I agree with you about the review videos having a significant impact.. I don't have a lot of money to throw around buying different products and testing them myself.. so I go straight to you tube for research and try for the best bang for my limited bucks.. Your vids have been particularly helpful on the subject of axes, their care and maintenance, and the best ones that my money can afford... Bahco is legendary for their small folding saws, and I might have bought from them an axe not even thinking twice about it, but your videos have taught me otherwise... I hope they are sincere in their efforts to fixing the quality issue with their axe/s.. thanks again..
I did send a short letter to them but did not receive anything back. I looking forward to seeing more about this.
Jason
As a quality assurance specialist, I can say that steel often goes through many hands before it get's the final manufacturer's facility. Certificates of conformance follow along but it's easy and a growing problem of counterfeit steels entering the supply chain. This steel is usually coming from china (especially stainless and aluminum), brazil, and even Pakistan. It's becoming more common for 3rd party lab testing, though I don't know if it's feasible for low-priced axe heads. FWIW
Thanks for your review wranglerstar, as you said, I ALWAYS COME TO RUclips before purchasing any tools, i came to you before purchasing my small forest axe and laplander folding saw, couldnt be happier with both of them btw, thanks again for the in depth review and i hope to see more
I think it's fantastic that you use the power of your subscribers for the betterment of these sorts of things. Too often do you see people badmouthing a gadget because it doesn't have the latest this or that. It makes me smile to think that so many people are still interested in these sorts of products, the ones that produce callouses, not texting addictions.
I love this experiment and really appreciate how they said they want to test the steel or something on your axe....this is a copy of my letter to Bahco......'' wranglerstar hatchet review
I'd wish to start by saying i've never had one of your products, but I'd love to see your company keep going and advance in sales one way i think this is possible is by making sure that your beautiful product can be used successfully ..and to do that i think you must reconsider the steel being used in your products ..ALL your products..!...with that said if you took your 20 dollar hatchet and made it a 35 or even 40 dollars product i'd buy one for sure assuming it can be trusted and used sucessfully for years to come ..i'd promote sales in my area and i live in the outskirts of new mexico in the mountains with many hundreds dare i say of local homesteaders much like myself ...I wish your cpmpany the best of luck..
thank you''.......@Wranglerstar..I have as yet heard back from Bahco but I'll keep you updated, thank you for all your good work...
Ivan
Wranglerstar, great video brother. This Bahco looks like, and seems to have acted the same as a Stihl woodsman axe I purchased a month ago. The edge bent to the side for about one inch of the sharpened cutting length, and the haft broke at the head. I took it back to the Stihl dealer here in Alamogordo, NM, and was given a replacement immediately. I love I'll retest the new axe this weekend and will update you and the Stihl dealer here upon my return.
They will lay sone blame on the way you sharpened it I'm sure. Just a funny feeling.
Thanks for thus series. I have learned a lot about axes, how companies respond to RUclips and reviews that don't test the products they use. If Bacco responds and makes a better axe, I will buy one even if the price us higher. Have to support good companies.
Nice job Cody, I enjoy your explanations and you are well able to articulate your thoughts.Keep up the good work.
I didn't get a respose either. I'm going to be buying a couple, one for me and one or two as a gift. Not sure what I'll be getting yet but not a Bahco at this point. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for some good used ones too and maybe just dress them up and make new handles. Thanks for the update.
GREAT comments and insight Cody... Well done!
What ever happened with Bahco resolving the axe issue?
you are on my top 10 list of RUclips
I cut down a 50' tree with an axe that I sharpened. my chainsaw quit running and no matter what I tried I could not fix it, and I am a pretty good mechanic.
Your videos inspired me to do it the old fashioned way. it was very dangerous but I did everything to be as safe as could be managed, also because you alway stress safety in your videos, you are a swell guy and include Christian morals and values.
I think this was a great way to inform Bahco of the issues and it sounds like they will be proactive about investigating the problem. Any company that truly cares about their products will seek to better them and improve. As companies like Bahco often cater to small independent customers like us.
