I've never been to Portugal. But out of all the European destinations a could choose, Portugal is on the top.
I´d say the entire Iberian peninsula is pretty much on the top of my list... Got a small glimps of that on a trip to Mallorca. We stayed as far from the tourist hotspots as we could and it was just a good time.
I've been all over Portugal and Spain, it's quite neat.

I mean, as i could see, there is a war between you two, and a lot of brazilians seem to hate portuguese people for things that happened during the colonization, and for other weird reasons.

Brazilian People and prople from other Portuguese Speakers Countries around the world, have easy access to Portugal, that's why we come here. And besides the jokes about the colonization period, we don't have any issues nowadays.

As a Portuguese person, I consider the Brazilian people to be very caring, hard-working people who, like many Portuguese people, are looking for a better life in other countries. Denspurtaer Lol, you're just listening to modern-day woke culture. Portugal and Brazil share a close connection. Before Europeans expanded their influence worldwide, Brazil did not exist. While these regions had native tribes, there was no unity among them. Unless you are a native, you are likely a descendant of Europe or Africa. The narrative of making wealthy European nations feel guilty for their past is indicative of a woke mental disorder. Brazil went independent from Portugal by the son of the King of Portugal. He wanted to be King and not prince and he decided to just stop tied with his father when his parents returned to Lisbon.
During the Napoleon years, the capital of Portugal was Rio de Janeiro. The Portuguese initiated the exploration of new territories, with the blessing of God, of course. What schools often neglect to teach is how prosperous many former colonies were before gaining independence from European rule. I recently watched a video showcasing the capital of Angola, Luanda, before it gained independence from Portugal just 60 years ago. The footage, shared by a former black leader, depicted an incredible city. I was at a loss for words, and the African leader expressed a desire for Portugal to still be ruling over them, as the African rebels had destroyed everything they had built, unable to govern effectively.
South Africa provides another example of how independence from former European colonial powers led to the destruction of nations. As for Brazil, it's a nice country but if they only stayed with Portugal they could have been very prosperous. However, I think Portuguese and Brazilians are overall very close. I know that a lot of Portuguese people have a problem with the immigration problem, but that is normal in every country among very vocal people. It's happening everywhere as as a woke culture we are becoming more and more divided.
If memory serves me right, the colors of the portuguese flag do have meaning.
The red represents the blood loss of those who fought for the country.
While the green represents the hope for the future.
And the 7 castles in the flag are considered a symbol of the Portuguese victories over their Moorish enemies, under Afonso III, who supposedly captured seven enemy fortresses in the course of his conquest of the Algarve, concluded in 1249

Also, the portuguese government ordered some portuguese flags, to be hung outside the European Parliament in Brussels, but the flags were made in China and had chinese Pagodas instead of european castles, in our "esfera armilar" at the center of the flag.
The chinese fake flag was only noticed after it was hoisted in Brussels. A portuguese diplomat went running outside ordering the chinese fake portuguese flag to be removed from outside the EU parliament.

Im spanish, and i feel and need that i have to travel to Portugal someday, even if they are my opposite side neighbours, cause im from Barcelona, to me its like an unknown country, and as long as i know, general media in spain doesnt talk to much about it, like if it doesnt exist, but being in the same peninsula, we should be better neighbours and know better each other.

Pero en realidad muchos de nosotros portugueses si conocemos a España y a sus gentes y culturas, tal como muchos hablan ingles y/o el frances. En la tele tenemos hasta las noticias de españa con regularidad. Es triste que lo mismo no sea comun para vosotros. Yo se que un catalan no es como un basco, un andaluz, un galego, un castellano, un navarreno, etc, etc.., y muchos portugueses han percorrido España y comprenden bien a los españoles (los gallegos y todos los que hablan castellano, claro). Creo, y lo digo como una critica y no como un insulto, que a algunos españoles (y lo mismo sera verdad para algunos portugueses) les haria bien conocer mejor a los otras gentes, y otras lenguas. Por ejemplo, en Portugal se hacen mucho mas las leyendas, siendo que la doblage normalmente se usa más para los ninos, pero en Espana casi siempre se hace solo la doblage. Eso hace con que muchos espanoles no se acostumbren a oir (y como tal a leer/hablar/escribir) en una lengua que no la suya. Lo que claramente no es su caso, una vez que su inglés es muy perceptible. Perdón por los errores ocasionales.
If the Spanish really wanted to know Portugal and the Portuguese, they wouldn't go to Portugal with an air of superiority and pretend that they don't understand our language. We Portuguese are polyglots, we speak several languages, we are taught in schools besides our mother tongue.

