I felt so sorry for Roberto Baggio. Without him I don't think Italy would have gone all the way to the final. He played phenomenally that year and scored five goals in total, and then he of all people would miss the penalty. He didn't deserve that.
What he didn't deserve was the way the media played it up that HE lost the final , when it was already over before his kick with the team having missed more than Brazil, even if he scored and the brazil player missed it would have been sudden death penalties , even worse .

I think he missed because he was carrying an injury from the semi-final, and the temperature was very high that day, and he had played for 120 minutes already, and he had the pressure of needing to score to stay in the World Cup final.

Yep, according to Wikipedia, it was 38 degrees Celsius (!) during the game. It was 22 Celsius in Qatar during the World Cup Final of 2022 for comparison, so you can imagine what an effect it must have had on the players in 1994. Crazy that they played the match at 3 in the afternoon.

I was graduating from university and my brother called me and said “hey, do you want to get World Cup tickets, they go on sale today“. I said “sure… but how much?” He said let me check. He called back and said $75 for the final in Pasadena. Uuuuh yes!!! Turned out to be a dream. Brazil and our beloved Italy made it to the final and we had tickets:-) To say the air is electric is an understatement. When the first goals were scored, the frenzy placed you in the present more real than life itself. First time I felt that. Skydiving second. :-) What a memory. My brother had an enormous Italian flag sewn in the garment district and we brought it in a duffel bag. Went to top of section and had each guy in the corners hold a corner and then my brother and I each with a corner ran down the stairs unfurling over our sections heads. The roar was so incredible that the players all turned to look. I came looking for full game. What an incredible once in a lifetime experience. Only possible because it was held in the US when popularity was low and ticket sales dismal. Prices skyrocketed for final of course.
As a brazilian, this final is unforgettable for all of us too! I love italian football, the greatest european football team of all, really happy you guys were able to win in 2006 : ) Hope to see you guys on the next world cup, to me, a world cup without you guys is just not the same thing, força azzurri 🇮🇹❤🇧🇷

Baggio and Baresi were severally injured when they played this final. If they reached the final in normal physical conditions, Italy would have won. Baggio had been Injured for the whole world cup, but on this game pain reached its limit. Roberto Baggio has been with no doubt the best football player who ever lived together with Maradona, with the detail that Baggio was on Maradona'a level with just one knee. That Brazil was very strong anyway, and deserved to win the Cup.
@Paul Scholes yes, and he played his whole career like this. Now I ask myself, what kind of players would have been Baggio with a normal knee and Maradona without cocaine?
I remember how much I hated Del Piero because he took the place of Baggio in the Italian team. Later I hated Totti because he pushed Del Piero out of the team. The last authentic number 10 in football

If people remember that mondiale, it was one of the best in FIFA’s history!!! The games were all super and we enjoyed all, technically the teams back then were real and played seriously, and only the best in the world played. Coming up to the final game, both Brazil & Italy worked very hard before they reached this final and both were exhausted. So when they finally faced each other, they both deserved to be there, and both were at there acumen. This video shows that both goalkeepers were so adept they both saved their team. It was exhausting even to us tv spectators. I remember having flown to Hawaii on vacation and did not want to miss it at 3 am, and stayed up all night to watch it. Both teams teams played so hard and well and the game was clean and both were giants and deservedly so. Baggio got hurt several times and we expected him to be taken out but he (or his coach) insisted on going on, and it was natural that he took the final and decisive shot. I was very upset he didn’t score bec Italy up to that moment was the best team and we all expected them to win. But it was understood why such a giant missed the best opportunity he and his team had for glory. I’m surprised he was still able to stand up and walk. Football history to my knowledge did not see such giants. Many of them on both sides goofed at the moments when they should’ve scored, but exhaustion was the main factor for all this. And this game is etched in our memory forever not bec of so many missed great shots (Italy’s goalkeeper kissed the edge for saving an amazing goal-to-have-been). It was Brazil’s luck nothing else that made them win. Baggio has never been seen since then. That mondiale was Italy’s and should have won and it would’ve been their bestest best.
I am a Sri Lankan and came to know about the story of Roberto Baggio. Dann it must be a heartbreaking experience of having missed that penalty. Despite being being gifted footballer of his generation, he could hold onto the coveted cup. This just reminds me of a iconic incident in 1999 Cricket World Cup semi final between South Africa and Australia where a player called Allan Donald got run out after not realising that South Africa needed just one more run to win but with one wicket left. Allan Donald since then being thrashed by people in his country for that run out which cost South Africa the World Cup. Donald was insanely a talented fast bowler of his generation.
Putz... Eu sinto muito por isso... A companhei 2 vitórias .. nasci em 89 e qse ganhamos em 98... Bom era um sentimento maravilhoso! Infelizmente o futebol acabou, a seleção acabou ...

Both of them were the best players of that World Cup but I think the small slice of success and luck was summed up here on those both penalties.

It’s often forgotten Italy missed two other penalties in the final of 94. Even if Baggio had scored the next Brazilian would have won it. It’s also overlooked that Baggio played so well in the tournament he pretty much singlehandedly got Italy to the final. In the final he was injured (hamstring) and never should have played. The conspiracy part of the story is Baggio was made to play the final to keep the sponsors happy. The mysterious side of it is Baggio has said he had no idea how his penalty sailed over the bar, he has never been able to replicate it and said at the time of kicking it it felt right. His ratio of penalty conversions was around 85%, with the other 15% not being misses, but saves. Supposedly he never took one penalty during his career that went off target.

I was graduating from university and my brother called me and said “hey, do you want to get World Cup tickets, they go on sale today“. I said “sure… but how much?” He said let me check. He called back and said $75 for the final in Pasadena. Uuuuh yes!!! Turned out to be a dream. Brazil and our beloved Italy made it to the final and we had tickets:-)
To say the air is electric is an understatement.
I love italian football, the greatest european football team of all, really happy you guys were able to win in 2006 : )

John Locke agreed
@Paul Scholes yes, and he played his whole career like this. Now I ask myself, what kind of players would have been Baggio with a normal knee and Maradona without cocaine?

What a blistering final, hard to believe it ultimately ended up goalless, both keepers were on top of their game!

In terms of defensive play (Baresi & Paglicua); yes.
But 1986, 1974, 1970 & 1958 finals were all more interesting than a tactical stale mate.
I was 8 and 1994 was the First world Cup i remember have watched. It was pure magical. I was watching my First world Cup and my country played the final, but there was 24 years Brazil didn't Win this, so everybody was very excited about It. I remember seeing in the apartments from the building close to Mine lots of people in front of tv. When we had the penalties, most part of them were on their knees praying for the victory. This was one of the few times when people really cried for Italy particularly Roberto Baggio, Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini. One of the most stacked squad for Italy..Pagliuca, Maldini, Baresi, Albertini, Dino Baggio, Donadoni, Zola, top scorer Signori, Baggio.. though I'm a Brazil fan..this squad apart from Romario and Bebeto..the squad had hardly any magic, Rai was underwhelming..the midfield was full of destroyers, more like a British team instead of a Brazilian team.
