LOL funny that gene didn't like the idea of patrick stewart , but really i don't think TNG would have worked with OUT PS or with out a captain like piccard.
Consensus allows him to find out other perspectives which if he avoided that he would know less so would have a less informed decision. He also wasn't always caught with his shield down. Janeway was to concerned about getting home thus making a deal with the borg and allowing them to get federation technology others warned her against that.
I rate the Captains in Star Trek, Next Generation and Voyager. 1) Kirk 2) Janeway 3) Piccard Piccard gets last because he always gets caught with his shields down and makes decisions by consensus.
in all fairness to patrick stewart, he is quite wooden but thats his acting style - i think the best actor by far imo, had he lived, would have been yul brynner - he was fluent in French, he was several magnitudes more fluid that stewart and was again, had a far, far, far greater range than stewart.

Patrick Stewart is such a good actor that when you watch him in TNG, you rarely find yourself being distracted by him being bald.
I've never heard how/if Gene Roddenberry came to like Patrick Sterwart in the role?
I wish Stewart had played Denethor in LOTR.

My favorite was Janeway- lol- just kidding. Kirk and Picard rule!

Patrick Stewart was initially rejected. LOL. He was my least favorite Captain. Captain Ruler, woo hoo!
