I have noticed many people in the comments saying that school and today's scientific community are worse than in yesteryear, but I would like to pose a counter argument. I think that the schools and science of today are more active and revolutionary than before. We are just focusing primarily on different fields. There are still physicists, mathematicians, and engineers, and they are still curious. With the advent of the computer and the internet, people can learn more than ever. It is only that access to it has dulled people's hunger for knowledge and understanding, as they already have most everything everyone knows at their fingertips.

    • @Paraselene_Tao

I have a loosely general statement to make about science that kind of sidesteps your worry about people's disinterest in contemporary science.
It's my honest opinion that most of the "simple" science has been settled. When I say "simple", I mean science that can possibly be figured out by one, largely unaided, human mind. There's tons of science left to discover, but it is too "complex" for one, unaided, human mind to find the relationships. It seems like the rest of science wating to be discovered-"complex" science-requires 3 key elements: 1, entire ecosystems of statistical data analysis, simulations, and AI with the help of quantum supercomputers; 2, really expensive technologies (billions of 2022 USD) for key experiments; and 3, large teams of very highly trained specialists who are all being led by excellent management which recognizes how to properly manage many kinds of specialists.
I think the major problem with Science is that humans did not evolve to understand "simple" relationships in Science. Humanity had to work very hard and work over a very long time just to understand "simple" science relationships. Nowadays we're left trying to find "complex" scientific relationships that are so utterly alien from human minds that it's similar to understanding the mind of god or whatever nonsense. These relationships are powerful mysteries that will require humanity to evolve out of our primitive, ape-like brains. We will have to transcend higher to reach these complex relationships. Transhumanism is part of this picture too.
      -----
It seems that to earn a 4 year, undergraduate degree in STEM is a big task on its own. It trains the human mind to perceive the world differently, namely in a manner that's far more systematic, rational, and detailed. The funny thing is that after 4 years, we're still left at about the 1950's of science-maybe with little blotches of '80's science, and contemporary pedagogy.
An eight year postgraduate degree is neccesary to achieve an understanding of contemporary science. Most people do not have the time, the money, or the general resources necessary for this major achievement. Once we've earned this 8 year degree, then we can start handling the modern research. This is a lifelong journey, and the individual must be totally motivated to complete this mission.
For me, it's human longevity. I believe that each person ought to live as long as that person desires. In order for me to combat aging, I have to learn a lot more about the mechanistic systems around the human body. Have I got the motivation to do this research my entire life? I really don't know. I guess I'll find out.
Each individual will have to make this decision on their own. It's a hard path, but maybe it's the most rewarding path. The pathway of science is a really beautiful journey.

This is gonna sound shitty, but a large reason as to why the scientists from yesteryear had such groundbreaking studies and inventions was because so little of science was known by anyone. Many people in this comment section are saying modern scientists are "chasing money", but the reason behind this is because we've went from the Wright brothers building an aircraft out of cloth and planks, to a telescope that costs 59 million in fuel alone. My reason choosing commerce because i thought I am not compatible with science but deep down I love science but then we I realised i was doing something I wasn’t interested in, I regretted my choices and it cause me my future ( I always wanted to pursue engineering as my career) and now I’m clueless but still manageable. So, try harder guys!

You wanted to be an engineer, that's another thing.. but don't regret you decision Commerce is main reasons aur world is developing economically and socially.. in my opinion, every subject has its own fun! To learn! You know! Talking about Science! SCIENCE is a very very vast term.. not only as a subject.. it is a skill and way of thinking!! Everyone should have this skill! If you have interest in it.. you can buy some books on general science and theories.. I think Relativity is a thing which anyone can try to understand! "Theory of everything!" Is a nice book as well!! Basically you.. I mean aannnnyyyyyooonnnneee can study science not depending on their actual major subject!! You are gonna reach the skies mate!!