Sorry, Nuno, that's not true. Rome was founded in the 8th century b.C., circa 750 b.C. The date you saying (more or less 1100 b.C) reports to the mythical foundation by Ulisses, which we know is just that: mythical (I'm an History teatcher).

About Canada, here´s a fun fact: Ancient portuguese maps have the word CANADA on it, but in earlier explorer times (1480...), that means »Cá Nada« or in english »Here Nothing«. They saw lots of land and lack of people to trade goods. That`s the origin of the name 🙂

I have been to Portugal at least 10 times, I love it, I love the food , I love the people, I love the weather, and lots of people speak English .
In Portugal today, the English language is learned from kindergarten to college.
In the old days (70s/80s) we learned English in prep school that's one of the reasons why Portuguese people speak English, another reason is that the movies that are shown on TV are subtitled in Portuguese, keeping the original audio, be it English (UK), English (American), French, Spanish, Japanese or even Turkish 😜

Manueline armillary sphere represents the maritime discoveries. The "Quinas" (blue shields with 5 white dots) repesent the Battle of Ourique, won by D. Afonso Henriques (!st King of Portugal) to the Moors. White Dots represent the wounds of Christ. The (7) castles represent the battles won by D. Afonso II to the Moors.
@@Antawnyoo that would all be good and dandy if it wasn't all bs made up after the fact. Starting with the details and ending with the colors:
- Armillary sphere: was never the symbol of Portugal or discoveries, it was the symbol of Brazil and first appeared on the new flag of the Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves during the Napoleonic war when the Kingdom of Portugal had to be transfer to Brazil. So to the normal Portuguese symbols (coat of arms) the armillary sphere was added to signify the "kingdom" of Brazil since the court of Portugal was now there. When the court returned to Portugal the armillary sphere was removed from the flag. Fast forward a century or so and we have the Republican revolution (or as we know it, _"Implantação da República")_ and the new flag (the current one) is presented and the armillary sphere reappears, being retcon into meaning discovery and blablabla.
- The Quinas (5 escudetes) have had many meanings throughout history. First explanation was that each of the _quinas_ were a mark where the shield with the first Portuguese flag (the simple blue cross on a white background) was damaged and as was tradition back then they didn't fix the shield but liked the way the flag was damaged on those spots so they kept it with "escudetes" _(quinas)_ in the place where the nails were. At that time the number of inner dots on the "escudetes" (the dots are called _"besantes")_ were 11, so there goes the Christ wounds (it only came to be 5 dots in 1485 with D. João II).
- The castles: first flag with castles was the D. Afonso III flag (1248), and had 16 castles. Then in 1385 D. João I commissioned a new flag and this one had 12 castles. And again in 1485 D. João II changed them to 8 castles (remember, he also changed the _"besantes"_ to 5, from 11). It would be changed to 7 castles in the second half of the XVI and stay like that till today... so lots of changes to the number of castles, none meant anything apart that stylistically when they first appeared on the flag they were "fashion".
Now for the colour of the flag:
- Green and red where merely the colours of the Portuguese Republican Party and of the two revolts: January 31st 1891, Oporto; and October 5th 1910, the day of _"Implantação da República"._ It was only afterwards that the meaning was retconned to have a more patriotic meaning and less a party (Portuguese Republican Party) ownership.
So, to sum it up: all we are told about the symbology of the flag is bs. It's a nice story but bs. It all comes down to aesthetics and political party representation.
@@DDanV I sincerely don't know if you're right, you seem very sure of what you're saying (but that could be an "oratory" trick to make people believe you), but one thing, at least, you got wrong: although not appearing on the monarchic flag, the armillary sphere was adopted by D. Manuel I, as a symbol of his dominance over (much of) the world.
Portugal won the Battle of Diu, against an aliance between several forces including the ottoman empire.
This battle was the turning point in history that allowed europe to become the center of the world, until then it was asia.
That battle only happened because someone killed the wrong guy and his father went there to avenge him.
I toured Europe a few years ago with my girlfriend, and our trip concluded in Portugal. While Europe boasts incredible nations, Portugal left an indelible impression on us. Initially planning for just a five-day stay, we extended our trip to a month. Although cities like London, Paris, Rome, and Brussels are undeniably beautiful, they somehow fell short of our expectations. People seemed less friendly, the food generally disappointing, and everything came with a hefty price tag.
Contrary to our expectations, Portugal turned out to be incredibly charming with outstanding cuisine and it's culture is just captivating and rich. I would highly recommend it to anyone, although, of course, Europe as a continent is truly a gem. The feeling of being in another world is palpable; the contrast between the ancient buildings of Europe and the artificiality of our modern life in the US and Canada is striking. On a different note, I hope Europe effectively manages its migrant crisis to safeguard its rich history, which is at risk of being lost. Madeira, the Hawaii of Europe is a secret the rich Europeans don't want Americans and Canadians to know about. Stay away, this place is not for us Americans!!! haha .... Also, check out the Azores...it's a natural beauty.