I sent a comment to Bahco, since I have used their products in the past and been happy. I would have been upset with that product - if it can't handle green softwood like that, imagine how badly it would have failed on some decent eucalyptus trees here in Australia!
I'm a bit underwhelmed by the response. I appreciate that they were willing to reach out to you. What I would expect from a company with Bahco's reputation is that they would launch review of the product and take sourcing actions to improve it. My guess would be that they source this from a chinese factory whose first articles were of a much harder steel, but then actual production units were made from a cheaper process.
Really nice video- sadly your axe aint the only crappy one here in denmark they are dumping same toolline and hope folks dont complain
greetings from denmark and Godt Nytår to mrs wranglerstar (danish/swedish for happy newyear )
I had another thought Wranglerstar. I think the best value 'quality' inexpensive axes come from Hultafors of Sweden under the name 'Hults Bruk' ('Hults Forge', since 1697) which they market here in the UK and most of Western Europe. I have two of their axes from the Agdor range, a 17" 800g and a 19" 900g. They are superb quality with a genuine hickory handle for around $50 each and their makers tag, which comes with the axe, states:-
'Our axes are made of consistently high quality Swedish axe steel, and not scrap steel like cheap axes from the Far East. Our axes have a clear and shiny finished hardening zone where the axe can be sharpened and re-shaped without detracting from the strength of the axe. Our axes are hand forged, which is a costly process but ensures the density and durability of the axe. There are very few manufacturers left in the world with craftsmen who still command this technique.Used correctly, our axes will last for generations. Lifetime guaranteed against manufacturing defects in the axe head'.
Beat that and check them out at www.hultafors.com. Most popular axe purchased by Swedes themselves. That should tell you a lot buddy!
I really enjoyed your comments and review. The corporate interest did exactly as expected and not a bit more.
I've watched your channel for many months an can appreciate what you are doing, more power to you an people like you, regards also to your son an wife
Hi cody! :) I would like in behalf of Bacho to say that they are not that known for their axes overall. Bacho is however one of europes best manufacturer of Tools. Their old tools is top quality. I have some old tools from bacho and also an old Swedish company called EA BERG. They are the best quiality of tools I have ever used. 50-60 years old tools but alot better then the things today.
I would love to see you get your hands on some old Ea bergs eskilstuna Files. They are extremely good! :D
I know its been awhile, and I wouldn't buy a Bahco without hearing if they improved their steel, but its interesting everywhere I see them, their prices have been slashed from MSRP. Just saw the 16in hatchet with a MSRP of $47, marked down to $27. That's the absolute best thing about RUclips. It doesn't matter what I'm looking for....someone has reviewed it somewhere. I certainly hope that review impacted the quality of these axes, but I doubt it, and I'm gonna freakin pass. Thanks for the really honest review buddy.
Hey Cody thanks, this is kind of fun, and who knows we may just get results! I got a response back much like the second letter you wrote from the same fellow. It seems that if they are smart and reasonable they might just change their steel. Stay tuned!!!!!
that is super awesome that these people are contacting you. in my opinion it can only be a good thing in the future. maybe product testing ect.!
I bought one of these when they were still made by Sandvic some 15 years ago. I put a 19"handle on it and I really like it for backpacking/general chores.
After reading a lot of the comments I think it was a good start from Bahco. Customer service can be really bad with a lot of companies especially the larger ones. So two emails from people who actually put their names to them is a great start. I have had bad service ( read no replies at all) from big companies. One that comes to mind is Garmin. I had a handheld GPS that I cracked the screen on. The GPS still worked but I couldn't see 2/3 of the screen. I asked a simple question, can it be repaired as we have very few places in Australia that work with this technology especially in Northern Australia. Another was Friskars. I bought a weeding tool that pulls the weeds out of the lawn like a plug. My wife bent it the first time she used it. She's no weight lifter but our ground is very hard. My understanding is Bahco is one of the reputable companies when it comes to tools. Could it be that the axe was tested on European wood which may be softer and therefore the fault wasn't detected? I'm very wary of buying axes or any woodworking tools like saws from overseas based companies because of the fact that most of our native timbre is hard wood. They don't call it Iron Bark for no reason. So could that be an underlying factor? I'm no expert and definitely not a metallurgist. But two replies is a good start and at least we know that they have acknowledged the fact and offered a solution of sorts.
