how is this a bad move for toronto? Have one more shot at getting to finals then if that fails you talk to kawhi about resigning even though he most likely won't. Then raptors can rebuiild their roster which they were planning on doing anyway because they kept losing in the eastern conference over and over again
I think Toronto's plan is to is try trading Kawhi to the Lakers before the trading deadline or earlier than that. They figure to get more for him than Derozan
Maybe not by the deadline but a sign and trade at the end of the season with a max 5 years 190 million, Masai made this move for now and the future. Keep in mind Lakers aren't the only L.A franchise and dude is right above, they would get more for Kawhi then Derozan.
According to Woj (you know the guy Stephen A Smith wishes had sources like) Raptors felt like they did not have enough to make it past the Celtics. So then why Trade your franchise player for another franchise player? The truth is you got rid of Demars contract and are hoping kawhi does not resign so you can be apart the big free agency of 2019 lol.
Samcar Well yea he is better but if you felt like you had no chance with demar and lowry then getting kawhi wont help having to give up demar still and they a young center lol
Kawhi might just pull an old school move and stay in the states. I mean he did sit out this entire year essentially. Do you really see him going to Canada at all? He might never even come up there lol.
The deal gave them a higher upside with Kawhi over Demar, with the other possibility of their rebuild being sped up and having more cap room available. It was a solid move.
I think Raptors made a mistake, but I understand the logic: they're going all in this year, in two years there's no way they are beating Embiid/Simmons and Tatum & co. with Derozan.
Demar is making too much money for any other team to make a fair trade for. This is a quick and easy win win with a salary dump next season. Plus it keeps Kawhi away from Boston or Philly.
Raptors were going to rebuild anyway. atleast this way theyll have more money to do it. if kawhi stays, good....if he doesnt they have the money to start over. they were already too far behind boston, and philly is only missing one piece. The only problem is who will they be able to get for half year rental for Kawhi? The only team they’ll be able to deal with will be the Lakers and the Lakers will have massive leverage.
Masai is a genius. Unless you're a raps fan you might have trouble with this. Coach Nick Nurse is a brilliant and creative mind. You need players with offensive and defensive versatility to maximize his systems. DeRozan, a very good scorer tends to stop the ball and hurts the defense. Change was required!
Nick is 100% correct in this one. If they kept Derozan, they would be the 3rd best team in the East not only this year, but for years to come considering how young the Celtics and 76ers are. If they won 59 games with Derozan, they can only get better with Kawhi. Not only that, if Kawhi walks, they get needed cap flexibility in spite of big contracts from Jonas, Ibaka, and Lowry. They do lose Derozan, but by standing pat, they were going nowhere.
Shoto T bruh i know the regular season is different from the playoffs but these teams were all goin at it. Celts, raps, 6ers all played well against each other . just because the celtics took the cavs to 7 dont mean they sweep the raps .
This is a win for Toronto. Like Portland, This backcourt isn't winning a championship. Now, Toronto gets a superstar. If Kawhi doesn't resign, its money off the books for Toronto.
Highly disagree. Spurs now have DeMar at $28m for 3 years, a bench player and pretty much two 2nd rounders.. How is that good? They have 0 cap space for the next 2-3 years to make any moves and have already lost Green and Anderson in their backcourt. Spurs losing all over the place.
takeover08 They didn't handle anything poorly. Their doctors said Kawhi could play and he could. He just didn't want to play though pain. He got a second opinion which is still an opinion and to this day has not provided any proof that he could not play last season. After getting his second opinion he decided for no good reason that he didn't want to tell the Spurs anything about his new recovery and rehab process. They received no updates on an employee they were still paying millions upon millions of dollars. They then sent ppl to check on him and he decided to hide from them (almost like he didn't want them to see he wasn't injured).
Ok so what im taking out of this is that 13 teams in the east should tank. I mean they say theyre is no competition in the league, then a team trades for arguably the 3rd best player when healthy and they call them out for it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The Raptors were never gonna win with those two backcourt players so they did what Portland and Washington should have done ages ago which is trading for a star wing player. Im also not that convinced Philly is any better then this Raptors team. People should celebrate this move
They basically traded Demar because they knew that he wasn't the guy that could lead them... they get from under his contract and they still stay competitive for the short term... questionable move but I can kinda see why they made it

Stu Jackson ruined a franchise and has the audacity to say this trade is a bad move. Raptors became 2019 championship Toronto was the second best team in the east in 2020 How wrong is this guy ?
I disagree with the rebuild mode. Raptors will open up a lot of cap space for next season stacked NBA free agency depends if Kawhi stays or not with the team. Good trade for both teams
One problem with that: what attracts free agents to Toronto and when was their a huge free agent signing there? Players don't prefer going through customs and in the cold weather...Raptors better hope kawhi falls in love with the city
Toronto was capped having DeMar as their best player. They're betting they can keep a player in a weak east in a large market city. It's risky but they have a chance.
We're happy....It's April, Toronto finished 2nd in the season, winning 3-1 in round 1 of play offs and the team has become over all way better!!! Hope he stays but thanks for what you contributed.
The Raptors weren't going anywhere even with Lebron gone. They got swept by that bad Cavs team which would have been beat by a complete Celtics lineup.
The celtics would get swept in the finals as well. In the end, what really matter in this regular season is related to these small narratives. LeBron in LA playing with scrubs, San Antonio "rebuilding", etc.. Because we know (again) the final result.
