I had the Hankook on an SUV , for about a month. They were useless in Nordic conditions, and I switched to Hakka R5 after that. Huge difference on snow and ice. But the Hakkapeliitta R5 is very bad at aquaplaning. One of the worst tires I've had in heavy rain.
Just rewatched that video again for reference. Is there a resource available where we could possibly reference CE winter, soft compound, and studded tire geographical suggested areas. North Americans and Europeans may not be familiar with each place's geographical climates, and a reference guide might be handy for ex-pats and immigrants. Not that I'm suggesting that you should have to do it. You put a ton of work into these reviews, and you are my 1st stop for comparisons when tire shopping. Keep up the good work!@@tyrereviews
@@tyrereviewsyes do explain, I am no expert , I live in Québec and our winters are also a mix. Powdered and wet snow, slush, 0 c to -40c, rain once or twice, lots of black Ice on overpass. Ahh, I wish you could've done ice also. hoping future vids show that. I'd love to see the Michelin X-ice, Bridgestone DM-V2, and Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5. Keep up the great work!
You are a legend. Thanks again for making these videos. It's invaluable material for us drivers trying to make the right safe choice. I had 4 Goodyear vector 4seasons gen 3 put on the family car this weekend. Compared to the Pilot sports Ive been using for years the car felt more softer, a bit squidgy but I will get used to that. but most importantly I know i can be confident that my family will be safe in wet or winter conditions, and that's what really matters. According to the subjective opinion of most people in my country, if we take premium tires, Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Plus SUV is considered a better option than Conti or Michelin. We often have “porridge” on our roads - a mixture of water, snow, sand and mud. + bad roads. It is believed that the TS 870 P and Pilot Alpin 5 SUV are better for the Eurowinter, where there is less snow and better roads. The main complaint about Conti is that they wear out quickly. Most likely, this is due to the quality of the road surface.
Great review. It would be good though if you state the temperature for the wet/dry testing. In this and the other winter/AS videos. If not below say 7 degrees doesn't it compromise the results given the optimal design parameters, and especially if doing any comparisons with summer tyres? Slopes too - I've managed along flat sections in the snow ok with summer tyres before, after a suddenly flurry, but it's the traction uphill and breaking downhill that makes a difference and really matters. Great if you could get more of that in. It's hard to do everything, but I'd guess it's probably more useful to most than lap times on snow... if less fun :)
Love it. I’ve got the Contis predecessor on my SUV and I’m already very happy with it. Also I can underline the Bridgestone LM005 as a perfect Central Europe Winter tire, because it hardly ever snows and it rains all the time. I love these tests.
Good call using the Bridgestones. They tend to be cheaper which is a factor and arguably more available. It can be quite hard to find the known brands Michelin, Pirelli and Conti…and then the price..
I really miss the Ice driving test in this one. Winter annoyingly has it all, but the most worrysone moments are ice. Even in dry circumstances, you'll have ice collection near traffic lights as cars dump their water via the exhaust there. About 50 meters of it to the traffic lights. And of course when snow gets compacted to black ice which usually takes just one day. Happy to see Maxxis in the test. Off road possibly the best Mud and maybe AT tires, so good to see they are branching out and did a decent job. I assume they'll improve in the coming years and become one of the main brands where price and quality are best. I just bought the maxxis and Nokians, but mainly as there was nothing else available for my LC200, Prado 150 and Suzuki Grand Vitara. I do have older Miss Alpines, and despite having done 60k on them, i do have some trust left in them. Great tires. Thanks for the review, top quality as always.

So my take away is: In order to improve rolling resistance it is very difficult not do a huge trade off (against wet / aqua / snow). Alpin 5 was best in snow and other, because it kept to this rule. However Conti managed to improve RR without much tradeoff, which is nice.
I will be getting these Continentals for this winter for my brand new hybrid 4wd CRV. The Rolling resistance was major factor as hybrid can go far on electric mode (not plug in version) the less resistance it has. Sure Alpin 5 has better noise reduction but at the cost of RR that is too high.

A very good review that provides clear opinions on a subject that is prone to get complicated. Answered every question on my mind. Nice driving by the way👍
Thank you very much for your great test and summary. I took this October the Nokian because the price was much lower than Michelin and continental for Q3 45TFSIe audi. Would love to see van tyre tests. Hi Jonathan, not to be a stickler, but driving on a wet road ad 5 degrees is different than driving on wet at 20 something degrees. Or am I mistaking? Your wet test was done in warm weather.
