The North Koreans, having heard of the Mao bust, and in a bid not to be outdone, claim Dear Leader King II Sung climbed the Kangshung Face and chiseled a bust of himself while on the summit before ultimately opting to descend by swan diving down to the Kangshung Glacier, where he mitigated the impact by ending the 11,000 foot free-fall with a perfect forward roll, a flawless dismount….oh, and all without oxygen of course.

The climbers face another danger on their journey ; the"Wild Yeti ". Sometime, it would be very interesting if you created a a piece about closed-circuit oxygen systems on Everest. Bourdillon and Evans apparently came very close to beating Hillary and Tenzing using closed-end apparatuses in 1953 and apparently their use was contemplated as early as 1938, but I've never heard of anyone using closed-end equipment since 1953. I'm surprised that no one has at least attempted this in all the years since. Small but interesting detail I remembered and found again today. Seven years ago, Jake Norton posted a video of himself rummaging through the 1960 high camp for the Chinese at roughly 28,000ft.
    1:33 into the video, he shows some items on the ground and amongst the items is a small rock hammer and a carabiner. He pays little attention to the hammer at the time. However, I think it would’ve been a cool artifact to have (especially since he seems so keen on collecting items from the mountain). Secondly, I can’t recall many climbers talking about carabiners on Everest? Do you know if that was possibly used to tie onto a rope on the way up and down? Or perhaps they used them at the second step somehow?
    Also he found an O2 bottle with “gas” in it still. Wonder why the heroes left that behind, especially after running out on the victorious climb?

      It’s unclear if that was truly the case. There’s no reason to believe they knew this would be their last attempt. It appears that, upon seeing their cooker had been blown out of high camp, their goal was simply to fix the rope up the Second Step and conduct a brief reconnaissance above it. They would then return and leave the actual summit push to others-other climbers were available. If this had been a true summit attempt, support climbers would have come up to replace the cooker and bring them water. They could have sent someone down to Camp 6 to retrieve the cooker, brought it up to melt snow in Camp 7, and prepared accordingly. The fact that this wasn’t done strongly suggests there was no intention to summit.
      It seems that the decision to claim a "summit" was made only after they returned to North Col, and I am skeptical of their story about it taking so many days to return to North Col.
      Their actions are also inconsistent with a genuine summit plan. It would make no sense to send four people to the summit with such limited oxygen. A more sensible approach would have been for two climbers to fix the rope on the Second Step, then leave all the remaining oxygen for the final two. The two support climbers could have returned to high camp, brought up additional oxygen, and cached it at the Second Step for use on the descent.
      Most likely, the incentive to summit was a significant factor, and they may have devised a plan to achieve it. However, that plan was never executed for whatever reason, and they ultimately decided to rely on propaganda rather than photographs.

      First, they would have had to have lied about their oxygen systems capabilities and actually had a system that allowed them have 36 hours of oxygen, or If they lied about it being night and they lied about not having photos too, I guess they could have made the summit. But with oxygen and water, they still have the problem of getting to summit at night and returning with absolutely no one seeing them or photographing them from below. Also, they would have had to pick up rocks from the Thrombolite layer and lie about them being from the summit.
      In any case, the Chinese also claim to have reached the summit in 1969 by three solo climbers -- they each climbed separately, without oxygen. And for some reason, people are not pushing this equally ridiculous claim.

Flash cubes ('Magicubes') became available around 1960, so again, maybe the Chinese just couldn't get their hands on some. (These were roughly 1 inch plastic cubes containing 4 small flash bulbs. Described in detail in Webster's book "Snow in the Kingdom" (2000) where he along with three others pioneered a utterly daring climb up the Kangshung Face (in 1988) to reach the South Col and then take the standard southeast ridge to the summit (only Stephen Venables reach the summit - just barely - first Brit to reach summit (and return alive) w/o supp O2). PS: I'd NEVER climb Everest under any conditions - don't need to test myself that way, thank you.