I LOVE YOUR REVIEW VIDEOS THEY ARE SO HONEST AND ALWAYS SEEM TO BRING OUT THE BEST IN COMPANIES
Bahco has been a quality driven company in my experience, at least when they were part of the SANDVIK family. I was happy to see the reply from the Quality Assurance dept. I think since they were purchased by Snap-On tools it is hard to say what sort of real customer service you will get on this.
Can you meassure the edge angle you sharpened on the bahco and compare it with the gränsfors axe? Would be a fair meassure.
Dear Mr or Mrs,
I have watched wranglerstar's review of your axe under 20 dollars. I was surprised by the qualities of your axe in the beginning as cody seemed to give a very positive review on materials, shape, size, weight.... etc.
But then came the actual test after sharpenning..... which was, i think sadly quite catastrophic.
I wanted to know if you would, as an importnat tools manufacturing company, be willing to make a quality axe or hatchet (for a higher price of course) but just a tool that would last, that we would be satisfied with, eager to use and especially that we could pass on to our kids and grandkids.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Thnak you very much,
Victor Beley

I am rehanging the same model of Bahco hatchet I bought 4 or 5 years ago. Funny thing, the steel rings like a bell when struck with another piece of metal, a sign of good quality steel they say. True, it has never been sharpened properly and given a chance to show if a fine edge would roll or not, but has been abused a bit in the garden, breaking up furniture and so forth, and has held up fairly well.....could be that there is a wide variety of quality (sure a very bad thing, even for a relatively cheap product)....????
This will be interesting, thanks for the Bahco review & report on their customer service thus far...
Thanks for the feedback, Cody. I haven't heard from Bahco personally, but I'm not concerned. The fact that they have responded to your review is evidence enough that we have their attention and I have to believe it's because we flooded Bahco's site with our comments.
Well said regarding the "testing" or reviewing of products without having much use with them. So many people on youtube these days seem to share their thoughts during their honeymoon period with item only to end up eating their words at a later date. off camera.
So, what happened with the Bahco axe Cody? Did they ever replace it?
will be interesting to see if they find anything wrong in their 'lab'. Good of them to respond though.
I also contacted them using their website, and got a email from them saying they would be in touch with me later. I also used the link you gave to their youtube site. I really am interested in how this will work out.
Glad to have these updates on older videos
I've been researching axes with a view to getting a small axe for spoon carving. Here in South Africa the Bahco is the _cheapest_ axe you can get at R177 - that was enough to put me off.
No response yet. I wrote them telling them that I've always found the heat treat in their files and saw blades to be perfection, and was very surprised that their otherwise well designed axe was so soft. I said I hoped they would resolve it so I could purchase with confidence in the future.
Best of luck! I wonder how it'll go. But I still feel very skeptical. The letters seemed a bit shady. Why would they need to do "laboratory" tests on specific YOUR axe when it'll probably be no different than grabbing one from any of their retailers? Who know? Their words just didn't feel honest. Also, can you imagine what changes they'll have to make to get the job done properly? I've seen more than a couple Bahco axe "fails" during reviews. But, yes, I do hope for the best that they stop producing garbage product and that our voices actually influence that change.
Some years ago a danish bike light got glowing design reviews, only later to fail miserably in tests as no-one had had the idea of seeing if the thing performed as a light/lamp....
This was the response to my email...which I will post next.....
Thank you very much for taking the time to contact us with your comments on the Bahco axe recently reviewed on Wranglerstar.
