If your garlic will endure cold temperatures, I think planting deeper is better. I'm in 8a and I plant them with the bottom of the hole about 4 inches deep and 4 or more inches apart to give the bulbs room to grow, They do NOT like to be crowded or compete with other plants.. I also soak the garlic cloves in compost tea for several hours to overnight or sometimes two nights before I plant. They grow when they are ready. [The Hopi Indians can't water their plants so they plant them deeply where there is more moisture and farther apart] I've had pretty much complete success doing it this way planting anywhere from 75 to 120 cloves over that past two winter seasons. I don't fuss over them and only water occasionally with compost tea. This season will be my third. I planted early this year in October. In the past I've planted at the end of November. Buying your garlic at the grocery store will mean you won't know until spring whether you have hardneck garlic which produces delicious curly scapes (a few weeks before the bulbs are ready to harvest) or not. The softneck kinds don't grow scapes but they will keep longer in proper storage. "Keene Garlic" is an excellent resource for everything you need to know about Garlic.
I think RUclips reads minds because I just planted garlic in the same type of container earlier this week and then this video pops up in my feed. I saw a bunch of different bulbs for planting on clearance from the local Sprouts grocery store and couldn't pass them up. I'm wondering if spring planting in coastal SoCal will be fruitless once the summer heat sets in. I guess time will tell.
Just seeing this almost a year to the date you planted them. Did you keep the bags away from the rain, cause California gets rain from about late Nov to Feb or March. Im thinking of planting them outside but not sure how the rainy season will affect them. Would love to hear your take
New Subscriber 🙋🏽♀️Is it true garlic can be grown in an apartment? We have cold winter weather here on the east coast. And what type of tea do you suggest? Thank you for your video. I can’t wait to plant
Yes, absolutely. You can grow it in the east coast weather. For tea, I use worm tea from vermisterra.com (use coupon code cag to get 10% off and free shipping). Happy Gardening!
Hello I am vegetarian so I am not using a and non-vegetarian chemical fertilizer so any other optional available for using inner gardening best fertilizer organic material
The question is, is it worth it? 1. Barrel cost $30 2. Soil cost $20 3. Watering 4. Time All for 20 bulbs of garlic. How can we make home gardening more affordable?
1 and 2 are reusable for decades, so much that you can ignore the cost. Yes soil levels go down but you can add home made compost. Watering can he automated. All my containers need zero watering by hand. Time spent is how you see it. I enjoy my time during Gardening, so it's actually a benefi for me. I don't see it as a cost. Sure, you can buy any produce cheaper at the store, but that's not why we are here for.
Hey, i do kitchen gardening at my terrace. The thing is that the satisfaction and pleasure u get when u harvest your crop even it is small in quantity, can't be compared with money. U'll know its worth when u do it urself. 😊
That is why I am starting 3 different varieties this coming week, time to start providing for myself quality. PS I used to haul garlic out of Gilroy, as well as Washington.

@@CaliforniaGardening ❤️
You can plant it outside just as long as the ground has not frozen.
@@emilybh6255 it normally does freeze though ☃️maybe try some inside and outside. Next year have greener 👍Grateful for your comments ☺️
How small/ deep can the pot be? Is a 5 gallon pot big enough?
Yes a gallon pot is deep enough
Hello I am vegetarian so I am not using a and non-vegetarian chemical fertilizer so any other optional available for using inner gardening best fertilizer organic material
You can use worm castings, rock phosphate, alfaalfa meal, etc which are vegan sources
How often do water your Garlic Plants?
In cooler weather, once every 3 days or so is enough
@@CaliforniaGardening thank you so much!
What soul did you use
Its a mix of coco coir, perlite and lots of compost and worm castings
The question is, is it worth it?
1. Barrel cost $30
2. Soil cost $20
3. Watering
4. Time

If I have to buy a pot, fertilizer, straw, and a garlic bulb, why not just buy garlic year-round?
Because you buy pot once, fertilizer and straw are natural resources (so free) and you can grow garlic for the rest of your life!
Hi
I love garlic, and it's a shame that Gilroy has to compete with inferior bulbs from China.
My local Asian stores' garlic and onion all come from china.
The Chinese use bleach on the bulbs. You don't want to plant those.
That is why I am starting 3 different varieties this coming week, time to start providing for myself quality. PS I used to haul garlic out of Gilroy, as well as Washington.