    I've just watched a video from 3 years ago (which mentioned you by name and your theory of the route Mallory and Irvine took).
    They had a photo of the supposed 3 Chinese climbers, and while hoping not to diss them personally, they didn't look Chinese, and if their bones were as terrible as their teeth, I don't know how they even managed to get anywhere near the summit. It might merely be a mislabeling of a photo.
    But there was somerhing very interesting - photos of Mallory smoking cigars and pipies. It has changed my view on why he chose Irvine and that I think they did not summit. Even if you don't inhale, those toxins dilute with your saliva and drip down your throat.
    Just ask my sister, with esophageal cancer at a relatively young age, with calcified arteries, who was otherwise fit and healthy. The last person we thought would ever get cancer.
    Mallory was 37, so not exactly a youngster, without all the modcons of today's climbing gear and clothes. He knew he would not make it without oxygen, hence his choice of the novice Irvine, being the most experienced with the oxygen system. He had a great drive as he knew this was most likely going to be his last chance, and may have taken unnecessary risks.
    There was a non flattering quote by a relative in that video too. He was also blamed for the dearh of 7 Sherpas due to a misjudgment 2 years previously I think it said. How true this all is, I dont know. But it certainly threw a different perspective on the continuing mystery, and wonder if it will ever be solved in our lifetimes or be a mystery of the ages.

      These are all great reason that prove that Mallory died. However, there is not a real mystery about whether he survived or not. What people are interested in is whether he and Irvine reached the summit prior to their death. That Mallory was reckless and caused the deaths of 7 Sherpa in 1922 does indicate he has a reckless decision making process that caused him to put reaching the summit above safety in 1922. Whether he did the same thing in 1924 seems pretty clear -- because he and Irvine died.
      So, you should look at 1922 and see what you can learn about 1924. Given the choice of turning around in 1922 when conditions were dangerous and pressing on, Mallory chose to press on. Now, you argue that in 1924, Mallory didn't reach the summit. That means that given the choice of pushing on into dangerous conditions or turning around, he chose to turn around (given that he died on the descent). So, then why did he die? He just got extremely unlucky?
      Numerous Sherpa smoke -- some even while climbing the Mountain. They reach the summit just fine.

    I think you have compiled and presented the evidence which proves your conclusion, which I agree with. Let me ask some question: How long were the three summiters in the "death zone" during the expedition. How long did they climb without oxygen? What is their previous climbing experience and how many summits how they reached? And what is the highest they ever climbed before. I'd say we should credit Hornbein and Unsoeld for being the first to climb the north side of Everest. It was possibly the greatest climb in the history of the mountain, or very close to it.

    Hi Michael, sorry to bother you but ive just been watching 'The Epic of Everest' Captain Noel/outer sound project and approx 9 minutes in there is a few seconds of film footage of Mallory and Irvine, Mallory has a camera in his hand and the case is over his shoulder, any idea if its Mallorys? and if yes, was it returned to his family and any ideas what make?, it looks like a kodak pocket B but I'm no expert. Thanks.

    • @michaeltracy2356
      @michaeltracy2356  2 месяца назад

      It is Mallory's. Ruth asked that it be returned to her, but it is not clear if it was. It is not a VPK -- it is much larger. I have both the VPK and a model the same size as in that photo -- the one in the photo is much larger. I covered that particular piece in Epic of Everest in one of the camera videos. I'm in the process of redoing and consolidating all the information, so at some point, there will be a single "camera" video that covers all the important stuff relating to the cameras.

    Question: the”official” image of the summit rocks that you include in the vid… was the source of that image made before 1975? And if not, is there any visual record of them that can be dated to before 1975? Because cynical ol’ me can’t help but think it would’ve been easy for the ‘75 expedition to have got summit rocks, and then some nefarious soul could have placed the. in the archives and claimed that they were the 1960 rocks.

    The summit rocks in the picture appear to be too light to be the same rock type as on the summit, but the picture in itself is hardly conclusive. Identifying rocks from just a picture is usually very fishy, and the picture has a low resolution. Do you know if those rocks can be examined? Are they in a museum?