Celtics could maybe get one, they have the best coach in the game... But the talent disparity is just so insane. This league proved time and time again that star power is the prime factor in many championships, so much so that was the reason why the celtics was beaten by the cavs.
I understand why the Spurs did what they did but for the Raptors to have the number one record in the conference to do something like this after promising the player they wouldn't trade him and after firing the NBA coach of the year who has led them to back-to-back 50 plus win seasons but Luke Walton still employed in LA after winning 26 games one year in 35 games the next year. This makes no sense. If the Raptors would have kept their coach and their players this may have been the year for them to win the championship. No one knows that's why they play the game. Everyone assumes Boston will be the best team in the east but when Haywood is playing and Tatum is on the bench that may create a chemistry a issue. Also, when Kawhi is playing it may create an issue for Rozier and Smart. No one else. Psychologically the Warriors maybe fatigued and they just might not make it to the Conference Finals or to the NBA finals this year it happens but the Raptors in my opinion have made a bad decision.
9:35 is the key question to this entire trade, Kyle Lowry now knows this team will pull a Celtics/Isaiah move on him in the future so they Should expect him to pull a Kawhi on them this season - an injury though.
not that complicated. Toronto took the two best propositions they have for their future. Trade a part of their duo for Kawhi to shake things up for the present in terms of competing in the East. Then if Leonard decides to leave they can just trade away Lowry Ibaka and Valacunis as well and construct a full rebuild.
It's amazing to me how opposed those two are to this trade. These guys wanted him to be traded to the Lakers because they know, now that he is in Torronto the chances of him going there are reduced. Still good maybe, but everyone thought Paul George would leave for the Lakers too. As for the Raptors, they may have reduced their chemistry somewhat but significantly upgraded their Roster. Maybe for just one year, but we bash other teams for not trying their best to win. The Raptors did that, they have a much better chance now than they had before, even though it comes at a risk.
No wonder your caption is “ Former NBA coach”, your presumption are all wrong regarding this trade. Now i know. after trading Kawhi to Raptors they are now in the Western conference final.
For whatever legitimate issues Kawhi had with SA, he has done himself no favors by his handling of this situation from a business standpoint-other than getting paid $19 million not to play, for which he'll now take a huge loss in taxes next season. I hope it's worth it to him when he finally gets to LA and whatever contract he can get then.
Two things: 1. Not only did the Spurs sent Kawhi from the west but they sent him out of the country all together. lol2. DeRozan finally got rid of Lebron and now has to face him in the West. I swear DeRozan will have nightmares about Lebron way into old age lol
As a raptors fan I hate this trade. As much as I wanted Kawhi we just traded derozan, probably the best raptor ever for a one year rental where I doubt we’ll even make it out of the east for one simple reason kawhi doesn’t want to be here. Masaii just wanted to be able to say that he got a franchise player. WHAT A WASTE!!!
For the Raptors, this is just a pitch for Kwahi, they are moving all the big contracts next year, no more Lowry, no J.V, no Ibaka. They already have the replacement for these players on the bench. I expect them to big players on 2019 free agency.
Would trading for Kawhi Leonard be a huge mistake for the Raptors?

The celtics would get swept in the finals as well. In the end, what really matter in this regular season is related to these small narratives. LeBron in LA playing with scrubs, San Antonio "rebuilding", etc.. Because we know (again) the final result.
celtics will be in the finals with ease.
"Expedentially"?? I think you meant to say Exponentially
Can't believe nick is one making sense in this video 😩😂😂
Stu Jackson was great here, bring this man back, please.
Nick always makes better points than the other guys
Raptors had to do this. Just like Cris and Nick said Free agents rarely ever willfully leave a team for Toronto.
This hasn't aged well. 😂😂😂
what is a "normal nba city"?
but in another video they said san antonio isnt a normal nba city...so then what is?
Magic Johnson is a genius look how hes setting that team up for next year when k Leonard arrives
This is crazy..i actually agree with Nick Wright
9:35 is the key question to this entire trade, Kyle Lowry now knows this team will pull a Celtics/Isaiah move on him in the future so they Should expect him to pull a Kawhi on them this season - an injury though.
not that complicated. Toronto took the two best propositions they have for their future. Trade a part of their duo for Kawhi to shake things up for the present in terms of competing in the East. Then if Leonard decides to leave they can just trade away Lowry Ibaka and Valacunis as well and construct a full rebuild.
lol yup!! That Championship is worth that risk!!
Chris Carter: "The Monsters gone" hahahahahaha ROFLMAO!
didn't you draft steve francis after he said i didin't want to play in vancouver?
Why don't they talk about how this deal can impact the Spurs?
The only thing they were right on”Khawi was a one year rental “
Demar derozan chokes every play offs.. smart move
Raps got swept twice. It was time to make a move.
Actually, three times. The woeful Wizards swept them in 2015.
isnt this the dude that used to fine everybody
Mike Anderson yep
Yah and the idiot who responsible for the disaster vancouver grizzlies
100% agree with Nick
For the Raptors, this is just a pitch for Kwahi, they are moving all the big contracts next year, no more Lowry, no J.V, no Ibaka. They already have the replacement for these players on the bench. I expect them to big players on 2019 free agency.
Such a risk that is not worth it for the Raptors
