I went to Scotland in Summer and it was freezing so I can't imagine what it would have been like in winter! My father in law is Scottish, he lives in Australia and boasts to his F&F in Scotland every Summer by uploading a pic of him in the pool on FB lols. Because he knows how cold it is there!
This is exactly why it’s so depressing living in Northern Europe in winter! We all play dress up at home and try on our spring clothes hoping it’ll get warmer soon! So bored at this point of wearing parka jackets and sensible shoes. We still have at least another month of winter though, it’s still pretty cold now… Allbirds mizzles are actually great - keeps your feel warm, water resistant and lightweight if you need a travel / causal footwear option if you’re back in the winter!
I find it’s so funny and endearing how afraid you were of the cold 🥶 I am from Denmark and now live in Sweden and I would go out when I was in my 20s in barely any clothes in snow and -10 😅 on the other hand I can’t handle heat
Ah God love ya Caitlin, there’s your man in his itty bitty sneaker socks & bare ankles then you all bundled up like a furry womble 😂. Your holiday looked good - Edinburgh is such a great city! Thanks for sharing what did and didn’t work for you. I have a friend (just the one 😆) who also wears her Uniqlo thermals under her clothes while working from home in our Aussie winters. Got my eye on those Bogner boots for when I visit family in Canada. Love the grippy thingy.
I love this video, especially as a South African who moved to Europe 20 years ago. I also loved the aesthetic of my YSL Nikki bag in crinkled leather, but unfortunately the corners have worn really really badly and I hardly wear her at all any more..
you can get that repaired. Take it to a bag spa but one that specialises in proper repairs, not just juzz-ing up bags with a bit of cream renovating stuff. There will be no problem fixing the edges. IMO
I didnt realise this until I heard a UK fashion youtuber say it but those Hermes boots are kind of considered "fashion boots" in cold countries and a lot of people dont wear them when its genuinley cold. But they're pretty standard in AUS.
I went to the European continent in the winter and lucky for me, it was such a mild winter it hardly even snowed! I had next to zero idea how to dress for the cold and I woudln't have survived snow and ice. it was amazingly easy for me and I am still realising what a fluke it was! I thought I was really clever wearing synthetic long johns under jeans....Those boots with the flip feature underneath were a WOW moment for me. OMG lucky escape for this naive Australian!
Uniqlo thermals are not bad but merino thermals are so much better (as long as it is 100% wool and has the highest density). Icebreaker has nice ones and they saved me in blizzard-y NYC last winter. Also the cool thing with merino- you can sweat a lot and it doesn't smell. Just air it out overnight and it is like new the next morning. :). Loved seeing all your travel photos (Italy will always be one of my fav. countries haha), it looked like such a fun trip.
Preach! I cannot wear anything on my shoulders for long periods of time. It is uncomfortable and hurts after long periods of time, the only thing I can handle are bum bags (not sure why?). Same goes for headbands, hair ties, and hats. I have poor circulation and I find these items add pressure to my areas of my body that cannot handle it.
I have the exact same issues, I live in western Norway which is not that cold but very windy and rainy. It is uncomfortable to wear a heavy jacket, a chunky scarf, and a crossbody bag, so mine has a really long strap, so it doesn't suffocate me. Also, because it is cold, I usually have some neck tension, seems like I subconsciously hunch ( is it a proper word?) So I won't feel the cold wind.
The thing with the coat, the scarf and the bag happen to me every winter in NYC! It's weight that you're carrying and it doesn't feel as much in the begging but it adds up!
Awe Flynny 😍. Such a helpful video for those of us who only understand tropical & sub-tropical climates. It’s going to be hilarious when I finally go somewhere where it’s actually cold. The coldest I’ve ever been is Melbourne in the middle of winter (& I thought that was freezing)…
Coming from the UK to Melbourne I got by on a chunky cardigan for ages. It’s only these past 3-4 years I’ve actually felt cold enough to wear a short coat in winter and I’ve been here about 18 years. Maybe I’m an anomaly? 🤔
It was just like us last month in Paris! We’re new to winter hence we were all covered. However, thermals became my bestfriend and I was able to wear dresses and skirts with the fleece lined fake leg looking leggings. Wore thick socks for my boots but still chafed the hell out of my ankles. Also, bag I wore was the Toy Loulou, hands down the best travel companion for me.
I know that you’ve switched over to commentary style videos, but I’d love for you to do some updates about what luxury ideas you have are still holding up well and which ones haven’t. I did not have a shopping phase in my 20s, I was a broke single mom so I mostly had hand me downs or whatever I could find at thrift store. Now I’m in my thirties and married and want to purchase some timeless pieces that I’ve always dreamed about that hopefully will last long term.
Yes I have to say I worried a bit about Caitlin when she was deep in her consumerist phase, but it's all worked out so well! Very happy for her especially finding a great guy!