Thanks for another great, subjective test. I struggle deciding whether to put winter or all-season tires on my mother's SUV because even in Michigan (USA) she’ll be driving on dry or wet roads at least 90% of the time. Anyway, thanks again.
Can’t wait for an episode of “The Best SUV 3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake A/T Tire in winter” Comparing tires like BFG KO2 (or newer KO3), Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac (without studs), Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Toyo Open Country AT3. Maybe even add Michelin LTX A/T 2 to the mix as many 4Runner owners swear about its winter performance even without 3PMSF rating.
I know ppl who run on bald tires because they cannot afford new tires. Heck, I've even seen all 4 tires with the wires showing! They cannot afford to not have tires with some tread left but if all they can afford for their $200 beater are cheap tires, then I'm not going to judge them. Sometimes they even have to buy used tires, but yeah, I agree: always buy the best tires you can afford because medical bills can easily run into the thousands (in the US). [I envy ppl in other countries who will look at this and laugh at how insane that our healthcare system still has not improved or catch up to Europe and others.]
I just replaced my bmw x3 RFTs with Continental Extreme Contact DSW 06 Plus. The ride is amazing, as I expected. Every new vehicle I’ve purchased over the past 15 years, I drove to Discount Tire the next day and put Continentals on it. Cannot match the ride as well as amazing handling. I’ve even taken off new Michelins and still got a better ride.
Thank you for the fantastic video! I've watched it multiple times and even shared it with a couple of friends. Based on your recommendation and taking advantage of a great promotion offered by dealer, I've chosen the Continental WinterContact TS870 (235/55/R19) for my Alfa Romeo Stelvio Q4 with 280hp. I can't wait to see how this combination performs on the winter roads!
Awesome- entertaining and professional content as always! I am quite impressed with Hankook to be honest, brings a lot to the table for it's price and I like that overall performance. Looking forward to next videos, hope to see ice testing back if it will be possible for you. Take care and keep up with great videos, cheers! :)
Where are the test day temperatures not mentioned in these test videos? The tire compound materials act different based on the temperature. Your test results may be very different if it’s -30C or -35C on ice and snow.
He should have tested the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 and DMV2, and Michelin X-Ice available in the US but maybe not there? I drive my 2013 Mazda CX-5 AWD on Blizzak WS90s -- fantastic on snow and ice. They are like a playground for this CUV! Could've picked DMV2 but the former had a slightly better rating. X-Ice are said to be better performers, mainly regarding acceleration.
Thanks for interesting video, in future maybe Leao can be changed for Sailun. I would like to see Michelin CC2 vs Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 vs Michelin X-Ice Snow test that included ice. 🤗
I have already fitted kleer quadraxer 3. But still have dunlop winter sport 5 almost 5 year-old tyre in case quadraxer fails to deal with the snow. Hope Poland will not be affected with rough snow next 3 winters....Kleber will not last more....
Would you test Petlas Glacier W661 as a budget tire in the nordic winter tire test? The pattern of the tire is very impressive and it is widely sold where I am.
Just subbed. Love your channel. We live in Canada and I just bought a 2024 Rav4 hybrid awd and we get a good variety of snow / ice and slush. What do you recommend for snow / slush performance in the Micheline line? Im looking at Micheline X Ice -Snow, Alpin and Cross Climate 2?
I have the Cross Climate 2 on my 2019 Subaru Forester Sport. Perfect year round tire for Seattle and the snowy mountains. I'm amazed how well it performs in slush and deep water. I used to switch between a winter tire like the X-ice and a regular all season. But with the Cross Climate, I don't do that anymore. A friend has the Cross Climate 2 on her RAV4, in Florida, because it performs so well during the heavy thunderstorm downpours.
thanks for the reply. We get some pretty serious snow / ice here and as the rav comes with brand new micheline all seasons ill probly get the X snow ice for the winter @@jonmoceri
What an excellent review!!... not to say that you produces any bad review so far.🤣 Guess what I am going to suggest???.... Best SUV Winter against Best SUV All Season (All-Weather) like... the CrossClimate 2 SUV. Thank you so much for all the effort you have put in to give us these great information.
So which tires do you(Tyre Reviews) use on your Cayenne SUV? Thanks again for another great review. What tire would you recommend for the Pacific Northwest region(USA).
I'm actually just in the process of fitting my Cayenne with the Nokian Outpost nAT as I wanted a winter rated AT tire. My wifes SUV uses the CC2 as a winter tire in the salt lake region.
