Firstly, there are many types of real estate investments such as office, residential commercial, etc. Secondly, each of these types has different stages from development to fully occupied. Thirdly, there are many ways to invest - directly, private real estate funds, REITS, etc.. Finally, and most importantly, it depends on your Investment Policy Statement (IPS - your return/risk objectives based on your liquidity needs, time horizon, tax considerations, legal considerations and unique circumstances) and how the real estate investment fits into your IPS. So, unfortunately, my answer to your question is that it depends. Sorry it's not a better answer! If you have any follow up questions, please don't hesitate to let me know.
