Thanks Tim, this is quite a handy little video. I'm currently at the stage where I know most of the keys, but I have been struggling with reading chords from the sheet music. This has helped, but my question is - when there are more than three notes in the chord, do you continue to shift notes between clefs in the same way as you would a triad? Will that still work for chords that have 4 or more notes?
justchillinxo you gotta look at the intervals. Basically, the major triad is created from the 1, 3 and 5 degrees of the major scale. That's the major triad formula. The formula for the minor triad is 1 b3 5. The diminished is 1 b3 b5. And augmented is 1 3 #5. So in the case of a C chord, if you have C E G it's a major triad, if you have C Eb G it's a minor triad, if you have C Eb Gb it's a diminished triad and if you have C E G# it's an augmented triad.
it would be nice if when you explain the chords is to have the camera showing your fingers/hand on the keys rather camera is on you. I just want to give that feedback. Thank you for all you do!

So explain why lowering the ‘E’ in a C major triad (C,E,G) makes it a C minor and what does it have to do with it’s actual ‘A’ minor chord? Not worded very well. But C major already has a minor cord which is ‘A’ Minor, why does lower the ‘E’ in a C major triad make it minor. Confused!
I think you might be confusing the key of C major with a C major chord. The key of C major uses the white keys on the piano (CDEFGAB). The key of A minor also uses these same keys (ABCDEFG). A minor is the relative minor to C major because it uses those same keys. A C major chord is just using three of those keys (CEG). A major chord is the root note, plus four half-steps, plus three half-steps. If instead you lower the middle key by one half step, the pattern is root, plus three half-steps, plus four half-steps. This makes it a 'minor chord' vs a 'major chord'. Not 'A minor' (the key something is played in).

This lesson could be one minute long. Just put root position, 1st inversion, 2nd inversion, and the opened chord on the same staff, side by side, and let us see the difference. 7th chords could have been included so we see it all in one shot. I hate it when teachers do this shit. They stretch it out over 3 weeks, at $50 per lesson, $150.
With RUclips videos, there is no way to know how people will find them or in what order or what level they are at. He's flung the prudent thing by explaining just enough that almost anyone can follow along. Just because you and I are coming in with some amount of prior knowledge doesn't mean everyone is. He's an excellent teacher, in part for that reason. Also, this is a free video... Lol
I am still learning, but my tip is to memorize the notes on the clef first if you haven’t already. And I think you have to understand intervals before you can learn chords.
