Really love those plucked string sounds. Very natural and lively and the semi-randomness of it reminds me of windchimes. This is "ambient" in the truest sense to me. God help me, started thinking about dipping my toe in the euro waters. Local synth dealer is closing out their stuff at cost and a buddy of mine offered to sell me a sizable collection of spares for a good price.
been listening to this every other day at least once for the last 3 months.fantastic work!also: module companies should pay you big money for making so much people fall in love with modular and starting their own racks. ^^
Fantastic. I have been watching modular synth videos for a week and this is the first one I have heard that goes beyond bleeps and waahs. Actually beautiful and unexpected.
Lovely. I'd like to coax some flute sounds out of Rings. Might this be achieved exciting with Dunst? I hope so, your Elements wooden flute sounds are so gorgeous!
yeah, could definitely happen with dunst. set rings to green modal mode and feed it the white noise out. dunst is a bit quiet, so you may need to run it through a different vca.
This is probably the best look we've gotten at your rig. Looks like Elements, Rings, Clouds and DLD make this patch, mostly. What is that dark gray module in the lower left? I don't recognize it.
Aw, reading your patch details I realise Rings can do more than just make plucks and strums as the Odd, Even outputs can be more than audio out, one can trigger back to my Mother 32, well that's tomorrow sorted :-)
Mince alors...comment y fait ça...je vois pas;..c'est du quant. random? ..Ou..ah ouiiii! le ER301..peut-etre.. Hey r ben, .how do you make the song please? with the ER301?
Love these patches! Can I ask what are you doing with the 2 clouds? Do they feed into one another or both out? one as granular and one different? I'm intrigued!!
I'm using one in granular mode and one in looping delay mode. The looping delay one is multed into the granular one. They both have separate channels on my mixer.
Yes. This is what I accept and understand. But not that no sense stuffs, when from such machines come out some fart sounds and other strange sounds without any logic
I always say plan ahead with a goal in mind. Do you want an effects processor for other gear? A monosynth recreation with crazy modulation sources? It will vary depending on your goals and budget. A good way to tip your toes in is to get a cheaper used case with power (like Tip Top's Happy Ending Kit with uZeus) and buy a few used modules.
Hey Beny, congrats on the impressive composition. Hats off, for sure. Question though, how are you managing the intermittent rolls and flamed notes? And, as an owner of the Varigate 8+ but not the Voltage Block, do you feel like the VB gave you an appreciable benefit over the 2 CV channels on the Varigate? The lack of being tethered to the same pattern with a particular trigger pattern occurs to me, but anything else that puts it over the top for just two channels of CV? Thanks.
the steps advance on any gate/trig, not just a steady clock. so i fed it an interesting rhythm (that goes in and out of time, with lots of little random steps here and there) with the varigate.
Lovely work, as always. Mind sharing what kind of stand you're using? Been trying to find an amp stand or otherwise to use on my Structure but nothing quite fits.
just wondering how you record your videos. I'm just about to purchase a sound card to record my modular in ableton. But for making videos I'd like to record sound straight into my phone.....can this be done? love the videos too, real inspiration!
i only had tempi briefly. it's great if you have a lot of modules that need clock inputs. fun to experiment with as well. i ended up wishing the outputs were a bit more configurable.
I find it a good companion to Rene but needs random modulation to play naturally. Wogglebug is nice for this but it's a lot of patching to achieve what perhaps could be achieved more simply with a different configuration. Despite this I like interacting with this trio, feels like an instrument. You're a star!
Great stuff mate! Is the sampler doing much in this patch? Because as much as I'd love the sampler, I'm trying to refrain from buying it! The DLD and Varigate are on my short list though. :) At the end of the patch, did the Varigate open up some sort of gain elsewhere?
The 301 isn't doing any sample stuff here. It's just providing white noise (with built in envelope and vca) to Rings and being used as an effects processor (with a delay, filter and eq).
I appreciate the patch notes but I can't figure out how you're getting the pseudo random rhythms with the voltage block. I love how it goes slow and rings a bit, then does a bunch of notes that sound strummed. Can you help me out? Great video by the way, I think this is one of my favorites.
The random rhythm is actually from the Varigate 8+. I patched the first gate out to both Voltage Block and Rings. So Voltage Block advances notes only when it receives a V8 gate from that first channel. You can setup stuff like probability for gates per step, as well as gates with repeats, even a random amount of repeats. My only wish is that the two modules could link channels, not just clock.
That's a very beautiful result. I thought about the Varigate but it looked too deep for me this early in the game. I have a Metropolis now and am learning how to program it ... very fun. Excellent ambience. Really liking your work as well as ann annie’s ... cheers
Hi r beny, just got the Varigate and the Voltage Block, watched your video a couple of times and read the description, watched also the videos of @danielrdehaan (DRD_Tutorials), but I can`t figure out how to get different note lengths... I changed the PW on the Varigate, but on the Voltage Block the lights on each step stay the same lenght. In your video the plucked sounds from Rings have different lenghts, how???
In this video, I'm sending the gate 1 out of the Varigate to the clock in of the Voltage Block, instead of just using the clock. That way, the notes advance only when a gate plays on Varigate. There's quite a few low probability gates with a few repeats, Varigate is also cycling through 4 different patterns. I don't believe there is a way to set the note lengths on the Voltage Block otherwise, except for changing the timing.
Thank you for the answer r beny, so this is kind of a workaround. Maybe there will be an update someday for notelength...who knows.... And before I forget...thank you for all the nice music you share with us!!
I have a Varigate 8+ and Voltage Block on the way, and I'm curious, could you not have achieved the same thing for the Rings and Elements by using CV1 and CV2 on the Varigate 8+ with each of those associated to a Gate sequence? You can get different gate lengths in sequences on the Varigate 8+, right? Hoping you can shed some light and thanks for another blissful patch video!
You can do something similar with CV1 and CV2 of V8. The difference would be that the note sequence restarts when the gate sequence restarts. The Voltage Block will just keep advancing upon receiving a gate without resetting the note sequence. You can get different gate lengths on the V8. It can set per step as well.
r beny Sorry if I'm being dense, but is there a difference between a gate sequence of X steps of varying length coming from V8 and clocking a CV sequence of X steps on the VB versus a gate sequence of X steps of varying length on the V8 linked to a CV sequence on the V8 which would also have X steps? I get that the former wouldn't ever cause a reset on the VB but wouldn't these two setups result in the same gate and CV output? Of course you could get more complex results by having a gate sequence of X on the V8 and a CV sequence of Y on the VB, and maybe that is what you are referring to?
r beny It seems it worked out for both of us that I didn't buy your case. I got my new one last week and it fits perfectly where I had space for it. :-)
It isn't actually, even though it's patched up in the video (ended up not using it). The noise bed is one of the Clouds running through the Doepfer A-189-1.
That's spooky, I had exactly the same experience last week, was in my basket, went to check out and it disappeared. No one else seems to have them but managed to find one in Muffs. Not on the IFM website to order though, maybe the run is over.
that's interesting to know. I'm truly curious about the Dunst so I've managed to pick one up to explore, arrives next week. What are your thoughts on Dunst3?
I love Dunst. Great for adding a little extra vinyl-like crackle, great for noise, 2 built-in VCAs. It's a little quiet for a eurorack module, but I usually run it through the lo-fi junky which has a built in compressor.
r beny thank you. I have other sources I can put into it for clock just want sure if worth dropping the money for it by itself of if better to save up for both items.
Really love those plucked string sounds. Very natural and lively and the semi-randomness of it reminds me of windchimes. This is "ambient" in the truest sense to me.