Been there several times… Algarve coast in summer is wonderful…Madeira and The Azores island in late spring is awesome….. even if it’s raining quite often….. and the cherry on top of the cake..is the city of Porto….amaizing historical center …. and nice beaches in the west by the Atlantic Ocean …..love it 🥰

Great video and information. There are many tons more, including all of the positive influences (language, food, architecture, art, old world medicine/science, values/standards/virtues, etc, etc) that the Portuguese culture brought all over the world (especially in their training Ports/territories; which were also a bunch more that eventually lost to other European countries, including to the Spanish, British, French, Dutch, etc).
Of course there are a number of ingredients (spices, plants, fruits, teas, vegetables, etc) in the cuisine of Europe originally brought back to Europe by the Portuguese. So much more than what they are given credit for, mostly because the Portuguese people are generally down to earth, very real (also a Portuguese word), generally honest and have more than enough humility.
There are so many dishes/cuisines to list, from sea food, to many meat dishes, vegetable dishes, combination dishes (i.e. stews, soups, paelha), plenty of various (ancient & old & modern recipes) types of breads (old fashioned, country, papasecos, bejus, centeio, milho, etc), deserts/cakes (the nata just happens to be one the most popular), there are also relatively old fusion recipes (which include the natural ingredients, usually from their former territories), so many types of variety of Portuguese sausages (alheiras, linguica, salpicão, even blood sausage), presunto (which Americans relate to being Italian), numerous original stews, soups, cheeses, one of the best olive oils in the world, of course the wine/liquor (Red, Tinto, Verde, Port Madeira...original cherry liquor, aguardente, brandy, cachaça, etc). Let's not forget the famous Bacalhau (dried/salted/preserved Atlantic Cod), which there used to be a saying in Portugal, that goes something like this: "The Portuguese have a bacalhau (salted Cod) recipe, for every day of the year (meaning ~365 recipes), and that's just around one type of fish. And, although many Americans aren't big on octopus or sardines, don't totally exclude them, till you've tried the Portuguese recipes, pretty sure most (unless you don't eat seafood) can find at least one they'll like/enjoy!

