    The most astounding thing I've learned about the pineapple is that it's a bromeliad, a very interesting sort of plant that doesn't need roots to sustain itself. While not at all parasitic, they can grow in trees, rocks, crappy soil, anywhere their leaves can catch and hold water.

    • @ezekielmartin4323
      @ezekielmartin4323 2 года назад +47

      Yep! These plants are known as _epiphytes,_ and they're not limited to bromeliads (which also aren't all epiphytic but mostly are)! I'm sure there's a long list, but off the top of my head, a lot of orchids are also epiphytic, and I believe there are also epiphytic ferns. Also, epiphytic bromeliads are highly diverse; some look like pineapple plants, but Spanish moss is one too!
      Epiphytic plants have what are known as _aerial_ roots, which are a type of root that's not designed to burrow in soil, but rather to cling to objects in the open air. They do this in part using a protective skin called a velamen.
      They're also a kind of adventitious root, which basically means they aren't real roots. They're made from shoot tissue, more similar to stems than actual roots.

    It's worth noting that canned pineapple and fruit cup pineapple has been heat treated such that the bromelain no longer functions. It's only *fresh* pineapple that eats you back.
    This distinction is also why you can't use fresh pineapple with jello, the bromelain just slices up the gelatin, but canned works fine.

Idk just hypothesising 🤔
