You've got to try to play with the adversaries! That's where Spirit Island really starts to shine in my opinion. It does get more challenging, but also more fun for me. Especially on level 4. Then if you manage to beat level 6 you feel like you really accomplished something haha.
I will give them a shot soon. I already feel like I have accomplished something whenever I win because this game can be a tough one to win when you play solo with a single spirit. However, some of the new errata will probably help with that since most of the time, I lose because of blight and things have loosened up a little bit there for the solo player.
OOOF. This brings back some board game PTSD! I sold Spirit Island off a few years ago without even finishing the first game. I absolutely hated it. It gave me a brain burn that wasn't good at all. The decisions are very agonizing and extremely annoying. It's like trying to imagine various decision trees in your head for where your choices can lead you. That's absolutely horrible, in my opinion. I much prefer the brain burn of meaty Euros, which I enjoy planning out and don't mind the time it takes me to think about my plans.
sounds like you gave up on it way too quickly, or didn't give your brain sufficient time to get good enough at games that induce this kind of brain burn. Brain burn is a good thing btw, it means your being challenged in a way that you haven't adapted to be good at yet. And those adaptations take place after a good intellectual challenge such as this provides. In short, games like this improve your cognitive function considerably.
