This is not a "Concerto for group and orchestra", this is a Concerto for DEEP PURPLE and orchestra. No one else can ever play like that, even if they play all the notes exactly. "All tricks were performed by professionals, do not try to repeat them".
This is like the ultimate thing that prob ever happened in Rock History during that time, i mean, Classical Music led by an oustanding Orchestra, Amazing musicianship to the high level of Virtuosity of every single member of this group!! The amazing groove that rock had at that time with that psychedelic touch to it!! I fucking love this album n i still consider it my fav of all time, greatest band of all time!! (R.I.P Jon Lord)
This had a huge influence on me at age 15! First time I saw a successful connection between rock & classical. I think this helped pave the way for the likes of Rick Wakeman ("Journey to the centre of the Earth") and indeed what became known as Progressive Rock in the next decade.
If only Jon Lord composed more, he could have been a wonder in both classical and rock traditions. This is a work of enormous intellectual might, pure genius at its most creative best! At the time it may have been a bit amusing and curious but by far it makes this work a monumental contribution. Jon and Malcolm, hope you are both in Golden Time. Thank you for being daring, innovative, creative and experimental.
I recall reading that Ritchie was given (I think) 24 bars to play a solo, and he went for something like 54 bars, not bothering to count. The orchestra supposedly did not appreciate his antics.
@@Tunkkis I'd guess at that time the orchestra musicians had a rather dim view of rock in general. It is my understanding that the conductor whose name escapes me had a good relationship with Jon Lord and they worked together to put this together. If you watch closely however, the one orchestra musician seems to be getting into it bouncing his leg tapping his foot lol. He obviously appreciated it.
Sincere condolences to John's family. He was a major contemporary artist, a cultural icon, and just a remarkable person. I love that he grew from classical roots and translated that early music into modern forms.
my knowledge of classical music i limited but still, this is 1969. This concert was increible innovative by that time. To sad that the mix between rock and classical music haven't been explored so much since then. It sounds so great!
There is no other band like deep purple, the chemistry and awesomeness of the band members cannot be duplicated. Highly technical musicians. I love it.
Oh Wow!! If ever I needed reminding who are the best band in the world (and I don't need reminding) then listening to this does it. What a monumental effort by band, orchestra, conductor and composer alike. Bless you Mr Lord - my musical hero.
This has to be one of the most successful cross-genre pieces ever. And just goes to show the inventiveness, skill and boldness of great musicianship. Purple are every bit as virtuoso as the orchestra. And it lays testament that rock music can be serious and diverse as classical music.... well almost.... good to see some members of the orchestra tempted to bop!!
I never heard this before, which is strange because I love psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and orchestral music. This is a fantastic fusion of the orchestra and the rock group.
Image any wannabes trying to do this now. ? My hat is doffed to all the musicians present, but speaking as a guitar player, the tone and fluidity coming from Blackmore takes one's breath away. Surely one of the most exciting, edge of your seat pieces of live guitar improvisation ever. But to imagine achieving this in front of a full professional orchestra, in front of a packed audience, in front of cameras and recording engineers, and in the Royal Albert Hall.....????? I hope Hendrix got to hear it.
This is a masterpiece ! I have always loved it when Deep Purple play that kind of Music With orchestra. Jon Lord have also some solo albums in the same ways, and use big orchestra !
Interesting to note that the classic iinstrument players are mostly "over 50" and passed away by now, but we can still enjoy their contribution to the still living (2024) Deep Purple in their infancy! Ritchie Blackmore is a modern day Beethoven, with Jon Lord of Bachian equivalence!!
indeed a maestro you were... thankx for the best music ever and rest in peace my friend!! never to be forgotten !! also thanx for posting this maxxblade ( although that 2 years ago Jon was still with us but anyway thank you again! ) The Secction from Holland....
Brilliant...Just loaded this onto my Ipod, I had the album back in the early 70's and been following Purple ever since. Wonderfule stuff.....Thank you!
Roger Glover playing a real good part there and he was only in the band a few months at this point. Ian as well, they were transitioning into the very popular early 70 s Deep Purple at this point. They also were working on "In Rock" at this point.
A fantastic piece of work that is starting to get the credit it deserves. I loved what purple went on to become, would have loved to hear them like this more often, playing with concentration not getting too wild. Blacmore pulls off an amazing solo ahead of it's time, You gotta have some balls to walk out in front of a world respected orchestra and play so clean/precise and not feel overawed. I can't think of a guitarist who could play that clean with minimum distortion anywhere near as well.
Thanks SO much for sharing this! I own the newer version, but have only been able to get "Bits and Pieces" of the origonal! Jon Lord would be proud! What more can I say? YOU DA MAN !!
I found this LP (import, in US) in 1985 as a teenager. My mother hates modern classical music with too much percussion She's a traditional classical music fan pre-dating the russian composers late 19th century. I was trying to impress her at the time as a fourteen year old kid who just liked good rock music. To her credit, she didn't mock me. As an experiment, it still holds up today.
In the Magic Theater Head shop where my friend Bruce Martin worked. The only reason he worked there was because they had a bitchin' stereo . Big fat Marantz with with Wollensack reel to reel Tape machine.and Voice of the theater Speakers. When the owner put this album on , I thought I would be bored outta my skull. Lo and behold it blew me away. Hooked on Deep Purple ever since.
to anyone who reads this let me advice you to read asimov's works while listening to this, I can't think of one without the other now :D I'm thankful to my shuffling library everytime I pick up a foundation or robot book for letting me discover this wonderful symbiosis

