Is there any reason why LMA couldn't be used in a surgery? Any reason an endotracheal tube would be preferable or required? Is LMA only for short operations?

Great question. LMA can be used for lower risk, fasted patients for shorter operations. It will ventilate most patients well, but it won't protect the airway, so isn't appropriate for a case like emergency laparotomy where there is high risk of aspiration.