1- the monument you admired is the Jerónimos Monastery and opposite is the Belém Tower. These are spectacular works of architecture
I'm portuguese and that video only shows a slice of Portugal is. We have so much, although we are small, we are massive in culture, cuisine,place to go and stuff to do. Great videos btw 👌
Ok, so I'm 5 months late, but I just have to point out that Portugal also has a music style of its own called Fado, which is considered a world heritage. We also were the ones who introduced tea to England. And, for those of us who are religious, we have this little city called Fátima, which is the place where Mary, mother of Jesus (or our lady of Fatima as we call her) is said to have appeared to three children known as the "Três Pastorinhos". We also have some of the most incredible historic tales like the love story of D. Pedro I and Lady Inês de Castro (basically the prince fell in love with one of his wife's maids and his father didn't approve of this relationship and sent two men who killed her in front of her children. The prince got so mad that he had his men chase the killers. One of them escaped but the other one was killed and D. Pedro actually ate his heart. When he became king, he had his people dig up Inês and placed her dead body next to him in the throne. He then demanded everyone in court to kiss her hand and call her their queen. Years later he built his tombstone facing hers so that when they got reborn the first thing they saw was each other.). One other story I really liked when I was like 9 or 10yo, is the story of Queen Saint Isabel. Queen Isabel loved to help the poor and would often go out of her way to daily feed the hungry with fresh bread. Her husband, the king, was very much against it and actually threatened her that he would kill her if she ever did it again. But one day, in the middle of winter, she escaped to help them anyway while the king was hunting. But he came unexpectedly and was about to kill her when she said she was not handing out food, she was giving roses. In the middle of winter, like I said. The king knew she was lying, so he asked her to show what was in her basket, and much to his surprise, instead of bread, she had full bloomed roses. This has been known to history as "The Miracle of the Roses" and when she died, she became known as a saint.
I'm sorry I'm babbling a bit too much here (history nerds can be over barring 😂)
But I have to reference just one more story about Portuguese history that I simply just love. So, we had this prince, right, and when he was only 3yo, he was the first and only in line to the throne. He had someone else in the family (whom I don't remember at all) take his place until he was 14. When he finally got to rule, he didn't care about keeping the line, all he wanted was to expand the country. So he leaded the trupes into war, but they lost. His body was never found and many believed he had not been killed, but taken as a prisoner. After he went missing, Portugal had no one to rule and we were kinda being taken over by Spain. But people kept on believing that the king would eventually appear to them in a misty night, to take the throne back and save them. This 14 or 15 yo kid was now a symbol of hope to our people.
And I'm sorry to continue rambling 😂 but I just have one more fact to share with you. Just one, I promise ahah
The green and red flag actually represents hope, freedom and blood. That's why the red part of the flag is a bit bigger than the green. Cause we had this dictator (my grandmother is always talking about this). His name was Salazar (yes, like in Salazar Slytherin. Did you know that the robes j.k.rowling created for hogwarts students were actually inspired in our college uniforms? Apparently her husband was Portuguese or something idk, back to the topic) Salazar was a Lil piece of sh*t and besides censoring our music, freedom of speech, freedom of love (cause most doctors and teachers had to have the government's approval to get married with someone), and even childhood (cause back then if you wanted to like ride a bike or something, you had to pay a fee, and in school, girls were separated from boys, and most students were boys cause girls had to help out at home) he also sent every man to war in Africa. And the red on the flag represents the blood spilled in the war but also freedom because of April's 25th (which was great but I promised I wouldn't talk about anything else. Although I already did 😂) and lastly, for some reason unknown to me, green is a symbol of hope. Well, envy too, but y'know hope (although white is also a symbol of hope... No, white is peace... I think) and yeah that's why our flag is mainly red and green.

Yeah, we do, last week and for most winter, the interior of Portugal which is kind of mountainous goes below zero celcius. Winter can be harsh in northern portugal more like in Minho, Trás-os-Montes, Beira Alta and Beira Interior regions.
Lisbon can also reach 0 celcius from time to time, happened to me more than once so yeah.
But, most of the year is mild weather, very sunny, with good wine (that was not mentioned in the list) and food.
The city who made that big napkin, Vila do Conde is where I'm from, currently living in Madeira Island.
Yeah, some 800 years of history as an independent country with touches from ancient cultures and traditions seen to this day.
In Northern and Center Portugal there is a big Celtic influence, you can even see it on the christian crosses with the donut around the cross, all made of stone and dating centuries back, it's all pretty much made of granite from housing to monuments, a lot is shared with Galicia (Northwestern spain).
Southern Portugal is more influenced by moors, with houses and architecture that is strikingly close to what we see in northern Africa, which is also very similar to southern Spain (Andaluzia).

Nazare is amazing by the sea and awesome sea food. Nazare has huuuge waves. In winter these are the biggest waves in the world.

I believe Portugal is the sunniest country in Europe! We do get snow on mountaintops or when temperatures drop really low in the North but it's rare to say the least. Last time it snowed where I live was I believe 2008.

Yup, the only places where it snows every year are the mountains in the northeast (Districts of Bragança, Vila Real, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco)

Glad you checked Portugal, sea side is beautiful, but so inside in mountains areas and countryside. As you just mentioned in your title, Portugal is a long some of the oldest European countries but never had such popularity as France or Spain , for Tourism. Great video and great country, being Portuguese /French it's always a pleasure to see more about my parents country. Portuguese people are very kind and welcoming, you have lot of good sea food , but good wine ( you should know Porto wine from Porto a Portuguese city) you should try meals like arroz de marisco, bacalhau a Braz, francesinha, leitao , churrasco and so much more ;)
As an Portuguese person, Santarém it's also a nice place to visit, love from Portugal ♥️.
The first building is in Lisbon, "Mosteiro dos Jeronimos". The stile is "Manuelino" is like a Portuguese vertion of Gothic.