    Anyone who knew what to look for could find float samples matching the stratigraphy of summit rocks at EBC (both sides). With some deft rock hammer work, you could make 9 samples that roughly matched the 1960 samples. Might be a quick buck for someone who has CCP contacts...

    I am from India. Have lived in socialist era of India. You could not get any position, any promotion, any thing done without brown nosing yourself. You had to lick your superiors butt obnoxiously. And you might think those superiors would consider it flattery and scorn this. But no. They would actively try to bring anybody who flattered and provided the with gifts up. You could shove your merit up yours. They did not care. Because they themselves had risen doing that and expected it naturally from you.
    Secondly if you belonged to an organisation or a party then the head of that party or organisation was nothing short of second coming of christ. You HAD TO DEITIFY him or her. I mean it was absolutely required of you. Critical thinking, dissenting was absolutely forbidden.
    So what the Chinese wrote is not at all surprising to me. Because India was exactly that kind of a society.
    Infact even today the oldest political party (INC) of India suffers from the same. The head of the Poltical party is nepo baby.... Whose family had been head of the party for 5 generation. You can absolutely not criticise them. You have to show absolute devotion. The guy wanted that in India of today. And has been kicking his top leaders out of the party. He has no dearth of psychophants who surround him and whisper how great he is. This guy has a majestic track record of losing 90 percent of elections. Because as India was modernising it newer national party broke into the scene. Modi who is currently the prime minister of India belongs to this other party. He left no stone unturned at the nepo culture and calling him the IDIOT PRINCE of INC. This did not go down well with the Prince. He really thought he was a royalty and ought to be treated like one. Even after losing 3 national elections to Modi, and over 90 percent state elections to Modi.... This guy continues to head the INC. Because you have to clap and bow if you ever want to rise up in the party. If you don't bow down. Then doesn't matter how big of a leader you are, how many masses love you, you will be shown the door. They will rather lose the election than have their royalty questioned.
    Capitalism is what changed India. People who were tired of socialism entered workforce In the private industry. Suddenly private establishments were better, the products were more refined, there was a customer service. The pay was better. Had more respect. More accountability. All that took 20 years and Modi reign to change India into what it is today. Shackles of socialism are being broken only now. And still India suffers from those remnants of socialism.
    Most Indians support Donald Trump not because they like him, but they know exactly the politics of Democrats and it's end results. Because they have seen it in their own country. We have seen it all - The identity politics, DEI, socialism, angst against the Rich. India at one time had 96 percent taxation on businesses, that gave rise to black market cash based economy which India still cannot get rid of. Once you have a black market economy, it becomes a good place to consume money from corruption. Now corruption trails cannot be caught. Systems become oppressive. Criminal political nexus strengthens. And people suffer.
    It was with Modi that India voted across identity barriers. Only he was able to slightly damage the identity silos that such poltics had made.

      Well, people DO care, even if you don't. In the case of the Chinese, the claim was made as part of the propaganda that all dictatorships spew. It "proved" how inspirational Chairman Mao was by crediiting Chinese climbers with being the first to conquer the northeast ridge. However trivial, even absurd, that is, it is just how megalomania works.
      The fact that Mallory and Irvine likely DID make it in 1924 and the Chinese did NOT make it in 1960 is part of the ongoing intrigue of Everest. No other mountain has anything like it, so perhaps the "firsts" don't matter as much to most people. But Everest is just different.

      There is a major distinction between the Chinese and the Chinese Communist Party. Chinese literature is full of works and reflect the very ideas I promote throughout this channel. For instance see Dream of a Red Door or The Story of the Stone. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_of_the_Red_Chamber). If anything, this channel is very pro-Chinese literature and the ideals expressed in those works.
      Truth becomes fiction when the fiction's true;
      Real becomes not-real where the unreal's real.
      When Fiction departs and Truth appears, Truth prevails;
      Though Not-real was once Real, the Real is never unreal
      That is a core and fundamental philosophy of this channel.