Thanks! RIP bank account ;)
Man, you give a soul to this machine. Absolutely beautiful.
Bro,
Lovely,
Beautiful patch
BRAVO.👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️🎶🎶🎶
those chordlike sounds are amazing and arranged into a beautiful track.
One of your best. I love the slight "eastern" feel... this harp like tones... like being in Byzantium, but in the future...
RIP Mike McGrath. Without you and your community, I'd have never found r beny. What a sad day. :(
tapastro ah I just found out :( I hope he has found peace. I owe so much to mw
Do You know how it feels, when You inspire someone....?
You should (:
Thanks for the notes, it's a gorgeous patch. Dreamy peace vibe, nice.
sights like this get me shit excited to (slowly) grow my system
Elements sounds so lovely, a gorgeous wooden flute.
i miss it. rings can get close, but it's not the same
It would be rather nice in it's own hardwood case. That way it wouldn't feel so hp hungry and you could just enjoy it for the lovely giant that it is.
been listening to this every other day at least once for the last 3 months.fantastic work!also: module companies should pay you big money for making so much people fall in love with modular and starting their own racks. ^^
you hear that module companies??! thank you. glad you enjoy this video.
lovely tones in that melody! kudos.
sampled this and made a sick beat, amazing piece!
this is incredible. So human.
Awesome, reminds me a lot of this one Aphex Twin song I can't think of the name of.
The things you are able to do with your modular!! It's just amazing!
I've been re listening to you stuff lately. I really love this one and Cathedral Redwoods!
Just absolutely prefect
I really like your stuff, I've been following for a while. This one's a new favorite. Amazing work, really love the texture on this patch!
Excellent stuff. Thanks you SO much for sharing!
It sounds calming and relaxing. Very good!
listining through my mixer and adding a little bit more of reverb jeje, this is so nice!
more reverb!
Spine-chillingly beautiful as to be expected. Fantastic work as always! :D
I have only hip hop aphorisms for this excellent ambient. Damn, son!
sounds great. definitely need a second clouds in my rack
beautiful composition!
mmm. smells like jasmine.
You've inspired me to finally go eurorack.
Love your videos, you always find beautiful patches.
Fantastic. I have been watching modular synth videos for a week and this is the first one I have heard that goes beyond bleeps and waahs. Actually beautiful and unexpected.
I spy ARP, I used to LOVE my ARP axxe.
Nice piece! Really enjoyed that.
This is quite nice. I like the Asian feel of it.
Absolutly awesome
Lovely. I'd like to coax some flute sounds out of Rings. Might this be achieved exciting with Dunst? I hope so, your Elements wooden flute sounds are so gorgeous!