@@tyrereviews Thanks. Yes I was thinking about the CC2(from your last review). In the winter we only get maybe 1 or 2 weeks(if that) of the white stuff on the roads, mostly rain rain rain, and rarely below 0 C, so would the CC2 still be a good choice. I thought at one time you were running Continentals on your Cayenne. Thanks again.
My daughter uses gt ice pro on her suv and uses them all year long and they last 3 years! She tries to slide but she can't. She passes jeeps and everyone that's stuck. Yet you never hear about them!
At 0:28, the left rear tire is the Falken, the other two visible are the Michelin. Hoping this wasn't an oversight during mounting and it wasn't tested with a mismatch?
The brands that always place well are ones I commonly recommend. I have to laugh that the "no name" or cheap Chinese tires are always as bad as you think they are. Can't personally believe people cheap out on tires. Great roundup as always!
Unfortunately, some ppl in the US sometimes only make minimum wage or got laid off and has to make every cent last. Also, hopefully ppl buying cheap tires will fund those companies better so that they'll become more competitive in the future or even come up with new technologies. I mean companies came up vulcanization, radial (vs bias) and their own unique compound and ratios and I look forward to newer and better technologies that the industry will adopt.
@@SayAhh True, but I too often see people driving an X6 or Escalade and have no name tires, with barely any thread on them. They are a danger to anyone on the road.
@@SayAhh "Also, hopefully ppl buying cheap tires will fund those companies better" - You are funding China by buying Pirelli, as they are Chinese owned, they do have access to the best Western technologies, yet they still make crappy tires, because they cheap out.
I’d be curious to know the temperature of the track during the dry tests. I feel that the hard compound of the cheap tires explains its dry performance and the poor performance of the better cold weather performers.
Keep up with your great work! Would you still recommend the Conti for the new Cayenne S in a Central European climate (Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium)? 21 or 22inches? Thanks!
Any plans to come back to the US for more testing? It's time for me to acquire a new set of all seasons and tuck away the summer wheels and tires. My local tire shop sold me on an exclusive set made by Continental that only they carry and I'm wondering how it compares to the (now legendary it seems) DWS06+. The sales person says the DWS is more for larger cars and SUV's, while the other Continental is supposed to be better for smaller, lighter cars with respect to driving dynamics. Consequently, I can find absolutely nothing online comparing the two and it's given me the epiphany that such a test could enable some broader conclusions about the efficacy of "exclusive" tire formulations across different vendors, for example how they're positioned with regard to the performance vs price scale. Appreciate the great work as always, keep it up and stay safe!
@@tyrereviews it seems more like a mutual agreement to me, because Continental has no MSRP on those tires and as such the tire shop is allowed to charge whatever they want. So they priced them $3 below the DWS06+ in the same size lol. Once I get them mounted and put a few miles on the tires I'd be happy to give some feedback for the site. But the reason I asked about the exclusives comparison is because, without having done any research prior, I'd assume it isn't only Discount Tire with some kind of exclusive offering and as such it makes me wonder if there truly is some kind of difference beyond the tread pattern with this class of tire lol Didn't know you live in the US, that's pretty cool!
New subscriber here. You have probably talked about this in one of your videos, i just havent seen your explanation. Why are you not including ice breaking or ice handling scores? I put winter tires on my vehicles not only for better snow traction but primarily for better ice traction.
Nice review! I'd love to see a light truck winter tire review for HD 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 pickups. I haven't been able to find one and am going to need new snows for my 1 ton dually in the inland Pacific NW.
Can someone explain why the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is on the list, since it is not an SUV tyre? Continental officially specifies it as a "passenger car" tyre. I'm genuinely interested, as I'm considering it for an X1 U11.
What’s the difference in Blizzak LM005 vs Blizzak DM-V2? I’m stuck trying to figure out what to fit on my 23’ RAV4 Prime PHEV and seeing the DM-V2 coming up most frequently.
It is frustrating that some of these tires are not available in places. You should include tires from previous seasons in your future reviews. That way, if we cant get access to some of them, its possible to compare them to previous generations.
please explain to me how in this test the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P comes so close to Michelin in show handling, but in the non SUV test (Best 11 Winter Tires for 2023/24) it just comes in 8'th
Could you please do an Electric Vehicle tire review? I especially want to see the new Hankook iON EVO AS compared to previous “ECO” non EV tires for efficiency. If you can test it on a Tesla Model 3 that would be ideal for me. However, the Model Y is the best selling EV by far so that might be the best option now. Thank you for all of your hard work.