Your input is important to us and we will look into this matter as quickly as possible.

Come on, I understand the disappointment in buying a product and it being less than expected- but... It's a $20 dollar axe? I wouldn't expect quality from a low priced, european made product ^_^ Good video, looking forward for another update.
I sent them an email, but no response yet. Though I am glad you got them Mr. Wranglerstar. It speaks well of them.
I am hoping that you get a positive response from then and not a negative on further contact with BAHCO.
I liked the first letter! I look forward to what their research department finds. I asked them how much more a hatchet would cost with a higher grade of steel and referenced the Wranglerstar review (a picture is worth a thousand words...). I am going to go out on a limb and predict that they will point to the sharpening as some how reducing the stability of the axe head. They have not responded directly to my inquiry and I doubt if they will!
Here in the UK i bought several of these little hatchets by Bahco from a huge tool supply company here, They were under £16 delivered so good value. But.... the first two axes had the wrong grain orientation on the handle, so i complained only to be told they are correct handles, obviously the person i spoke to was clueless so i returned them to be exchanged only to receive two more with bad handles! you would think grain orientation would be correct due to quality control. i guess not.
I'm glad to hear you have got a response from Bohco but there has been not reply to my E-Mail i sent off.
Thanks for the feed back.. As for me no feedback from Bahco
Hi Cody, great video series - so very true about wanting to find good value tools, even if that means a higher price point. That being said, I would recommend the Bahco 36" bowsaw, which is very cheap. Recently bought one and fitted the raker teeth blade - it makes such light work of anything 6" or smaller. Perhaps a comparison between your crosscut saws and the bowsaw at some point? :) Many thanks for the content.
I predict a Wranglerstar edition made by Bahco... I will buy one.. or maybe 2.
Or you need to get a kick-starter going for your own line of Axe's.. Since we can't seem to get a "Proper Axe" anywhere else.. You got Benchmade and KAI right in your backyard..
loving your work Wranglerstar, all power to you.. however, for all of us that have recently discovered your channel, and are working our way through the youtube sidebar, could you please number your posts. Some you do and some you dont like these updates......in all other ways great work !
Fantastic news that Bahco responded, even if they sort out the steel/tempering problem on said axe, what will they do with all the faulty ones?
I also have not received a response back from Bahco, but I requested that they answer back to you specifically, so that makes sense to me. I like that they got back with you, but I would have liked to seen an exchange offered by them.
the problem is solved. just harden the ax and it becomes excellent. a nice sharpening and then you will see that it will work better than a high quality one.
I love the videos in school Monday or last week we watched a video of you and your wild land fire video in class
Bahco is a Swedish brand within the hand tool industry, which is now part of the Snap-on owned company, SNA Europe.
Just wondering if you ever have looked into the Cold Steel Trail Boss? I see it lists for $34.99 from smokey mountain and seems built well. Hickory handle, 2 lb. head. I'm sure this tool has been brought to you're attention before. Lately I follow all of your videos and enjoy them greatly. Thanks.
Hopefully they fix the problem. I love the axe's design!
If I were to Own a major company, such as bacho, and something like this has happened. I would send a rep out in person, to pick up the axe, supply some other tools for review, and work with wrangler star. Then evaluate quality control issues.
I wrote to them but did not receive a response. Your response was enough for me because I think we have struck a nerve.
Very interesting update:)
vaughan axes and hatchets are slightly more expensive around 25 or 30 dollars and are way better check them out wrangler star. My grandfather used their axes and hammer and so do I. They are American made and excellent.
Any news on this? Did you send it back?
I actually just restored a bacho axe that is well over 2 decades old. Its one of the larger models but it 4seems it to be of that famous swedish quality. It even has a makers mark or what looks like it anyhow. It would be nice to know if this is what to expect from bacho these days or if this an isolated incident. As is, it performs much worse than my €5 Biltema and I find that unlikely.