The weather here in Portugal is really good. Usually really warm and sunny, we just get some snow in serra da estrela in winter.

About the weather in the summer is hot and up north is pretty cold in the winter and you have in Serra Da Estrela you have snow in winter as well. Just one thing the water is cold only on the South is warmer

The thing about portugese food/cuisine is its not flashy to look at. It's not designed to hack your taste buds. But it digests clean and leaves you feeling healthy and strong. We like hearty dishes.
Portuguese cuisine is very good. You gotta check out a "Francesinha" (traditional dish from the city of Porto, is a sandwich served in a plate covered in cheese and spicy sauce) and some "Bifanas" (thin spicy pork strips usually eaten in a bread roll).
Don't forget to make an appointment with a doctor before eating a Francesinha or could be the last meal you'll ever had.
dude, im from porto portugal, couple months ago after a night clubing i was by the Douro River, and it was sunday morning there was a marathon with people dressed as super heroes it was the funniest thing ive ever seen, and we didnt even know it would happen, we where just thre for the view and the quitness

And about the weather, yes there is some snow not so thick and not so long lasting at some heights. We froze for about 15 days in January around 35/40 F mainly by night even dough the mid north central city of Coimbra sits on about the same parallel as New York City.

Fun fact: in Terceira (an island in the azores) you can go inside a volcano, it's called "Algar do Carvão".

To understand the portugueses you should be looking for the battle of Diu, or battle of Aljubarrota. Remember, we start the sea dicoveries in 1415 in Ceuta. We only had 1milion people at that time.(because of the black death). Even so,we descovered 2/3 of the inhabited world. How Brave. Check the areas of the portuguese colonies and you will understand how difficult it was to achieve all that with such few men, impressive...

Weather is fairly moderate, near the coast line it's usually between 5 or 10C (40/50F) during winter up to temps around 30/36C (86/96F) during the peak of summer. If you go inland, closer to the border with Spain (where I'm from), temps can go as low as -5/-10C (15/20F) in winter and 40/45C (105/110F) during the hot summer months. It doesn't rain a lot even during winter, so it's usual to have a lot of sunny winter days. I would say, a good time to visit, is during spring (May/June) or fall (September/October).

I've only been to Lisbon and it's very beautiful with lots of hills, kind of like San Francisco of Europe. FYI, in restaurants, if the server asks if you want bread with your meal, it is not complimentary.

Portugal are nice, though i have just visited Lissabon for a few weeks while we was in dock at the lisnave shipyard ( 1991 i think it was )
There was a bar called Copehnagen bar as i recall, a few 100 M from the main gate to the shipyard.
Now both the shipyard and bar are long gone as i recall from looking at google maps years ago.
Portugal is a small country like my country ( Denmark ) are.

Portuguese were the ones who discovered Australia, Columbus was more than likely to be Portuguese, Brasil was discovered by Portuguese even earlier than the date attributed to Cabral, Portuguese maped most of the west and east American continent coast even before Columbus, they had cod fishing settlements in New Foundland and Labrador before the so called discovery of Americas (there's maps predating Columbus with Portuguese royal flags all over Canada an current day US) , which by the way are just translations of the original Portuguese names: Terra Nova e Lavrador. Even Canada is a Portuguese name. These so called Cod Lands ( Terras dos Bacalhaus) were named repeatedly Terras dos Cortes Reais, Terra do Labrador, Terra de Estêvão Gomes e CANADÁ! João Vaz Corte Real was from Tavira, Algarve, and had properties named Canada. There's even an old road sign with the Canada name on it. Also Canadas were what Portuguese seamen called narrow and windy sea passageways.

Regarding food: Francesinha, Cozido à portuguesa, amêijoas à bulhão pato, Feijoada, Leitão, alheira, morcela, chouriço, bacalhau à Brás, bacalhau com natas, bacalhau com batatas a murro, Pastéis de bacalhau, caldo verde, requeijão, queijo fresco, lapas, mexilhões, caramujos, arroz de pato, Pastéis de nata, Pastéis de tentugal, Bolo de mel, Bolo de Família, dobrada, etc.
I've been to Luxemburg, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Spain, France, Portugal (São Miguel - Azores; Madeira + Porto Santo - Madeira; Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Leiria, Albufeira....)