When doing the next winter tyre test, could you pls add the pirelli pzero winter? There is no real review for it and much less a comparison, but even though the modell is a few years old ive never driven a btter feeling winter tyre
Thanks for the test . Just bought the new Mazda CX90 and need winter tires. Sometimes it depends on availability. Because tires are 21 inch was going to go for the optional 19 in tire. Is a wider tire better in snow or a narrow tire. Your thoughts on which tire and narrow or wider?
@@tyrereviews Great video and amazing content! I came across your video looking for the best winter tyres on a Tesla Model X for drives in the Swiss Alps. Maybe even add Michelin LTX A/T 2 to the mix as many 4Runner owners swear about its winter performance even without 3PMSF rating.
You can't go far wrong with any of the brands in the headline. But people need to be educated on just how bad the budget tyres are in comparison
I’ve even taken off new Michelins and still got a better ride.
that's a great tyre :))
How have they been so far?
LOL he dead
Great info!👏
Awesome- entertaining and professional content as always! I am quite impressed with Hankook to be honest, brings a lot to the table for it's price and I like that overall performance. Looking forward to next videos, hope to see ice testing back if it will be possible for you. Take care and keep up with great videos, cheers! :)
Great channel and videos. Subscribed!
Teşekkürler.
Would love to see straight up comparos of the H/V rated snows vs. the S/T versions of the same brand. Like Pilot Alpin 5 SUV vs X-ICE Snow SUV.
Would be fun to do, it's on the list!
Would love to see how the X-Ice compares to the Pilot Alpin now... I'm on the fence!
X Ice much better in snow and ice, alpin much better in dry and wet and probably wear and rolling resistance.
@@tyrereviews thanks Jon
Very useful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Amazing work!
Think they should do a review for performance SUVs
Great review, but dry handling is exactly what I’m most interested in since I’m driving in the dry 90% of the winter.
Thanks for interesting video, in future maybe Leao can be changed for Sailun. I would like to see Michelin CC2 vs Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 vs Michelin X-Ice Snow test that included ice. 🤗
I wonder why the Contis performed so poor in the aqua test? It must be the inverse result of the superior rolling resistance.
I have already fitted kleer quadraxer 3. But still have dunlop winter sport 5 almost 5 year-old tyre in case quadraxer fails to deal with the snow. Hope Poland will not be affected with rough snow next 3 winters....Kleber will not last more....
For the winter I am looking into 4 fresh Firestones Winterhawk 4 they are just as good as Bridgestone only cheaper
Excellent! Thank you. Think you'll do all seasons for SUVs again?
Not this year, sorry
Would you test Petlas Glacier W661 as a budget tire in the nordic winter tire test? The pattern of the tire is very impressive and it is widely sold where I am.
Petlas are a budget brand, I don't know much about that pattern but looking at the pattern it does look like a soft compound winter tyre.
We get some pretty serious snow / ice here and as the rav comes with brand new micheline all seasons ill probly get the X snow ice for the winter
@@jonmoceri
Slush is difficult to test, but I imagine the CC2 would do fine in it. If you do get serious snow / ice then X-Ice is the only real option.
Being a Canuck we have Michelin X-Ice SNOW SUV on two vehicles. They are made in Canada, eh!
:D
What an excellent review!!... not to say that you produces any bad review so far.🤣 Guess what I am going to suggest???.... Best SUV Winter against Best SUV All Season (All-Weather) like... the CrossClimate 2 SUV. Thank you so much for all the effort you have put in to give us these great information.
NExt year I plan something similar
Thanks for the video. One question, how come you didn’t reviewed blizzak dm-v2 instead which is specifically for SUVs?
That's a soft compound winter, these are milder winter options
My daughter uses gt ice pro on her suv and uses them all year long and they last 3 years! She tries to slide but she can't. She passes jeeps and everyone that's stuck. Yet you never hear about them!
I wish you would have included the CC2 in the test.
Coming from Canada, we have the real deal in terms of snow, so for me I need the best in snow, so Michelin is my top.
great video, thanks. Can you tell us for driving and safety mainly on wet surfaces whether you prefer to use 4_season or winter tyre?
4 season should have a slight advantage
Well, there's my actual Pilot Alpin 5 SUV this week kickin' butt again :)
As I said on the other video, absolutely love them on my Macan GTS.
It's a great tyre
At 0:28, the left rear tire is the Falken, the other two visible are the Michelin. Hoping this wasn't an oversight during mounting and it wasn't tested with a mismatch?
No, it was missmatched as I needed one of each for the group photos
Makes sense, thanks for the reply.@@tyrereviews
Thanks!
