanding, still escorted me to the next coach and found me a seat. The family I was sat with were pleasant but not the best company, so I elected to stand in the rearmost vestibule at the very back of the train soaking up some British Rail air conditioning (sticking my head partly out the window, breathing in the coal soot). When we arrived at Sheffield Park I saw another train standing on the Up platform. I asked a member of staff who happened to be standing nearby if that was the last train before the Cavalcade. "Yes," he said, "It leaves in 30 seconds." My blood ran cold, not only because I didn't want to miss the grand finale, but also because the friendly folks from my B&B that I'd rode down with would likely leave after it and I didn't want to be left behind. I fast marched up the platform, excusing myself as politely as I could through the disembarking crowd. But when I reached the footbridge two families were trying to manhandle prams up the steps. Starting to really panic, I openly ran up past Sir Archibald Sinclair who had brought our train down, across the ground level crossing, up the platform ramp, and leapt into the first open door I saw, which turned out to be the guard's compartment on the newly restored LSWR 3rd Brake 1520. When the guard returned, I hastily explained/lied that every compartment was full. I'm not sure, but I think the guard might have remembered me from when I rode in the luggage section a couple days before, so he let me off. Also riding with us was another railwayman and a local vicar! We had a grand time chatting about the braking system and how it worked. As it turned out, I arrived back to Horsted with time to spare as not only did Archie return with his train, he then made another round trip up to Kingscote and back before the Cavalcade began. It was all worth it though. Seeing these beautiful engines together that I'd only seen in books and websites, hearing their whistles sing out with joy in the evening sun, I was truly moved to tears. P.S. By the look of your photos, I wasn't far from you on the paddock, maybe a few yards further up the hill.
I've been back to the UK once since then, on a month-long Study Abroad program to study Industrial History. And while that had its own few adventures, like being temporarily stranded on the Isle of Man dining train due to Caledonia running out of water and needing to make a mad dash, or the Llangollen Railway guard kindly holding the return train an extra minute or two so I could snap a pic of Berwyn station, or wanting to visit Bristol but being too weak from bronchitis so I alighted at Swindon instead to visit the STEAM Museum (which I thought was overall better than the NRM, hot take), or when most of our group went to tour Conwy & Caernarfon Castles while a friend and I rode the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways through God's Castle, or the time after riding the Snowdon Mountain Railway when I asked a friend to look after my souvenirs while I took a quick look at the Llanberis Lake Railway across the road, telling him "I'll be right back", and then returning 2 hours later after a surprise ride (he was not pleased, but I bought him an ice cream to make up for it), concluding with a bus tour across the Menai & Britannia Bridges during which we gave the driver a round of applause for getting our coach through the narrow tower arches. So many memories, but none to compare with that first ever odyssey, one of the pivotal events in my whole life.
