Classic, no leg ropes. Reminds me of surfing Cactus, South Australia, 1973 with no leg-ropes. Drove from Perth with my brother and a mate in brother's Holden EH station wagon. Water was cold there, middle of summer, lost my board on the take-off way out the back, very scary swim in, notoriously sharky!! 🦈 Still surfing today, albeit on a sup (sup haters will be ignored 😎), always with a leg-rope...

Vietnam War, Lynch was a Australian citizen, and their units served in Nam, but i believe he wasn't chosen for national service. Fred, 60,000 US service men died in Nam and for what? Today you can rent a hotel room on the South China Sea coast of Vietnam and Surf in peace.
