For ESPN users, I would definitely recommend using the practice draft feature. Not just to practice drafting, but to see players that are currently pretty underranked. Players like Marchand are projected to go pretty late, along with people like filip forsberg, matts zuccarello, as well as goalies like jarry and andersen. No idea why they’re ranked so low, but if you spot them and add them to your queue early you might be able to get some mid to late round steals before anyone else notices

That seems to have worked decently well.
I always look at the next best option when drafting because my league is very deep, we roll 3 full lines. McDavid and the top few guys can't be replaced, but once it gets out of the 100-pt contenders, defenseman become a huge premium because there's only about 10 elite point producers.
2 years ago ESPN actually completely forgot to rank Toffoli, so unless you knew this you would never see him in the draft somewhere in the 300's it was a free pick.
It's almost impossible to judge hockey players for fantasy, because in addition to scoring, there is value in shots, hits, and even PIMs, to the point where a guy like Brady Tkachuk is so valuable because he does all of those things.

NHL list is pandering to have included Ovechkin. It actually makes no sense. His plus/minus is never great, he doesn’t play penalty kill and he’s getting old so his ice time is down. Maybe he gets 80 points this year with a minus 5, 18:00 minutes a game. That’s a 3rd or 4th round pick.
I think Marner and Kucherov unless injured should score a minimum of 30 goals and 70 assists. I think they'll both be in the top 20. ESPN's list is weaksauce. Are they projecting them to break their legs this year?

Personally, depending on your league settings, I think taking Makar over McDavid is a ludicrous idea. You could get Dahlin or Josi or Hamilton or Heskienen at an elite D with your second round pick.
@@Murph999 you can also get many great centers into the third, fourth and fifth rounds as well. The drop off for defenseman happens much quicker than it does for centers.

I build my team by minimizing my weaknesses. Last year we had two center positions and four defenseman. I drafted eichel in the 3-4 round, Jack hughes in the 10th and tage thompson was a waiver wire add. Sure they might not be mcdavid but hughes and thompson play two positions so I believe it worked out better for me. You're not going to get that quality of defense past the first couple of rounds.