I was wondering how everything you packed worked out. I’m surprised the hand warmer thing didn’t work for you. I used them when hiking in -10 c and they made a difference. I’m sorry to hear you got sick. I hope it didn’t last long. Loved this update. Take care. 😘 to Flynnie.
@@CaitlinPawlowski I did, immensely. I loved all the outfits you planned for your trip and it was great to hear how they worked for you. I will be purchasing the shearling gloves and thermals based on your recommendations :)
I laughed a lot, because I’m like you 😂 winter here in Australia, I wear gloves during day while working, I have 2 pairs of ugh boots which I exclusively wear only in the house. Plus millions of layers 😂
Maybe you could try a snood/infinity scarf instead of a regular scarf? There’s less fabric so it would be lighter. Uniqlo usually bring this item out in winter, as part of the heattech range
Your boots are probably too small. I live in Canada, and usually buy a half size or full size bigger because if the boots are too tight it makes your feet feel colder.
So nice to see this video! I was wondering how did you find wearing those outfits you planned. As someone who lives in England and comes from Italy, I was surprised you were bringing Hermes ankle boots with heels, knowing that we have a lot of walking to do in our daily lives, especially when you are visiting. I have some heels, but it is for occasions as you said like Xmas. I am also glad you went ahead with uniqlo thermals and warm beanies. I can't wear anything else in winter to keep my head warm, but beanies, especially for those windy cold days where you can't wear a nice hat, as it will be flying away. Something I would like to share with you, if you happen to go to north of italy in December don't expect to find the same weather as you did in Naples. Temperatures there are really cold, sometimes colder than England, especially for the cities near the Alps and Dolomites 😘😘😘 I can't wait to see what other trips you plan for 2023!!!
Hey Caitlin! I've just received the Bogner Moritz boots - I bought them based on your recommendation, as I'm moving back to the UK from Aus next month :) they are so beautiful (I got the white ones). I got them in a 39 (my usual size) but they feel very big around my ankle! I do have narrow feet so that might be why. Did you have to wear very thick socks with them? Or get heel grips? They were expensive for me, so I'm a bit worried about how comfy they will be to wear... But the size down (38.5) is now out of stock.
I wear very thick socks! So I find that helps I also wear my orthotics sometimes instead of the lining inside so I think sometimes that makes a difference xx I wanted to go a bit looser than too tight Incase I used thick socks or those feet warmers you put in side your shoes because I get very cold feet but I think it’s a personal preference I definitely debated about the sizes for a while and even bought multiple sizes to decide between I had to buy them from seperate websites because similar happened to me they were out of stock xx
@CaitlinPawlowski Ah that makes sense re thick socks! They are such beautiful boots. I also get so cold, especially my hands and feet, but because I grew up in the uk I just accepted being cold. Now I'm older and focussing on self care. I think investing in warm shearling lined boots with those ice pins on the sole is actually a necessity and a health investment. Thank you!! 😊🫶
Did I hear you say you were gone 5 weeks? Maybe I misunderstood but that explains the amount of clothing prep. I thought you were gone a week or so. How was Finn while you were gone? I struggle to be away from dogs. Thank you for sharing your lovely vacation with us!
Great video, Caitlin! I was waiting to see how your travel outfits worked out. I'm travelling to New Zealand and Australia next month from the U.S. and am wondering how the weather will be there. I know you'll be heading into fall. Does it rain much in March? Should I dress for cool weather? Your input is much appreciated! XO
Looks like you had a fab time, learned some lessons on truly cold weather & best of all you didn’t return home with “blue tinged” Scottish paleness. Going boot hunting thx black ice is no fun to walk on. Great vlog Caitlin. Have a fab day. 😘💐
Women in Norway manage to go without nylon stockings and have thiny dresses or skirts and walking around with high heel shoes on ice while being drunk after a night out.....i never could tolerate cold or ice like that, ever * *
This is why the Brits have a reputation for dressing badly. I own a lot of classy gorgeous clothes but what I actually wear most of the year is Chelsea boots, socks, jeans and t shirt jumper layer plus a parka outside. Everything else is just not warm enough. I don’t wear my bags either as the coats have pockets and the bags don’t go with bulky coats. I moved to Singapore eight years ago and we can wear pretty clothes all day and night and bags are crucial.
What are you go to travel pieces? ✈️
Winter, a good high quality woolie & in summer my Tods especially beach or cruise trips
my fuchsia longchamp duffle barely fits in an overhead/carryon compartment in economy so thats my emergency in case they lose all my luggage bag😂❤

Definitely not climatized

Its so nice to see you in casual winter clothes, suits you 😍 Laughing at your description of the cold in Scotland though, its not antarctica 😂

I came to addd the same thing - the icebreaker thermals are life savers. I know I won’t be cold wearing them and you can wear them for days.
The boots are genius I would definately wear those here in England instead of of ice skating down my road when its icy ❤.

You can benefit from taking a muscle relaxer when you have tension that won’t release, like a Baclofen.