Ludwig van Beethoven f
BLACKMORE IS AMAZING. NEVER SEEN A GUITAR PLAYER LIKE HIM
Damn the critics who have cursed this album . Were the same that hated Zeppelin and Sabbath's first records . Amazing masterpiece!

The same lame ass critics that praise bullshit punk rock

Always loved the way he hammered on his Gibson! This energy helped kicked ass on In Rock !
One of THE great guitar solos by the maestro! Unrehearsed and improvised.
YES!

Jon lord is an excellent composer
Who ever gave this a thumbs down dislike is a idiot . This is a amazing music !!! Deep Purple are music genius!!!

Missing a piece at 2:40...if I remember correctly... The DPs will remain in the history of music... The best ever... My life is Purple 💜 🎶 🔝 🔝 🔝
my knowledge of classical music i limited but still, this is 1969. This concert was increible innovative by that time. To sad that the mix between rock and classical music haven't been explored so much since then. It sounds so great!
It's still the best rockband in the world!

Made history that day...
This performance improves as time goes up. Amazing!

Incredible... 42 years later... I still loving this concert.
I found out about this amazing peice of music a day before Jon Lord died.

DEEP PURPLE LA MEJOR BANDA DE ROCK DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS
Gracias
The biggest and the best!!!
I wonder what the orchestra thought of that collaboration. Some musicians looks really into it; others you can't tell. Marvelous...thanks for posting.
Jon Lord was an Incredible Musician. R.I.P
Interesting to note that the classic iinstrument players are mostly "over 50" and passed away by now, but we can still enjoy their contribution to the still living (2024) Deep Purple in their infancy!

Top notch musicianship, impressive performance. Deep Purple defines classic rock at its best..
Wow man, I remember my dad blasting this out when I was kid on his vinyl. Thanks for putting this up 🙏🏽
Wow... this is the highest video quality I have ever seen for this. Thank-you for posting!
fantastic band in the world

Je to úžasná skladba a Ian Gillan je skvělý
This is perfect ...
Magnifique 🙂 !!!!
muchas gracias por colocar este excelente concierto.
Just watched the dvd then John Lord's commentary. Classic.
!!Lo máximo!! No hay que decir
Thanks so much, maxxblade, for posting the entire Concerto. This is first time I'm listening to the entire performance. A masterpiece . . . .
R.I.P.
Ritchie Guitar God Blackmore
this is way above perfect... this is something words can't describe...
It's just like any proms concert till the band breaks in. And when it does!

Rest In Peace Jon Lord.
Love it!
Rock progresivos clásico genialidades art' ''' musicalmente art'
Merci Jon Lord!
This is great. thank you.
Great conductor
This is spectacular! I'm not sure I realized they had filmed this concert. So wild to see Ritchie playing that Gibson, instead of his yellow Strat...
Roger Glover playing a real good part there and he was only in the band a few months at this point. Ian as well, they were transitioning into the very popular early 70 s Deep Purple at this point. They also were working on "In Rock" at this point.
fantastic bass line
R.I.P. maestro... Your music lives on!
3:25 the groove. Is very incredible!!!
Versace... bellissima
Arnold's music is fantastic. his symphony's must be head.
Roger Glover-Bass/Bajo
Ian Paice-Drums/Bateria
Ian Gillan-Voice/Voz
Jon Lord-Organ/Organo
Ritchie Blackmore-Guitar/Guitarra.
11:08-11:12 the men with the glasses "this long haired gentleman looks silly but he loves classical music i can respect him"
Probably also upset by Ritchie having his shirt open.😁
Hubba hubba.
Recorded on the day that I was born: September 24,1969.

Hey, Sir Malcolm Arnold could groove..who knew!😁👍
Wow! That's great! I didn't know that the whole thing was filmed.
El mejor de todos
Thanks SO much for sharing this! I own the newer version, but have only been able to get "Bits and Pieces" of the origonal! Jon Lord would be proud! What more can I say?
YOU DA MAN !!
:OOO Wow That's what i call "Music"
Thank you, Jon! Rest in Peace!
Zero dislikes - why am I not surprised!
Interesting how DP shoves the orchestra aside in the first movement but achieves a sort of unity in the third movement. Great fun.

Hi from France !
It wasn't so rare in the sixtie's, Blackmore may started playing with a Strato after 'In Rock'.
thanks, jon! still sends chills!
9:24 awesomeness occurs here

Excelente, o vigor do rock.
