- With the technical support from HECAF and financial support from HSYWE, the Zero Waste project was successfully implemented at Namgyal Higher Secondary School (NHSS). On October 2016, a weeklong waste assessment was conducted to analyze the amount of waste generated per day from the school. On an average, the school generated 84 kg (402 litres) of waste per day. The project duration was of six months from April 2017 till September 2017. The school waste management committee was developed for the continual operation of the zero waste management program. The members of the Namgyal Green Club (NGC) are now leading the waste management program of the school. All the students, teachers and other staff of the school have been oriented on the zero waste management programs.
According to the waste assessment data, the biodegradable waste comprises 65% of the total waste. Therefore, a 10 cubic meter biogas plant has been constructed for management of biodegradable waste. The health care waste generated from school clinic has also been managed where risk and non risk waste is segregated at source and risk waste is autoclaved for safe handling. The drinking water source used in the school has been tested for physical, chemical and biological parameters by HECAF using a portable water testing kit and the result had been handover to the school principal. The environmental benefit from this project during the duration of three months, the school has recycled 1.59 tons of waste saving 39.65 Million BTUs and reducing 1.23 MTCE of green house gas emission excluding the methane gas generated from the bio gas plant.