Great update, unfortunately I have not heard anything back from Bahco
bahco is owned by snap on ...
so it should have a good waranty
also they make great adjustable wrenches ...
Cody there is a hardware story in seattle that sells there products ...
Ballard hardware
I would be interested to see what would happen if you took the original, cheap axe, and quenched, then tempered the blade so the metal is a bit harder, but still ductile enough that it doesn't chip like crazy. Yes, it's more labor, but sometimes sweat equity is easier to come by than cash equity. Heat treating steel goes a long way, I hear...
Very interesting.... I have not heard anything back from them yet.
Just received this from them
Bahco
Dear yabamaba,
Thank you for your feedback regarding the review of the Bahco hatchet made by
Wranglestar. Sorry for the delay in the
response due to the high affluence of messages received over the last few
days.
We have contacted Wranglestar and will investigate the product in order to
assess possible needs of improvement and feasibility for product development.
Thanks and best regards,

That's a good sun hat. You know it's hot in the pacific NW this time of year! Watch the Wranglestar channel in 50 years and you'll see the payoff wearing such a hat! :)
It's hard to believe any company would sell an axe made out of suitable materials for $17. At that price point, to make even a meager profit, they have to settle for using the cheapest parts. This includes obviously the cheapest steel. They knew that the softness would be discovered.
Now what little I understand of metallurgy is that in order to have a suitable blade which stays sharp & cuts well, an axe would have to use higher carbon steel. Tempering soft steel is no substitute for higher carbon steel like that which is used in quality axes.
So they will have to change to a more suitable carbon content steel if they want to produce a quality axe. Can they do it for under $40, Cody's price point?
hey Codey another great video . With regard to the steel quality .y Bahco must know they are using soft steel in their axes .I think they are running scared because of your popularity on you tube and your large number of viewers and subscribers .
Great video Wranglerstar!
Polite letter sent, but no response to this point. I suggested (and meant) that I would be willing to purchase a higher-quality axe (I'd like to add one to my pack -- I have a Fiskars hatchet but my son "borrowed" it.) if it were in the $50-60 range.
@wranglerstar in older times when bacho was B.A Hjort & co and not sold to sandvik , they had a liftime warrenty !! on everythin!! and it worked ! tryed it myself a cuple o times , but now they sold out and tho their things work good(usually) its not under same qualety enymore, sadly,BUT nice of them to contact u ad show some interrest!!..
I heat treated my bahco hatchet before I reprofiled it, seemed to help alot! Be interesting to see what they have to say.
I sent Bahco a comment on the quality of their axe and haven't heard anything back either. It's a shame cause people really seem to be looking for quality more so now than 5-10 years ago. I always look for tools that will last being used on a regular basis.
Bahco laboratory: Forest.
Cody, is Bahco proposing to replace the ax you send into them for analysis and research? It seems pretty poor of them to ask you to send in their defective product without some type of compensation (i.e. replacement ax or a return of the money used to purchase the ax (I know this is not your ax, but someone else's who lent it to you for a review)).
If you were not going to send the axe away for testing then I wonder if it would be possible to re-temper it?
It seems to me that the responses are sorda generic and just general to make it seem like they care. But i could be wrong, i'll have to wait and see.
No reply to my message. In my fantasy world, where good people stand up and do the right thing, here is the response I'd like to see:
"Dear Zerkbern,
Thank you so much for taking the time to contact us about this axe. I was pressured by my service department to reply with a standard 'sorry about that' response. The truth is; you called us out and you were right to do so.
We made this axe to hit a low price point. We used a design we knew to be good and had quality handles made. The problem was, good steel on the head would have added $20 to the price and we wanted to hit the under 20 mark. My marketing department convinced me that people didn't expect quality at this price and that the steel would 'look good' and people would buy it.
I am sorry to say that the dollar signs outweighed my good judgement.
I have directed my development team to redesign this axe and include quality steel. We are already well under way. We think we can sell it for under $35 if we leave it unsharpened (as we think the intended market is fine with this if it saves them money).