Super, thanks very much. We have Full Blossom of the Evening on repeat lately. Really gorgeous work. Thank you.
beautifully executed
Absolutely breathtakingly lovely, as usual! Keep it up! :)

Dreamy patch...... ambient joy!
Excellent!
Beautiful as always.
Fantastic!
Just beautiful!
Lovely piece
Geeeez! That sounded amazing!
Stunning
So so good. Thanks for the patch notes.
great ambient
just great man, as always.
Andrew Huang sent me... great tunes!
Awesome work indeed !
nice work!
Very nice, man.
Excellent work!
Marvelous!!
just WOW

Orthogonal Devices ER-301 Sound Computer. Insane module, should have videos up featuring it heavily soon.
r beny ...I love all your videos, but would be particularly and intensely interested to see what you do with the ER-301.
Cool man
cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

So pwitty!
Do you like the doepfer A-189? Really considering it.
I love it. Can be a little tricky to make it subtle, but it has a lot of sweet spots.

this is so amazing. how did you get the voltage block to change tempos like that?
the steps advance on any gate/trig, not just a steady clock. so i fed it an interesting rhythm (that goes in and out of time, with lots of little random steps here and there) with the varigate.
@@rbeny Awesome! Really nice work! Going to try that when I get home tonight
Lovely work, as always. Mind sharing what kind of stand you're using? Been trying to find an amp stand or otherwise to use on my Structure but nothing quite fits.
Ben Jacobs it's a guitar stand by k&m. I can't remember the exact model number, but that might help
This is really good! Do you release your music? I´m totally blown away
yes, rbeny.bandcamp.com. or search r beny on most streaming platforms
How did you create that nice background drone/lead?
The varigate 8+ looks totally rad! Hows it handling man? Epic patch!
The V8+ is a beast. Fast, fun, intuitive.
just wondering how you record your videos. I'm just about to purchase a sound card to record my modular in ableton. But for making videos I'd like to record sound straight into my phone.....can this be done?
love the videos too, real inspiration!
I recorded this on my phone. I use a Line 6 Sonic Port and an app called MoviePro.
r beny amazing. Thanks mate!
This is wonderful. Thank you for sharing this piece.
What are you using as a stand for your case in this vid?
thank you for listening/watching. the stand is a guitar stand from K+M.
Gorgeous. You really excel at sequencing natural feel. Thoughts on Tempi?

+1 That would be my wish too!

Mutable Instruments Rings
thanks! You're doing great, great work - thanks for that too!

Same Structure. Amount of modules fluctuates, but it does look great when full.
r beny It seems it worked out for both of us that I didn't buy your case. I got my new one last week and it fits perfectly where I had space for it. :-)
Hey man what stand are you using for that ep 360 case?
It's this guitar stand by K&M - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IY0BLB0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
chinese vibes, nice!

I was about to order a Dunst from Ctrl when it sold out! I actually had it in my cart and an hour later it was gone.

Haters gon' hate
Is that a David V. D'andrea GYBE! poster behind the rig?
yup! from when I saw them in big sur
What's that sitting there on the left?
Korg Arp Odyssey. Regrettably never filmed a full video with it.
hey man do you have a twitter?
@_rbeny
Can you use the Voltage Block without the Varigate 8+?
yes. but the voltage block will not run on it's own. it needs a clock, gate, or cv source from another module.
r beny thank you. I have other sources I can put into it for clock just want sure if worth dropping the money for it by itself of if better to save up for both items.
How do you like/use your MI Yarns?
I like it a lot! Use it in conjunction with the Electribe 2. 4 channels of melodic sequencing. Arps and built in sequencer are great too.
i wish i understood this
how it works that is
description reads like a 'spell'... a conjuring of sorts....
Wait .. Is this entire sound crafted on the modular ?!?
yes
@@rbeny Awesome performance !!!!
and again i have to admit i like much better what you do with the electribe than what you do with this machine, ok this is just ...my opinion