Whichever you can get the better tires in :)
Honestly disappointed there was no ice test, where i live we tend to get more ice than snow so its pretty important over here
Any plans to come back to the US for more testing?
Appreciate the great work as always, keep it up and stay safe!
i actually live in Utah so yes, however it's very unlikely I'll ever test one of these weird store exclusive. I'm hoping conti stop them lol
But the reason I asked about the exclusives comparison is because, without having done any research prior, I'd assume it isn't only Discount Tire with some kind of exclusive offering and as such it makes me wonder if there truly is some kind of difference beyond the tread pattern with this class of tire lol
Didn't know you live in the US, that's pretty cool!
What’s the LM model from Blizzak? I have the DMV2 model so what’s the difference ?
I've decided on the Michelin X ice Snow's
Thank you for this. Looking for some Michelin alpines now.
I just bought Maxxis Premitra Snow, now i wait for the first snow to fall
Thank you!!!
Its good to know that if i take complete leave of my senses and get a +2t monster truck that there are good quality tyres to rein in all that weight.
the new M3 is almost 2t, you don't need a monstertruck for weight anymore!
New subscriber here. You have probably talked about this in one of your videos, i just havent seen your explanation. Why are you not including ice breaking or ice handling scores? I put winter tires on my vehicles not only for better snow traction but primarily for better ice traction.
Recently I had an accident due to heavy snow don't why my car brakes blocked and started to slide may be Abs or traction control function?
Nice review!
I'd love to see a light truck winter tire review for HD 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 pickups. I haven't been able to find one and am going to need new snows for my 1 ton dually in the inland Pacific NW.
I have a mild all terrain snow test coming out soon!
cant wait@@tyrereviews
Can someone explain why the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is on the list, since it is not an SUV tyre? Continental officially specifies it as a "passenger car" tyre. I'm genuinely interested, as I'm considering it for an X1 U11.
What’s the difference in Blizzak LM005 vs Blizzak DM-V2? I’m stuck trying to figure out what to fit on my 23’ RAV4 Prime PHEV and seeing the DM-V2 coming up most frequently.
How about a budget studded vs top studded and have blizzaks as the winter. Like to see how much of a difference you will find in the studded ones.
It is frustrating that some of these tires are not available in places.
You should include tires from previous seasons in your future reviews. That way, if we cant get access to some of them, its possible to compare them to previous generations.
The diagrams make it appear like the tires have significantly different results, but that's because the x-axis of the diagrams doesn't start at 0.
please explain to me how in this test the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P comes so close to Michelin in show handling, but in the non SUV test (Best 11 Winter Tires for 2023/24) it just comes in 8'th
Thank you for all of your hard work.
it's on the list for next year :)
@@tyrereviews thanks for all of your hard work.
When doing the next winter tyre test, could you pls add the pirelli pzero winter?
There is no real review for it and much less a comparison, but even though the modell is a few years old ive never driven a btter feeling winter tyre
Hi there!
How do Michelin Latitde Alpin LA2 compare with these? I found a good deal.. for my Touareg 7P.
Thanks!
What tire size is recommended i’ve been told that even if my car during summer uses 19 inches that I should get 16’s for winter.
Can you make video on best winter tires for electric cars please
The conti from this test is right up there
@@tyrereviews Great video and amazing content! I came across your video looking for the best winter tyres on a Tesla Model X for drives in the Swiss Alps. I had almost decided on the Michelin Pilot Alpine 5 SUV but now confused given the Conti WinterContact TS 8 beating that in the overall verdict.
If my concern is mainly snowy conditions on Alpine routes, which one would you recommend?
Also, do you have a video with views on snow chains?
I watch your last year video with the golf and u didnt recommended the continental winter contact as they were southern europe. This test with suv u recommended as your top pick is there something i missed i know one is heavy and one is light but if there that bad on the golf how did they win this test ...?
please test the aging of tyres sometime soon!
1:02 lol, that synthetic engine/exhaust noise pumped thorough the speakers. The car makers are so silly.
I cannot find the winner on ContinentalTire's website, which shows the 'ContiWinterContact TS830 P', but not the 'WinterContact TS 870 P' as tested. Is this the winner here discontinued? The names are awfully similar, but they are indeed different, and confusing!
Alpine 5 offered a 275/45/20 that I needed
Ive never driven the LM series for Bridgestone. What is their claim to fame over the other Blizzak tires? Im guessing the weird tire sizes these days? Huge rims etc.