I wish I could recall all of the axes and remake them, but my responsibility to profitability precludes that. We will, however, be reissuing the redesigned axe as the founding father of our new "Bacho Pride" line.
When we begin to offer the axe I will let you know and send your a coupon for half off.
Thanks again,
Mr. So and So
President
Bacho Tools"
I haven't heard anything from Bahco. However I would love to hear your thoughts on that Husqvarna carpenters axe.
Nice video, been watching your channel for a while. Here is my opinion: RUclips give the viewer the right to express their opinion freely, but when it comes down to "I want to change/improve something by using RUclips power" is really not that effective. One example is Harbor Freight tools, you can google hundreds Harbor Freight tool reviews, and half of them are negative reviews, people try to show how bad HF tool qualities are, but does HF cares? Are they gonna change/improve anything? I doubt it. But why does HF success? Because the market, there is market for the "low price tools", people need occasional use tools. If anyone use their tools for living, they may purchase from Snap-On. Same idea, if anyone use their axe for day-to-day work, they may purchase a hundred dollar axe, but that 20 bucks axe, trust me, they have market with that kind of quality. And I'm sure Bahco has more expensive axe with better quality, but that's for other segment of consumers. At the end of the day, big corporation need to make money, and you pay for what you get.
Again, nice video as always.
When you send the axe to them, they will probably blame the poor performance of the blade on the linseed oil you used on the handle. LOL Their adjustable wrenches are sturdy and work well. I make a living with adjustable wrenches.
Best axes and wood working tools come from Djarv in Sweden.
Hand forged, hand made quality.
If you want a good axe, then Djarv in Sweden is the best.
i don't know anything about the axes they produce. i was disappointed by the quality. i work at construction and we buy the bahco hand saws all the time. we get them for 15.00 ,its razor sharp and hold its edge for a long time. i watch your videos all the time.
What about replacing the JUNK Ax with NEW ONE seems that should be somewhere in the fine print.
Could just be a one off thing. Any way to get another ax from a different store and test it?
I didn't hear from them but, didn't really expect to. I question how authentic/sincere the responses were from Bahco. The second one was clearly just some generic response and the first one wasn't far from that. Also, why would you have to send your axe back to them for "testing"? I would think that they would have tested the product before they shipped them out for people to buy. In my mind, one of two things is going on here: either Bahco doesn't know how to make an axe and therefore should not be selling axes or Bahco just doesn't care what type of product they are putting out and again, should not be selling axes.
It looked to me like they just never bothered to heat treat it properly. Which I imagine would safe some serious money. Maybe you should try tempering it?
fun fact good and proper processed steel is very cost effective while cheap steel is a money costly maybe bahco can learn from this lesson from the consumer
Jump on the Husqvarna brand while it is still affordable. I can see it climbing in price with popularity. They are basically Gransfors axes at half the price.
im liking where this is going.
The only place this is gong is under the rug. You can't make a quality axe for anywhere near this price. Quality forged/carbon/tool steel costs more than the product. They know its a piece of junk. That's why it is not sharpened past that of a splitting wedge bluntness for very good reasons. They just made it look like a good axe. Go take a look at the prices of quality tool, forged and carbon steel blanks that aren't even ground to profile yet. it's all about the steel.
***** You may be right, but it will be interesting to see how they handle this.Good or bad,we will soon see their true colors.
Mr. Wranglerstar, I have watched many of you're axe videos and truly enjoy them. I am planning to purchase a new splitting maul soon and wonder if you could make a recommendation on one. I am considering Husqvarna, but not settled on it. Any input would be appreciated.
That's one bad hat, Harry.
So I'm not the only one that noticed! For some reason, when I saw Cody wearing that hat, I had this weird flashback of picking watermelons in a field in Mexico.
I also sent a letter to Bahco and have not received anything back. Perhaps we will as a group can get something done.
they replied faster than I expected
