Nice build. About the 500 ms ( 2 Hz ) pulse and your 970 RPM ( 0.97 Hz ) seems to be just a bit out of phase. You might be getting situations where the drive pulse is partially slowing the rotation down. I guess this is why hall sensor would be better = at any RPM you are pull/pushing at the "right" moment instead a fixed frequency.
