I began plowing when I was 9. Drove a model R and John Deere 4 bottom plow. A few years later we bought a 4020. Then about 8 years later we bought a 4420. The R was most memorable.
Sure brings back memories it was hard to lug it down enough to kill it. When my dad went to the 4 cyl ended up killing it all the time at first no lugging power at all.
I always was partial to the old "Big Deere's" My father was a mechanic for John Deere when I was a kid. He brought home "R"'s Model 80 and model 830 to demo on his small farm sometimes.
Yes an insult to the R 3 plow 1/2 throttle in 2nd in stubble!!!! Joke she liked 5 in 3rd full bore all day and she wasn't smoking! We seeded 500 acres for 12 years with one on 4 plows packer and press! smoked in the grass patches
Fantastic great old machine laying down a real clean steady furrow, lots of experience and patience going into this plowing Seminar, watch and learn from a pro
working flat out, mate. Went straight from harvest to drilling rape to drilling first wheats. Long days. After next week we'll start lifting spuds, so it'll only be 12 hour days then. can't wait :) Been on the plough all week.... got a day off tomorrow... can you guess where i'm going?? 10 points if you guessed ploughing match :)
+steve ducell Thanks for your reply Steve. I spent two summers on an 820 for a relative of mine in the late 60's and it seemed to run at a higher rpm. At least that is what I remember. And maybe it did.I never put in any time on an "R" model. My brother has the '49 Moline U that we grew up on. He had it restored several years ago. I enjoy watching these old tractors still running.
Why do these people podger along on low throttle. Then he upped a gear which really overloaded, for what? Had he stayed in the original one and opened the throttle it would have stormed along with such a small plough. All for a sound bite. A really great tractor poor demonstrator, grey hair does not signify wisdom as some earlier comments imply..
Always a smart ass, the reason he didn't want to open the throttle was the field is full of big rocks, we just asked him if it would pull it in the next gear up
@@bufferbridge Smart Ass! Well may be your point of view but it doesn’t matter what gear you are in, rocks or not if the ground speed is the same. Others have raised this point. John Deere tractors have always had great torque back up and the diesel ones especially so but one would not use one in this way full time so why?? I grew up in the forties on a farm with four JDs all of which worked long hours for over twenty year with virtually no breakdowns or faults which might not have been the case if driven at low rpm as this one. Having spent a lifetime as an agricultural engineer and now in my eighties and at one time official demonstrator for Massey Ferguson I suppose I am entitled to have my opinion and ask a question. Nice to have a response but courtesy costs little. Calm down dear.

I used to cuss my dad when I looked in other fields and saw 4020s and 806s but now looking back I have fond memories of that green machine

Great video,...nice to see that the rear wheels were 'ballasted' for traction !
Have a restored 47 D pulling a 3 bottom JD trip plow, as a hobby..good time

Smooth a thing of beauty, very patient ,nice job my friend
Nice work , well done , most of these exhibitioners havent a clue about ploughing
Now that is the ideal set up!
It sounds to me like he only has the throttle about half open.

Brings back good memories. Almost impossible to lug it down .
Put something back there to make that R work. Good running tractor.
Three btm plough ...that the only plow they could find?
Fantastic great old machine laying down a real clean steady furrow, lots of experience and patience going into this plowing Seminar, watch and learn from a pro
personally, I can't see him doing 50 acres before supper.....
Good video.
What model plow/plough is that? I would love to have a 3-bottom for my JD 2150!!! Great video!!
I have been thought to plow the first run in oppositie direction, and then plow back the other way
I can’t wait till I have enough money to restore my R.

Nice,is that the new model deer John?lol
I had a jhondeere 1950 modle R
Is that the same as plowing?
Very tasty.
Pulling that 3 furrow with ease
Logan Adams tractors don't need to think they are machines.
I’ve seen the R pull six bottoms and not work too hard
give it a little gas
The R's always needed a gear in between the ones he uses here.... That was kind of their draw back...
Impressive low rpm lugging
That r dont even know its back there
That appears as very fertile soil, with sun and water crops would flourish there.
he plows just like the Amish they don't waist any space they plow rite up to the edge of roads hedge rows and woods
He could of used road gear with a three bottom my a pulls three 14 in four gear
Nice sounding R being operated by someone who knows what he's doing...
In this video it sounds like to me he doesn't have the throttle open very much & that
he is almost lugging the engine.
+Dick Short its a low rpm engine built for torque, not horsepower. thats the way they sound when running correctly.

+steve ducell Power is a function of torque.
John Deere R . Rated 1000 r.p.m.

Plowing, not ploughing
