There's one on my house and I remembered seeing them in the City of London. I knew it was something to do with OS but this video was really interesting and informative.
Well I have learnt a lot on this video, I have often wondered what the little carvings meant or were called. Thank you both so much for this, excellent information clearly presented.
Thanks for the video, I took this up in lockdown and have spotted near 100 in and around Chichester, including some not on the map, so nice to learn a bit more about this. Also, seeing people who 'get' this and find it fun like me, I totally agree it is like going on a treasure hunt. Plus, you're local to me - I'll have to look at your other vids.
I would adore to see you do Arundel, the castle, the flood planes/marshes surrounding it and some bits and bobs around there, the cathedral would make a cracking video!
As well as looking on old maps there is a database here:- www.bench-marks.org.uk/ There you can find recorded (recently found) ones in an area by entering a Post Code or OS Grid ReferenceHappy hunting
Aaawww!!! I popped over here as I saw you ref it on it on another vid. And who should appear, but the ever lovable, alway "orange" Martin! Quite enjoyable vid. Really interesting to learn about benchmarks. If I was to had seen them I would have thought it was a Mason mark. Always learning something new from you!!! What town were you by the way? It looked lovely (& historically old!😁)

I’ll keep an eye open next time I walk to the pub 👍
Hopefully it will keep you level on the way back! :)

Thank you very much.
Warminghurst, you have added an erroneous word "There" to your link. It may be worth correcting for the unwary. Thanks. Geoff.
