+C Heidt Yep, you sir/ma'am, are correct.. I've been waiting over 3 years for someone to call me out on the error and you are the first to do so.. I had filmed several versions of before/after air-layerings and posted what I thought were the best of each.. And yes, I mention different pot/plant numbers in my part 1 and part 2 videos.. Now move your chair to the front of the class..
+PeanutButterMan LOL, Just watched the 2 vids for first time, and I picked it up.... was suprised someone else did... Now to go and check if you mentioned what season you did the airlayering as I am in a different country :) Though I am thinking you must have different Camilias, as we dont propogate ours we dig them out and burn them, as they go brown as soon as you touch them, and make a huge mess..... We do have one variety that look like carnations which is not bad..... the others Yukky .... do you have a horticultural name, so I can see exactly what plant it is.....TU. and If you didnt mention season, could you please advise ... Thanks again. this was nice and clear, ..and easy to follow and to do with a one person gardener....
Idea for "what to do with them". Offer a workshop at your local botanical garden or have one in your yard. I did a four hour one at Georgia Southern U Botanical Garden. Newbie to South, learned how to graft and got to take tiny graft (3") home (bloomed first time 9 years later when I forgot I'd planted it there! He showed us this method, and made some funds for the Botanical Garden. I think the Georgia Camellia Society also supplied support. Thanks for allowing me to remember this. I am so glad I'm aging with access to internet as "auxillary memory" to remind me EXACTLY how he did this.
Excellent teaching videos, parts 1-2 both! I will attempt using your air layering method. Really excellent, practical, thorough advice on propagating new Camellias. Very clear. Better than most academic lessons on propagation.
Hi from NE Georgia!🙂 I paused the video and... wow, that's a lot of potted camellias! You have a really nice back yard. I'm assuming camellias do well even in shade since it's heavily wooded at the edge of your yard where your pots are. If that's true, I definitely need to get some camellias started at my place. It's amazing how many roots grew in such a short time. Thanks for sharing... and for keeping this video up all these years. It's very helpful. 👍
Most of the ones that I've done have been about as thick as a pencil. But I have done larger branches as well with good success. The larger the branch, the more sphagnum moss I would use.
Your videos are awesome and I am ready to try air layering now. I am in Savannah also but having trouble finding sphagnum moss and root hormone locally . Do you have any suggestions?
You say to under-water them due to root rot. But what about rain? Do I need to to store the pots under a larger tree on the back yard so they don’t get too much rain? Thanks!
If you live in an area that gets lots of rain that may help.. I think my mistake was being in the habit of watering every few days rather than checking the root balls to see if they actually needed it..
sorry for the tardy reply, but yes, 559 could have gone straight into the ground. i put them all in pots as part of my master plan. which is, hopefully, to purchase a modest house on a few acres of rural land and create a massive camellia garden.
How fine/small should the pine bark mulch be? I rooted some camellias after watching your videos and potted them, but now I'm afraid the pine bark mulch I used is too coarse and the roots might die. Thanks!
this is what i've always used.. pine bark mulch from home depot.. not nuggets, or mini nuggets.. but mulch.. if yours looks similar to the mixture i used in the vid you should be fine.. www.homedepot.com/p/2-cu-ft-Pine-Bark-Mulch-363944/100350635
sorry for the tardy reply. the leaves on my cuttings do not usually wilt. the few that have did so as a result of my over watering which led to root rot.
thank you very much for this info, my aunt and I have been trying very unsuccessfully to root cuttings from her camellia bush, will definitely be giving this a try, do you know if this works for magnolia?
+Murugesh Darvin My only experience has been with air layering camellias and a few on my fig tree.. But, I would think the process would work on the plants you listed.. Only one way to find out.. Good Luck!!
The vast majority of air layerings that I've done over the years have been done in March/April.. And that part 1 was done on March 9, 2012.. Also, I don't wait 6 months anymore.. I cut them off around 3 months and that's been working fine..
We are looking to add a large variety of Camellia's to our southern plantation. Do you sell Camellia's or can you refer us to a wholesaler? We are located just west of Perry in Marshallville. We would love to talk with you. www.grandmagnoliahouse.com
+Tamara Joiner Hello Grand Magnolia House.. I do not sell Camellias but can refer you to a local wholesale nursery here in Savannah that does.. Gene's Nursery aka Camellia Shop.. The owners of this nursery came to my home a few years ago in an effort to identify some of my many previously unidentified camellia varieties.. Hope this helps, Good Luck with your garden expansion.. Here's a link to their site: camelliashop.com/our-company/
Your first video showed you marking the plant 553, not 559.

sorry for the tardy reply, but yes, 559 could have gone straight into the ground. i put them all in pots as part of my master plan. which is, hopefully, to purchase a modest house on a few acres of rural land and create a massive camellia garden.

did you get any wilting leaves after you cut it from the main plant and if so how long did it last?
sorry for the tardy reply. the leaves on my cuttings do not usually wilt. the few that have did so as a result of my over watering which led to root rot.
Nice I will try this!
thank you very much for this info, my aunt and I have been trying very unsuccessfully to root cuttings from her camellia bush, will definitely be giving this a try, do you know if this works for magnolia?
I don't know from experience but yes, air layering should work for your magnolia: homeguides.sfgate.com/clone-magnoila-tree-45826.html

How thick can the branch be for the air-layering?
Can anyone tell me how low temperatures the root balls can stand without damage while still on the tree?
I've always done mine in late winter/early spring.. And I'm in S/E Georgia USA.. So coldest temps for mine would be in the 40's
5:1 ratio of pine bark mulch to sand in terms of weight or volume?
late reply but, volume..
What time of year in video 1 do you start air layering
The vast majority of air layerings that I've done over the years have been done in March/April.. And that part 1 was done on March 9, 2012.. Also, I don't wait 6 months anymore.. I cut them off around 3 months and that's been working fine..
