My parents were watching the Grammys that night and the Eurythmics were completely unknown here then. Mom said 'he' was very good-looking and taped the song! lol The next morning the Today show was showing Grammy highlights and Dad took infinite delight in learning that Mom's inamorata was named 'Annie'!! LOL So for years whenever Lennox was on tv he would call,"Hey Bo, your boyfriend is on." And Mom would say wistfully,"She should've been born a boy." This ^ ^ ^ is fantastic.
Such a cool story. My parents were freaking out about all the “gender benders” in the 80s. I loved them and dressed as Boy George for my first Halloween party in College. Let’s just say I got a lot of attention. The next day my Dad came to visit me at school and freaked out when my dorm-mate came in and still had his nail polish on from the night before. That boy is now a neurologist and I am still gender bending in my own ways now.
Omg i remember that day too and i instsntly fell in love with this "handsome young man" lol! I was too young so i didnt know eurythmics singer was a female so it struck me real hard when i found out my latest crush was a she lol
I remember watching that performance LIVE in 1984. Let me tell you, middle America in that year could NOT handle it. I thought it was truly brilliant. Thanks for posting it. I lost the VHS of it along the way.
Why the fudge do evangelicals think gender-bending radiates scary waves that turn all their kids into gay and frilly commies? Okay, the Bible says it's a sin, but so is adultery and p$ssy grabbing, yet they ignore that. Who sets their flip-out rankings for them?
The music is great..superb... If they couldn't handle that, I agree... But seeing drag and "bending genders" is not anything that should be handled... Should be ignored and forgot.... But I see, to some people, y'all act like it's unique and Earth shifting if a man is dressing and acting like a woman and visa versa.... Shit ain't new and fresh and crossing lines.... It's just lame and conscrewed at this point
I miss being able to watch the Grammys. Being able to watch really great performances. It's not just flashy or controversial. I remember watching this as a kid, and I was absolutely amazed. Their performance was imprcable! Oh, well. I guess it is for the better that the award shows are now only available on streaming. These days, they are not as great as before. I totally agree with you. Back then, the Grammys, etc, were still worth watching.
I ABSOLUTELY REMEMBER seeing this live (on TV)! I was watching the Grammys with my Mom (still with us, thankfully) and right at the beginning I think, The Eurythmics were introduced, and I said to my Mom, "The lead singer, Annie Lennox is quite striking - short spiky red hair, but very pretty and a GREAT singer. I wonder if she'll wear a wig?" Suddenly, I see what looks like Elvis in Johnny Cash's clothes, and I said "Omigod! She looks like Elvis!" And my Mom said, "That's a WOMAN?" (Yup. Quite)
I was 11 years old when this aired and I remember just thinking "Huh? What the...?" I think the Grammys are still in shock. In hindsight, there is absolutely no one who can do gender-bending and androgyny quite as well and with style and panache as Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, Tilda Swinton and David Bowie. This is true art.
Love it! Annie and Dave had created sounds and instruments unlike anything I've ever seen or heard! I always loved watch Dave play these instruments as Annie's power voice and beautiful, hypnotic eye's and a unique look that they both shared with the world! They didn't care what others thought! They fought and sacrificed so much to create and express their art to the very top of the charts! Truly amazing and talented, strong artist that inspired me in my own art. I'd be drawing, sketching all the time while listening to their albums I had to have! The very albums that I refused to sale or rid myself of! So many precious memories. I miss the 80's 90's! I miss the music, how musicians expressed themselves freely. So many different choices! I'm still waiting the the next garage band to punch a hole in today's music!
I remember seeing this when it was on TV and never forgot her riveting performance! I thought it was just genius for her to do this and the way she moves is totally mesmerizing! She totally rocks in this!
I distinctively remember watching this live on television in 1984. I remember being confused because I knew who Annie Lennox was and I had no idea this was her. I had just learned about Elvis Presley 2 years before and thought this was either him or an impersonator. When my dad told me this was Annie Lennox I was REALLY confused.
I *gulp* am old enough to remember watching this live as a young teen. Everyone was like "Wha-- Why-- Whoa." Annie Lennox rocked and she didn't stand out for publicity; she just loved having fun. And she's still knocking us down with music.
jajaja me too, watching this with my Mom, it was like, is she Her? Or Not? Super Funny, but the both of us were amazed by this performance, also listening now i think she is forcing her voice to sound more manly, and she's having so much fun here!! Peace
I had 14 and I remember that the presenter said that Annie could not arrive and that in his replacement the subject would sing the brother. I believe it for years
My mom had this performance in a dvd, I loved the song and played it quite often. I couldn't believe when she told me it was a actually a woman and showed more of her songs lmao, my first ever celebrity crush was annie as a guy 😂❤
My gosh I remember seeing this performance for the first time and I was mesmerized and froze as I was enchanted by this legendary British duo...it was almost like I was in a trance, an out of body experience and it was sublime ❤
Love Lady Ga Ga, but what in the world was she thinking trying to copy Annie Lennox...I tell you, The 80's were awesome..saw this on TV and i was blown away back then as a 14 year-old kid
I remember seeing it live (tape delayed) on TV. Not John Denver but someone made a comment after she sang and I went MY LORD that's her! Amazing, always loved her.
It was John Denver remarking: “I could have sworn there was a Redhead in that group at rehearsal!” The Grammy’s released this clip but left out that wonderful response! See the original broadcast
THANK GOODNESS I FOUND YOU!! I remember watching this on Tv and I thought, I loved her drag outfit, GENIUS! I’ve been a big Eurythmics fan so I knew Annie would do different looks like this and it’s so cool.. but the world could not handle it haha! Eurythmics Forever!
So true , I remember watching it live when I was in my early 20s. The audience was confused, and so was John Denver. She sang in a lower register as well to complete the look. Later that night Boy George was beamed in via satellite from England to make an acceptance speech. He said " and thank you America for knowing a great drag queen when you see one ! " The Oak Ridge Boys were so upset that they walked out . 😆
Annie Lennox is not only a fantastic singer but a visually striking icon as well. How many entertainers could leave an impression on you 25 years later? So many times it's either a person with lots of talent but no image or tons of show but lacking in talent. She's got it all!!
Ya know, I've always felt that Annie Lennox was very androgynous while I was growing up but as I got older, I realized I always had an endearing attraction to her. Look at those eyes. No matter how she looked, image, etc, I was always programmed to see right through it to the pure sex appeal. Not to mention her stage presence and vocal prowess is uncanny. Even through the hoarseness of her voice here, I dont care. She is just pure elegance.
They cut out the best part. After the performance, they cut to John Denver, who just looks confused, as he looks at the stage, and says something lke "Ya know, during the dress rehearsal this afternoon, I could have sworn there was a redhead in that band", and he genuinely looked like he couldn't put it together that the drag king he just witnessed and said red head was one and the same. It had to have been scripted, I'm sure, they don't let anything to chance on these things (even though they say "Anything can happen during a live broadcast"), but he delivered the performance so perfectly, he truly seemed like he confused.
I saw this on TV when I was 13 in 1984. I said, "Oh my GOD! I thought SURE she was a woman!" I said, innocently, "See..the sideburns prove it. No woman has that....I think." As of 2007 I am a 23 year collector of Eurythmics.
She's been an example of how to DO things about LGTB...(and many other causes) instead of just talk, since day one, plus doing it with grace; a truly inspirational being.

annie lenno dressed up as elvis singing sweet dreams, this isnt gold, this is straight up diamond.
Thumbs up for the electric violin/guitar! It was amazing to see John Denver at the end. He is my favorite.
