  • John Middlekauff opens up the 3 & Out mailbag discussing why former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is washed up and will he ever coach again? Plus, John dives into other NFL debates: Would a dual threat kicker work in the NFL? Will the Atlanta Falcons trade Kirk Cousins if Michael Penix Jr. shines and will they make the playoffs? Could QBs getting a leaner physique be better for arm strength, accuracy and consistency? Is Dak Prescott capable of leading the Dallas Cowboys to a Super Bowl?

Here’s the answer to the Kicker/Punter question.
99.9% of the time now, the punter is the holder for the FG operation.
It used to be the backup QB, but they switched it to the punter so he could spend more time on task & get more reps than the backup QB, who has to do QB stuff.
The specialists practice schedule is mostly isolated from the rest of the team.
Also, there are Punters who can FG kick, Pat McAfee was a FG kicker in college who also had the ability to punt, and switched to being a punter in the NFL because the Colts who drafted him had Adam Vinatieri, who was a little older, & a HOF, so McAfee did all the kickoffs because he had a strong leg, could onside kick and they weren’t exposing Vinatieri to potential injury trying to make a tackle on the kickoff.
I think most Kicker/punters can do either kicking or punting to some degree, but FG kicking is an entire operation, if your punter gets knocked out of the game, it can screw up your FG operation, because the emergency holder has to come in, & he probably only practices holding, during one practice period on Friday’s, if you’re lucky.
Having someone who can Punt & Kick at an elite level won’t save a roster spot, because FG kicking is an operation that REQUIRES ALL 3 specialists, Long Snapper, Holder, Kicker to do their jobs perfect to get an accurate field goal kicked in an insanely short amount of time.

The answer to both questions is NO. Unless Bill is willing to be a D coordinator, he's never getting a HC job in the NFL. Some of the mystique has washed off of him, Brady winning a title in Tampa created a very serious legacy issue that Bob Kraft was VERY irritated by. As far as he was concerned, Tampa got HIS trophy and Bill was the reason it happened.
Dak Prescott can get a SB title...but it will be as a backup QB, sort of like how Bernie Kosar got one with the Cowboys. Dak can't handle playoff pressure, it's that simple.

As a Cowboys fan, whilst wanting to agree with you, I think John made a good point. Dak has the TALENT to go on a 3 game spree. Now. He will most likely not do so. I'm rooting for Dak, but after this year, you gotta let him walk if he doesn't win the big game. Not "NFC championship", not "wild card". If he doesn't win the mf super bowl, he should be gone.

Why would Belichick be washed? I mean, he’s sub-.500 before Brady and after, he hasn’t drafted a top offensive skill player since 2010, thought Matt Patricia made sense as an OC, and his former owner complained Bill was an a-hole he was tired of putting up with. Why wouldn’t you want to hire him?
